Chapter 158: Rules And Regulations

Chapter 158: Rules And Regulations

While standing at the back of the conference room and watching Sebastian Haven pretend to be a decent human being. All sad eyes and shy smiles as he won over the crowd of reporters. Emily had wanted to throw up on more than one occasion. They were literally in a room full of people whose job it was to spot a liar and be able to dig up the truth. But somehow they were all trapped under Sebastian Haven’s spell.

There really was no justice in the world. And just knowing that she was partly responsible for this, since it had been her idea. For him to share the photos that he had watched up, Emily felt even worse.

Sure, it meant that she had saved the company a lot of money and averted the possibility of people having to face wage cuts or retrenchment because of Sebastian Haven, but it still only took off a small bit of her guilt. Were it up to her, both Sebastian and his lady of the night would have been hung out to dry, dealing with each other. Clearly they were the type of people who deserved one another. If Haven had not been involved, Emily would have let it play out, and looking at Derek and catching the slight look of disgust on his face.

She realized that he would have done the same too, which was why she had whispered some less than professional things about his uncle to him. When he had finally had enough and left, Emily had followed him quietly.

Glad to no longer be trapped in a room full of liars and idiots. But as they had made their way back to Derek’s office, a thought which had been floating around in Emily’s head ever since the beginning of Sebastian’s latest debacle had come back to the surface, and she had been unable to push it down. And so at the earliest chance she got, she had made Derek aware of it.

"We need to talk," She said, and she saw him tense.

Realizing how it must have sounded, Emily rushed to reassure him. "No, not like that. Do not worry. The sleep thing is still on. At least I hope it is. You haven’t changed your mind, have you?" He shook his head and she sighed in relief.

"Good, good. Because I have not changed my mind as well,"

She laced her fingers together, taking a deep breath, and then she carried on where she had left off. "But I have been thinking..." His green eyes narrowed slightly, his head tilted to the side, a sign that he was paying attention. "About..." He prompted, and Emily bit her bottom lip before continuing.

"This whole thing with your uncle and that girl has made me realize something. Both of them were out to have a good time, but their definition of a good time was clearly vastly different from one another’s. Your uncle clearly thought that it would be a night out, some heavy drinking, some sex, and then the two of them would be done with each other, while she on the other hand had budgeted for a night out, some sex, and then dragging him through the mud as she took him for all that he was worth,"

He nodded, his hand coming up to rest on the table, his fingers tapping a random tune on the surface.

"That is true. And to be honest, I am shocked that it has taken so long for something like this to happen. With the type of lifestyle my uncle leads. I would have expected Haven Group to be fielding situations like this on the regular. But my uncle has always been unbelievably lucky when it comes to his shenanigans," Derek said.

"But is this leading anywhere?" He asked. And Emily nodded once more. "Actually, it is," She told him.

"You are not your uncle and I am not, nor will I ever be the type of person that that woman is. But the situation got me thinking..."

She leaned forward, looking him straight in the eye to let him know that she was serious.

"You and I cannot just go into this blindly without any preparation, any protection whatsoever," He took a startled breath at that. "Protection!" He whisper-shouted.

And Emily had to suppress her laugh.

"Not like that Derek. We will be sleeping together. Not sleeping together," She told him. A smile stretching her face. In the next moment she forced it away. "I mean protection as in, I think it would be best if the two of us came up with a set of rules. You write down things that you expect from this, things that you want, and I, on my end will do the same,"

"It should be something easy, something that you can come up with in a few hours, because even though I want the rules to be there, I am not willing to go through yet another sleepless night. So how about this? I head home after this and you go home and we spend some time drafting our lists,"

"And then once that is done and we are satisfied with them, when I come by your place later tonight, we each take out our lists, have a look. And if we have any expectations of one another that we are not comfortable with, we negotiate. Scratch them out, and keep going until we come up with something that both of us are comfortable with," Emily looked at him.

It was a reasonable request, a form of protection for both of them so that whatever happened in the future, they would both have clear boundaries of what was allowed and what was not.

He had no reason to refuse it, and even though she had just assumed that the venue would be his place, she was glad he had not objected to that. He also seemed to like her suggestion of having rules. It was a simple requirement after all. And sure enough, a few seconds later, Derek nodded, "You are right. It is a good idea to have rules. And you coming by my place is best. It does not get any more private than that,". He pulled his hand back off the table. The tapping sound that he had been making instantly cutting off.

"You go home, get ready, prepare your list and come by the penthouse, tonight. I will send you the directions to get there." He told her, reaching for his phone. He tapped on it for a bit and Emily felt her own vibrating in her pocket.

She took it out, and there were clear instructions on how to get to Derek’s home. It showed a lot of trust, that he was willing to share such information with her and Emily made a promise to herself that she would not give him reason to regret it.

"Good. I will be seeing you tonight then with my list in hand," She told him, and with that she made her way out of his office and settled behind her own desk. She would have loved to say that she was professional enough to be able to get back to work after that, but that would have been a lie. Instead, for the rest of the day, all Emily did was type away at her computer .

But she was not doing anything work related. Instead she was trying and failing to come up with a list of things.

In the end, Emily ended up just staring at her PC, too nervous to come up with anything.
