Chapter 151: Nasty Things Come Back
If people were to be asked, not that Sebastian cared about their opinion. But if they were to be asked whether or not they thought him to be a patient man, the majority would say no. And he was fine with that. For the most part, he was not patient. After all, he was a Haven.
When he wanted something, it was within his right to have it, and have it at the very moment he even began thinking about it. That was what being a haven meant. Money, power, and having all of your whims catered to at the drop of a hat. But in truth, Sebastian could be patient when he wanted to. And the situation that he was currently in was one that was showing his patience. His last attempt to rile up his nephew had not gone as planned. And had the failure of that scheme made Sebastian mad?
Yes.
It had made him mad, he would admit to that. But after the wave of rage had passed, he had decided to wait. After all, there was a possibility that his nephew had been lying to him when he had said that things were on the up and up, between him and his PA. And the only thing that could prove his nephew a liar, Sebastian had decided in that moment would be time. If the end of the two-week extension came and went without his PA showing up. Then Sebastian would definitely know that where there was smoke, there was fire.
Then he would use the situation to his advantage. So rather than act, he had stayed quiet, patiently watching as his nephew mistreated other people’s personal assistants, something that even Sebastian knew was a huge mistake. He had seen the way that the other heads of department’s eyes narrowed each time his nephew berated the underlings, and it had been all that he could do to keep from smiling outright. He had not wanted to give his nephew a heads up, so instead he had smiled on the inside.
His plan had been simple. He would wait until the Monday that the PA was supposed to come back. And when she did not, he would start sowing the seeds of doubt. "Look at your leader. Did he not say that his personal assistant was coming back?"
"How can we trust someone who is always making excuses like that?"
"How can we be certain that the girl still works here? If she quit and he lied about it, do you really want somebody with a moral character so lacking, to be in charge, to be your boss? If he is willing to lie about this, imagine what else he is willing to be untruthful about,"
Those were the tidbits of information that Sebastian had been planning to start dropping, subtly shifting support away from Derek, not outright coming out and saying that he was a better candidate, but letting the people come up with their own conclusions.
Human beings were fickle like that. He was certain that if he kept applying pressure, dropping a few hints here and there, he would be able to get more than a few on his side. Plus, his nephew’s temper suddenly turning into that of a porcupine would be very helpful, in helping him pull more people over to his cause.
But all of that had hinged on the PA not coming back, as his nephew had said she would. So Sebastian had waited for Monday with bated breath.
And now it was Monday and he was doing something that he had never done before in all of his decades at the company. Sebastian was at work early. Rather than going straight to his office and opening up some wine or maybe even dipping into the whiskey early. He had stayed by the ground floor chatting up the receptionist, while keeping an eye on the door to see if Derek’s little bloodhound would show up. If the official work hours came and went without her showing her face, then Sebastian would know for sure that something was up, and he would immediately go on the offensive. His nephew would never know what had hit him.
Five minutes until the beginning of the workday, Sebastian was vibrating in place. He’d heard from Lucas that the woman liked being at least 30 minutes to an hour early. For her to reach these times without her showing up, that meant that there was a huge chance that she would never show at all.
Well, well, well, it seemed that there was truth to the rumors that his nephew had been so quick to dismiss after all. Sebastian would have a great time ripping into his liar of a nephew. Three minutes to go and he was no longer chatting with the receptionist, his focus was now fully on the front doors of Haven Group, the young woman at least, was smart enough to know that the conversation was over and she had stopped talking, her nasally voice no longer distracting Sebastian from his mission.
Three minutes left.
Still nothing, just a harried group of people who paled at the sight of him and then ran for the elevators, all of them filing in once the elevator arrived. He watched the elevator ascend, the see-through walls allowing him to watch as the people inside did everything but look in his direction. When he was in charge, those were the types of people he would be getting rid of first. They were not late for work, so why were they panicking? With a scoff, Sebastian turned back to the front doors, not really expecting any difference. And he nearly bit his tongue when 30 seconds before it was time up, the doors burst open and in walked a nightmare. She wore a black coat that made it all the way to just beneath her knees.
On her feet there was a pair flat shoes at odds with all the stilettos that populated Haven Group headquarters. Her hair held up in a severe bun. She looked more like she belonged in a school somewhere rather than at an office. But Derek’s little creature walked in like she owned the place, and Sebastian’s hopeful mood was dashed.
Suppressing a snarl, he turned back to the receptionist. It would do him no good to continue staring at such ugliness. When he had deemed to express interest in the girl, she had turned him down. And the longer that Sebastian had known her, the more he had realized that he had dodged a bullet. She was probably cold in bed.
Just like the majority of her gender. It was only that Sebastian had needs and they were available. Women, what nonsense. He waited until she was gone. And then he turned around and got into the elevator himself, not even bothering to say goodbye to the receptionist.
He had already forgotten her name. It was truly a great loss to have a creature that had such bad fashion sense, and also as dumb as a brick be back at Haven Group. But that was the sort of company his nephew kept.
Consoling himself with that, Sebastian returned to his office and opened a bottle of wine, taking a swig without bothering with a glass. Great, just great.
An awful start, to what would no doubt be a horrid day.
The witch was back.
