Chapter 234: Be My Girl?

Chapter 234: Be My Girl?

After preventing Emily from saying what she had been about to say after their kiss. Derek had begun to doubt himself. A fact not helped by him not getting any clear signals from Emily.

Had she really been about to say that she was sorry? Did she regret the kiss? Had she enjoyed it? Did she never want it to happen again, or was she open to the possibility of them being something more?

Those were the questions that plagued Derek throughout the days it took to reach Thursday. But try as he might, no matter how many times he stared at her trying to read her mind. Derek could not come up with an answer.

In fact she was playing her cards so close to her chest that by the time Thursday rolled around. Derek had even been unsure as to whether she would come. He had been seriously worried that he would be spending Thursday night alone. Just wasting time staring up at the night sky. His eyes heavy but unwilling to close.

But a few minutes before nine, there had come a knock at the door and Derek had rushed to open it. His heart fluttering when he found Emily waiting on the other side. Her usual bag slung over her shoulder.

He had not wasted any time letting her in, the two of them walking deeper into the penthouse. Not even bothering with pleasantries.

The moment that he had met her gaze at the door. He had known that that Thursday would be different. The two of them had a tendency to dance around issues. Derek knew that. In any other field, in any other situation, they faced things head on. In fact, Derek had been known to go seeking a fight. All in an effort to make sure that it did not catch him unawares.

But when it came to Emily, he often found himself running away from any possibility of confrontation. But that Thursday, just one look into Emily’s brown eyes and Derek just knew that they were going to face things without backing down.

Like it or not, they were going to talk.

It was there in the stubborn set of her jaw, and it was there in the way that she held herself. Her back straight, her shoulders open.

A bit of staff sergeant Molson peeking through.

There was no small talk made as Emily walked deeper into the penthouse. And still nothing was said when she took a seat, placing her bag next to her.

Staring at the bag. Derek took it as a good sign. If she had brought her bag with a change of clothes in it. It meant that she was at least considering spending the night with him again. But Derek did not let himself get too excited on that prospect.

Just as she had used the bag to carry her things into the penthouse. She could also still use it to carry things out of the penthouse.

So he dared not breathe a sigh of relief until he heard what she had to say. Derek went to take his seat. He did not sit next to her. Instead, he went to the furthest edge of the couch.

"I take it you have something to say," Derek said, deciding that it was best to just get the ball rolling.

Emily brought her hands together on her lap. She twiddled her thumbs and Derek’s brow furrowed.

Was she nervous? What reason did she have to be nervous?

Releasing a long exhale, Emily turned to him.

"I am sorry," She said and Derek could not help but frown.

He had just been guessing when he had thought that she might have been trying to apologize earlier on.

But now that he had an actual apology from her. It left him feeling even more confused.

What did she mean she was sorry? What exactly was she sorry for? Was she sorry for the first kiss? Or was she sorry that it had led to them making out passionately. Did she regret what had transpired after she had initiated the first meeting of lips?

He needed clarification.

In the next moment, Emily answered his question for him without Derek even having to voice it.

"I am sorry that I kissed you without your permission. It was out of line. And I swear to you, if you forgive me this one transgression, it will not happen again," She sounded so nervous. Did she really think that he was upset that they had kissed.

"I do not know what came over me. Trust me on this. I am not making excuses, Derek. It will never happen again. Just please, please do not end our arrangement simply because I had a lapse in judgement. I will not kiss you again. Just don’t end what we have," The agony in her voice was too much for Derek to take.

He found himself moving from his end of the couch, until he was right next to her. His hand over hers, his thumb running soothing circles over her laced fingers.

"Hey now, none of that," He told her, his voice soothing. With his other hand Derek wiped at a straight tear that had slowly been making its way down her cheek.

"There is no need to cry," He told her.

Emily nodded, taking a shuddering breath, she looked at him, her eyes full of hope.

"Does that mean you forgive me?"

Derek actually paused at that one. The correct answer would be, yes, I forgive you. But he could not bring himself to say the words. Derek shook his head.

"I do not accept your apology," Tears gathered in her eyes, her lower lip trembling.

"Derek, please...please forgive me. I swear to you it won’t happen again. I-"Derek brought his hand up. His index finger going over her soft lips, silencing her.

"I can’t accept your apology because there is nothing to apologise for," Her eyes widened at that. Clearly she wanted to speak, but Derek’s finger against her mouth stopped her.

Taking a deep breath, Derek spoke.

"I cannot accept your apology for the kiss, because I do not regret it," There, he’d said it.

Derek paused. He let his hand fall, and Emily licked her lips. Her eyes once again hopeful.

"You are not upset with me?We can continue sleeping together?" She asked, sounding like she could not bring herself to believe it.

A fire ignited in Derek. Sure, she had been the one to press her lips against his first. But, after he had gotten over his initial shock, Derek had been very into it.

"I am not upset with you. In fact I am the exact opposite of that," Overcome by a need that he could not control. Derek moved further into Emily’s personal space.

Leaning in, he pressed his lips against hers. The contact brief, but it still left Derek feeling like he was alight.

Leaning back, Derek looked Emily in the eyes, finding her frozen in shock. At first, he did not know what to say. But when the words clicked, Derek had no choice but to let them out.

"Emily, I like waking up in the mornings with you by my side,"

"I like it when we cook together, and when we cuddle. I like all the things we do together, even work. I have even liked the few kisses that we have shared,"

Emily gasped, her soft brown eyes widening some more.

"Do you mean?" She asked, her voice barely a whisper, like she could not believe it. Derek stole another brief kiss before looking Emily in the eye again, smiling at her.

"Emily Molson, will you be my girlfriend?"
