Chapter 172: Mama Comes Calling

After telling yet another lie about going to do something work related. Emily had made her way out of the apartment on Friday night and had gone over to Derek’s place. Rather than eating that night, both of them had already had something before meeting up. So they had simply passed an hour just watching random TV. And then with a not so subtle yawn, Emily had signalled that she was ready to go to bed. Derek had jumped at the chance so fast, Emily would have laughed if she too were not so desperate to get some shut eye. They had gone to bed with what felt like mountains of space between them, but somehow, just like on Wednesday night. They had moved closer in their sleep. And as Emily woke up early Saturday morning, she realized that she was once again in Derek’s arms. Frowning Emily curled her toes a bit. What had woken her up? One moment she had been dreaming about riding this huge water horse and now she was suddenly aware. Letting out a muffled groan of complaint. She tried to find the calmness that usually dragged her under, but she could not. Something was stopping her.

There was a low rumble coming from her side that just would not let up, and it was disturbing Emily.

She tried to look for the source of the disturbance, but all that did was hit her full on with the bright light of day. She instantly forced her eyes to close once again, trying to block it out. Only when she was sure that the light would not hurt her anymore, did Emily cautiously open her eyes again.

This time she was able to look around and when she moved her head to the side she finally found exactly what it was that had woken her from her wonderful slumber. It was none other than Derek Haven himself. His hair was an absolute mess.

That beard of his clearly did not know how to stay still while sleep. It looked as though it was about to eat his face. But that was not at all what Emily was focused on. Emily’s main focus was on glaring at Derek’s mouth. The mouth that was responsible for waking her. But Derek was unbothered. He was talking on the phone, running a hand through his hair. Emily made a disgruntled noise and opened her mouth on instinct, about to ask. But Derek, finally noticing that she was awake, shook his head vehemently. Then he put a finger over his mouth. The universal sign for silence.

The move was so abrupt that Emily froze and then she remembered herself. Oh, what they were doing was a secret. No one was supposed to know that they were together at any point in time. She nodded to let him know that she had understood, and he nodded back, before returning to his conversation. "Mother, you know I cannot do that," Oh, he was talking to his mother. Emily often heard her speak of the woman. He always sounded fond when he did, but she had never actually heard him speaking to her.

"Mother, as I said before. There is no need for you to be so dramatic and fake being ill. I will be sure to come by the manor to see you. I am certain that whatever it is that has you calling me at this hour must be very important. So I will not waste time," Having given up on sleep, Emily had been about to just relax and let her mind wander.

But just before she could do that, her own phone began to vibrate and she pushed herself up. Looking over at the caller ID, she realized that it was her mom who was calling. What was this? The attack of the moms?

Looking over, she found Derek looking at her, and she shrugged. "Mom," she mouthed, and he nodded in an understanding way. Moving as quickly as she could, Emily grabbed the phone and then made her way to the bathroom, once seated on what was probably the most expensive toilet that she had ever sat on. Emily answered.

"Hi, Mom,"

"Oh, hey Ems. I’m just calling to see how the night was. Everything is alright with you? Right?" "Yes Mom. Everything is fine," Emily said.

"Are you sure that nothing untoward happened. That all is fine and dandy?" Her mom asked. And then she laughed. She spent a whole five seconds just giggling like a school girl. And Emily paused. She took the phone away from her ear, put it up to her face and stared at it.

Yep.

The call ID still said, Mom. Her mother had not been replaced by a teenager. Putting the phone back against her ear, she resumed the conversation cautiously. "Mom, are you all right?" Her mom giggled some more. "Of course, darling, I am absolutely fine,"

"What makes you think I’m not all right?" She asked. Then she proceeded to start giggling again. Oh, something was definitely wrong. Standing up, Emily continued to speak as she made her way to the door.

"I’m coming home soon, okay? In fact, I’m on my way right now," She said, and disconnected the call. Whatever it is that was up with her mom, Emily needed to be there in person to see it. Because clearly she would not be getting answers over the phone.

She opened the door to find Derek still on the phone with his mother. "Yes, mother, brunch is doable," He had the look of a man being nagged, and Emily could not help but feel sorry for him.

Waving at him to catch his attention, Emily pointed at her overnight bag and then at the door, indicating that she was about to go. He looked sad, no doubt he had wished that they could talk first. Emily had too, but duty called. They both had obligations towards their parents.

Clearly Derek had brunch with his mother, and Emily had to go home to make sure that her mom had not accidentally swallowed some edibles.

Packing up, Emily was at the door in record time. When she finally made it home, it was to find her mom in the living room watching TV. When her mom saw her, she stood up and came over for a hug. Emily returned it, and when the two of them parted, her mum seemed to be taking her in with extra interest.

"Come on mom, I was only gone for a few hours. Why are you pretending like I have been gone for years?" She asked, and her mom laughed.

"What?! Can’t a mom miss her own daughter? Besides, I was just worried. How was your night with your man?" The last part was thrown in so subtly that Emily almost missed it. But when the words registered, she was thrown for a loop. What?

"Mom, I told you that I was only at work. Work, no men in sight?" She denied. But all her mom did was laugh again.

"Well, for somebody who was not going to see a man, you sure do seem to be glowing. Whatever it is that they have you working on, it must be very satisfying," Her mom laughed at that. Then she went back to watching whatever it was that she had been looking at when Emily had walked in.

Deciding that the more she denied, the more her mum would think there was something going on, Emily made her way to her room without another word.

It had only been two days and her mum already had suspicions. Emily had to think of something to throw her off her scent.
