Sleeping With The CEO
Chapter 299: Second Meeting

Chapter 299: Second Meeting

After dropping a bombshell on your mother. Revealing to her that you had been suffering from insomnia since you were twelve.

That it had never been cured. That you had been lying to her the entire time. The proper thing to do would be to stay with her.

To reassure her that it was not her fault.

Letting her know that it was in no way an insinuation that she was a bad mother, for not having noticed something like that. Derek did not know anyone who had gone through a similar situation to his. But he assumed that if there was.

That would be the standard procedure that they would follow, to handle the problem.

But unfortunately for him, things were different.

Derek had never intended to tell his mother about his sleeping problem. Now he had, not because he felt that he was ready. But because his pain had been too great for him to keep holding on to such a toxic secret.

He’d had to let it go, to show his mother just how much she had cost him with her interfering.

Meddling in business that did not need her input. But instead of staying with his mother after such a revelation, Derek was in the shower. Trying to wash off the stench of alcohol that was clinging to him.

If it would not have made him look even worse in front of Emily’s mother. He would have just rushed over to the apartment the moment that he had learned what his mother had done.

But his first impression had been ruined. Emily’s mom thinking he was nothing more than a heartbreaker.

He had to at least try to salvage the second interaction. Plus if he’d shown up in the state that he had been in. Then Emily most likely would not have taken him seriously, thinking that he was drunk out of his mind.

That was what kept Derek calm as he got himself ready.

And by the time he headed back downstairs, car keys in hand. He once again looked like a person in control of his life, instead of someone whose world had been blown to smithereens. "Where are you going?"

His mother’s voice startled him.

He had not noticed her on the couch, fully believing that she had left. Rather than ignore her, Derek turned back to her and gave her a look. He was too tired to be angry with her. But that did not mean that he was no longer disappointed in her.

"I am going to see my Emily," Derek told her.

His mother nodded," I hope it goes well," Then she went back to staring into space, and Derek opened the door and made his way out.

There was nothing quite like rushing over to your ex-girlfriend’s place to tell her that the reason the two of you broke up was a lie. That your mother was the cause of it all. Making his way to Emily’s apartment. Derek felt like a school child, going to explain what had happened his homework. My mother did it.

Sounded like a weak excuse. But it was the truth. So he was going to stick with it.

Hopefully, Emily would be in a listening mood and would not throw him out on sight. He also hoped that this time if he ran into Emily’s mother. The older Molson woman, would be in a better mood and would be willing to listen to Derek. Or to at least allow him a chance to talk to her daughter. The first time that Derek had met Mrs Molson, he had not made a good impression. That weighed heavily on Derek.

As he wove through traffic, making his way to the apartment building. He wondered if he should stop, buy a gift basket or maybe bring a bouquet of flowers.

Flowers always went down well, unless of course Mrs Molson was allergic. Derek had never really asked Emily about it.

And now that felt like a huge oversight. Why had the two of them never discussed their mothers in detail? He knew that Mrs Molson was somebody that Emily valued greatly. Just as Derek himself valued his own mother, even if he was still angry at her. He loved her.

So if he was to stand a chance with Emily, he had to be on good terms with her mother. But how? The woman had not hidden her dislike for Derek one bit the last time that they had met. Deciding to leave all manner of gifts behind.

Derek chose instead, to just go as himself. The last time he had knocked as Derek Haven, and he had been rejected very thouroughly.

This time he would try the same as well, and hope that tempers had cooled enough for him to be allowed in to at least plead his case.

That was all that Derek was thinking of when he finally arrived at the apartment building.

He held on to that hope as he rode the elevator up, and as he walked through the hallways until he came to the door that he was looking for.

Taking one steadying breath, Derek raised his hand and knocked.

"Coming!" A voice from within said.

It most definitely did not belong to Derek’s Emily. A few seconds later, he was proven correct in that because the door opened, and Emily’s mother peeked out, her eyes widening when she caught sight of Derek.

"Oh, it’s you," She said, sounding a bit disappointed.

But at the same time, she was not looking at Derek as though she wanted to incinerate him with a look. So already, they were making progress from their last encounter. "Is Emily in? I would like to speak with her, please, Mrs Molson, just for a little while," As soon as Derek finished the sentence, he wanted to kick himself.

In his eagerness to see Emily, and tell her the truth. He had forgotten something so simple as offering a greeting.

"...Hello," He said belatedly, scratching the back of his head, feeling his cheeks heat in embarrassment. It would have been better to just stay quiet.

Something in Mrs Molson’s face softened however, and she opened the door further. Stepping back to allow him in. Derek could not help his startled breath. What?! She was letting him come in. Shocked but not wanting to be rude, Derek nodded and stepped into the apartment.

Instantly feeling his shoulders relax as he walked into the tiny space. It was warm. Like any other living area it had a couch, there was a carpet, a tv. All of the other stuff that was to be expected. But there were bits of personality too.

Derek could see a few embroidered pieces decorating the place, pieces that he knew Emily had to have made herself by hand. There were also pictures. The majority were those of Emily and her mom. But there were also pictures when there were three people instead of two. A man who was very clearly Emily’s dad, posing with a younger version of Emily and her mom. The space did not have the obvious touch of a professional interior designer. It was clear to see that the Molson’s had decorated it themselves, but Derek liked it.

It was warm...welcoming.

It reminded him a lot of Emily. And as Emily’s mom ushered him in and led him to the couch, Derek realized that she too was warm and welcoming.Even if in their first encounter she had been anything but. But this current meeting was going very different.

Not only did she allow Derek to come in. She also offered him some juice. Derek gladly accepting the glass, and taking a sip before deciding to get down to business.

"Mrs Molson, I wish to see your daughter. I take it that you know about the two of us breaking up, but I have information for her that will clear everything up," Derek said. Emily’s mother looked at him for a long while, her gaze so intense that it almost felt as though she was looking into his soul.

"Did you intentionally break her heart?" She finally asked and Derek shook his head.

"No, I would never do that to her. It is why I am here. I want us to fix things. I know what happened. And I think that if Emily knew too, things between us would go back to the way they were," Mrs Molson nodded, and then she gave Derek a sad look.

"Whatever it is that you wish to tell my daughter. I am certain that it is important. But unfortunately you’ve come too late. Emily is not here," She said.

Derek’s heart sank but he quickly rallied.

"When will she be back?" He asked. Mrs Molson looked at him like he was a pitiful mutt abandoned on the side of the road.

"That is the thing I do not know. She said she was going to spend the night at a hotel. Then go from there. I have no idea when, she will be back," And once again Derek felt his world fall apart.
