Sleeping With The CEO -
Chapter 305: Neighbor
Chapter 305: Neighbor
When Emily had arrived at the small town of Joy, she had not really expected much to change. But after all of the emotional strain that she had been through. Plus the exhaustion of travel. She had expected to at least get a little bit more sleep than she was used to.
No such luck.
After finally managing to go to sleep, at five o’clock in the morning, by six, Emily was up and about. The memories of her latest nightmare still fresh in her mind. For this particular nightmare, there had been no running.
No enemies chasing her in the dark. She had not been drowning, suffocating or anything else. But even so, she had still been unable to shake the feeling of dread.
Of danger lurking in the shadows. She had been in a glass cage underwater. But there had been enough air in it for her not to start struggling to breathe. But she had not been alone beneath the waters. Her father had been there. Only he had been on the other side of the glass, immersed in the dark waters. He had not said anything. He had just looked at Emily, his palm flat against the glass and no matter how hard she had tried she had been unable to hold his hand.
That dream had been different in the sense that instead of trying to live, to breathe.
Emily had been actively hitting the glass. Kicking at it and even throwing her body against it, in an effort to reach her dad. Wanting to just be held by him one more time. She had been unsuccessful in her attempts, and she had woken up crying, alone in a strange bed.
But now the nightmare was behind Emily and she was getting ready to face the day. It was Tuesday morning. And no doubt the people from the factory workers to those who did other jobs around the town were also getting ready for the day.
Her assumptions on the town’s habits were proven correct. When she finally managed to make it out to the town proper, and was greeted by a place that was literally buzzing with life. The day before most people had already been at work. So she had not seen anyone.
But that morning it seemed as though the whole town had come out in force. Emily was pleasantly surprised by the workers at the factory plant. The night that she and Derek had been there.
Too much had been going on for Emily to memorize every single face. But that did not matter because it seemed that the people had seen her and they had not forgotten. There were friendly waves as she walked past. Some even going as far as to hug her.
Emily did not say much to any of them, just a few quick hellos while making sure to never get too caught up in conversation.
The people of the town were still under the impression that she worked for Haven Group. As a result, some had seemed very interested in trying to ask her about something going on there. Apparently there was some big shake up.
But Emily did not want to hear it, and she was glad that whenever somebody tried to draw her into conversation. They were often long-winded about it, in the way that people in small towns often were when it came to discussing topics.
By the time they finally tried to get around to their main issue. They would have a friend or a workmate pulling them away. Reminding them that they were going to be late. At some point, the number of people trying to stop her to have random conversations out in the street dwindled to nothing.
The factory workers finally having to go into work. No longer being delayed by having to make conversation with strangers. Emily finally found a diner and settled down to have her first meal in a while. It was funny how hunger seemed to take a back seat when one was dealing with heartache. Though she did not have much of an appetite, Emily forced herself to finish the cereal that she had ordered. Once done she made sure to thank the waitress, something that the older woman seemed to appreciate.
"Not many outsiders have manners these days. It is nice to see that some people are different." The woman said,
"You be sure to come round here again, sugar," And Emily nodded before making her way out. Having been a waitress herself, she knew how important a simple thank you could be.
So it had really been the least that she could do. Rather than going back to the motel where it would be just her and her thoughts. Emily instead walked around the town for a bit. There was really nothing much to see.
There was one clinic, one pet store, one bar. What looked to be a movie theater and a few shops. Other than that, the entire place was really not all that interesting. The only thing that caught the eye was the solar panel plant.
But Emily wanted nothing to do with anything Haven Group related, so she steered clear of that. And whenever she happened to walk into an establishment, and found people talking about whatever this mystery thing that was happening at Haven Group was. She instantly walked out. Eventually it became too much, and Emily had to admit defeat and head back to the motel.
Once there she was met by the old man’s dead-eyed stare. When she greeted him she did not expect any reply from him. Which was why she nearly jumped a foot in the air, when she heard that creaking voice of his. "You have a neighbour. They got in a few hours after you," He rasped.
His voice carrying despite the fact that it should have come out as nothing more than a whisper.
His lips had barely moved after all. "Yes?" Emily said, but it came out as more of a question. This was a motel. People were bound to stay there.
So why on earth would it be important that she know that there was someone else in the motel? Once again deciding that it was just the old man being his weird self. Emily simply nodded and made her way upstairs.
The room that she had been told now had an occupant, was silent as she walked past.
But she could see from beneath its door that the lights were on.
Whoever it was that was in there, was probably either asleep or working on something. Deciding that it was none of her business, Emily shrugged and carried on into her own room.
The old man really was a strange one. Why on earth would he decide to tell her that there was someone a room away from her?
