Sleeping With The CEO -
Chapter 224: Why So Logical
Chapter 224: Why So Logical
After his uncle had left the store. Derek had taken it as a win. In a way it truly was a victory. Afterall, if his uncle had found out about Derek and Emily. Things would have gotten messy with a speed that even the world’s fastest jets could only dream of.
Such a scenario was terrifying to think about.
So Derek was glad that it had not become reality. But just because it had not come to be. That did not mean that it had not cost Derek anything.
It had cost him a great deal.
First it had taken his sleep for the week. And now it was about to take yet another week of sleep. Which meant yet another week where he would not be holding Emily in his arms.
"Are you sure?" Derek asked. Standing on the other side of Derek’s desk, Emily nodded. "Yes, I have been giving it some serious thought. And I think that this is the best way," She looked as tired as Derek felt, the bags under both their eyes were a perfect match. So he knew that her proposal was not one made out of selfishness. In fact, it was selflessness. She was choosing caution over her own comfort.
"We have to not see each other for at least another week. If we rush into things, we are likely to make a mistake and get caught," It looked like just saying the words hurt, but Emily took a breath and continued.
"Last time, we evaded your uncle simply thanks to a stroke of luck. If you had not run out of milk. If I had not chosen to go into that particular store. If I had not looked up at the particular moment when your uncle happened to be in my line of sight, then you and I were done. We cannot keep relying on luck to keep us going," Derek nodded at the last part. Truer words had never been said.
"We have to be cautious too. I know that we were being cautious this entire time. But after such a close call, I do not feel comfortable. Just heading over to the penthouse again. Let’s just wait another week and see how it goes,"
Derek rolled the pen that he was holding in between his hands, his brow furrowed.
But he was not thinking about Emily’s proposal. He was thinking about how the previous week had been. Truth be told, Derek had been scared. His uncle had left the store without much trouble.
Anyone else would have taken it to mean that the man had been fooled. That he fully believed that there was no one in Derek’s life. But Derek had been amongst cutthroat people his entire life.
For all that he had known his uncle could have been faking.
Pretending like he had not caught on to anything suspicious. And then the moment that Derek dared to relax, to expose his belly. That would be when his uncle would strike and gut him. So Emily’s worries were not something to be taken lightly. No matter how much Derek wanted to resist.
To tell her that they could still just sleep, that things would be alright. Putting the pen down, Derek brought his fingers to his face and rubbed the bridge of his nose. Then he looked up at Emily. "You are right. Extending our sleep-free nights makes sense. It is a pain right now. I will not lie. I want nothing more than to sleep. But the two of us cannot do that." Emily nodded, giving him a sad look.
"It is not just the fear of us getting caught. I think that this whole thing has affected the both of us. I do not believe that our sleep would be restful with us being stressed about getting caught. We can use the time apart to pull our selves together," Once again, Derek agreed with her. Sometimes being calm and rational was hard.
Both he and Emily were level-headed people. A fact that Derek had never hated more than he did in that moment.
At least one or both of them should have been raging. Angry at the very sky itself about the way that things were going. What was so wrong with the two of them wanting to sleep?! Why did they have to contend with Derek’s uncle being nosy and up to no good at the same time?
Was it not enough that they had suffered for years barely getting any rest? It was not fun and it was most definitely not fair. But both he and Emily had already accepted that.
But still, even though Derek had accepted it.
That did not mean that he did not want to take back his acceptance. To beg Emily to just come any way.
’Your embroidery misses you. The bed misses you...I miss you. He wanted to say, but he kept quiet. In addition to Emily’s coat, Derek had taken to picking up the embroidery piece that Emily was working on whenever he felt particularly lonely. Running his hands over it was almost as soothing as feeling the softness of the coat against his skin.
Clenching his hands into fists, Derek forced himself to focus on Emily. He had to send her away, otherwise he would find himself on his knees. Begging her to come back to the penthouse with him after work and sleep. Derek searched for something to send her out.
"Now that we have settled that matter. Did you finish typing that list of all of the abandoned buildings that Haven group plans to acquire in the next year?" He asked.
Derek knew very well that she had not. When he had passed through her office and called her into his under the guise of discussing work. He had taken a glimpse at her laptop and he had seen that she had it open but the page was not even half way done. "No, I have not," Emily said, latching on to the conversation change like she too had been looking for a way to leave the room. I was just beginning it when you called me into your office. I will head out there right now and finish it.
And with that, she left.
The moment the door closed behind her, Derek’s head hit the desk.
He was so tired.
If it would not have been breaking all sorts of company rules. Derek would have followed Emily over to her own office and then he would have crawled under her desk, and fallen asleep, cuddling her ankles. That was how tired he was. That was how much he needed sleep. But he had to go on without rest for another week, two weeks of no sleep.
He really hoped that come the third week, there would be no more need for them to keep their distance from each other. They both needed to sleep.
