Chapter 218: Cat And Mouse

Sebastian Haven! Sebastian Haven!

Sebastian Haven!...

Unable to scream since that would give away her location. Emily had mentally screeched the name for a good few seconds.

Somewhere in between all of that internal screaming she had managed to fire off a few texts to Derek. But after that inspired act. Emily’s brain had decided that, it was the perfect time to go on vacation.

Had it not been for Derek texting back and asking her about soy milk of all things, Emily was certain that she would have gone down quickly. Her mind grasping at random thoughts in an effort to try and get her to think of anything but

the situation that she was in at the moment.

But Derek’s soy milk trick had worked and she had found herself being too angry, to be panicked. The man had also gone on to call her a staff sergeant, something that she had not expected. And that title, had instantly grabbed Emily’s attention.

It was not the first time that Emily had heard him use the word. Had he been talking about her too that last time when she had asked if he knew a staff sergeant and he’d said ...in a way...

The nerve of that man! Clinging to that anger.

Emily used it, channelling it into something that could be useful in getting her out of Sebastian’s clutches, and that was exactly what the situation was, his clutches.

Emily felt like a mouse trapped in a maze. Wherever she moved. It seemed as though the man could feel her presence, and he instantly showed up. She had moved from the milk aisle and over to the seafood.

And there he was. Then when she had run from the seafood, and headed for the fruit section. Sebastian had shown up, standing right next to the avocados, while Emily had hidden behind a giant grapefruit. She’d had to pretend to be unhealthily interested in some kale chips when he had passed right behind her at another aisle.

As she had been playing hide-and-seek throughout the store without Sebastian Haven realizing that they were playing hide-and-seek, an idea had come to Emily. The man had proven time and time again that he saw her as being worth less than the dirt on his shoes. With him seeing her like that, Emily was sure of one thing. She knew Sebastian Haven. She had worked with the man’s nephew too long and had had way too many encounters with Sebastian to have not picked up a few things about his character.

And as Emily continued to run through the store trying to avoid him. She went through the things that she knew about him in her mind.

Number one, Sebastian Haven was a very jealous man who believed that in not being handed the company by his late father. He had been cheated, and since then he had been doing everything in his power to try and get his hands on the position of CEO of Haven Group.

Number two, the man loved to party. As old as he was, his age mates had retired, or were living in retirement homes but Sebastian was still going at it. Partying like he was eighteen years old, and did not show any signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Number three, Sebastian Haven loved women and booze. The women more so than the booze.

Number three was pretty much common knowledge. Everybody knew that. In fact, it was so well known that the tabloids had even stopped taking pictures of Sebastian with various ladies, who were way too young for him, hanging off his arm. It was just the norm now.

But there was one more thing that Emily knew about Sebastian Haven.

Number four was something that was not common knowledge. As much as Sebastian loved women. He also hated them with a passion. As far as he was concerned, women were for having sex with and then for popping out babies( preferably babies that were not his). They would be much happier stuck at home, with no prospects in life, just waiting on him hand and foot.

And as a result, whenever Sebastian met a woman who did not conform to those ideals of his in one way or the other. He went out of his way to make sure they knew that they were nothing. That to him, they were insignificant. Even going as far as to forget their name, not just pretending to forget.

But actually not knowing, despite multiple reintroductions. Emily knew this from experience.

Pausing on point number four. Emily realized that she had the solution to her problem right there. Sebastian did not know her name. Most likely, when she was out of the office and was not standing next to Derek. There was a huge likelihood that he also did not know what she looked like. Being that she was in the last aisle of the store, staring down at rows of cereal. Emily took a chance.

Focusing on point number four seemed to be her most likely bet. Leaning on the fact that there was a high chance that Sebastian would not recognize her out of her work attire, was the best shot she had. And so, taking a deep breath, Emily reached for her hair.

She had left it in the ponytail that she’d had at work. But now, desperate times called for desperate measures. Reaching up, she grabbed the band that she had been using to hold it in place and pulled. Her hair instantly came down around her shoulders, framing her face.

Staring at the reflective surface of one of the shelves. Emily did her best to style her hair. She dragged a few locks over one eye, making it seem like just a casual hairstyle.

But in truth she was trying to conceal as much of herself as possible. That done, she grabbed a cart and put in a few items into it. Then she hunched over a bit.

Adopting the pose of many overworked parents who were doing shopping after a hard day at work.

Then it was show time, not because she was ready, but because Sebastian was only a few feet from her

Pushing the cart, Emily kept her head tilted down slightly. She made sure that ths angle looked as natural as possible. Not enough to rouse suspicion, but enough to hide her face a bit. Making sure that in addition to the hair, Sebastian would have to bend his neck if he were interested in looking at her.

He carried on walking towards her, oblivious. Emily walked towards him too, so scared she was gripping the cart as hard as she could.

Right after they had crossed paths, Emily’s phone rang. She looked at the caller ID. It was Derek. She picked up on the second ring.

"Is he still there?" Derek asked.

"Yes," Emily answered, going still when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"Excuse me," Sebastian Haven’s smooth voice came, and Emily felt her whole body go tense.

Oh no, oh no, oh no.

Was this it? Was this how things were going to end for her and Derek?
