Chapter 122: Almost, But Not Quite
Chapter 122: Almost, But Not Quite
It was so very difficult to get good help these days. Which made it impossible to find a good spy. When the first one had failed him, Sebastian had almost given up. But he had not, instead he had chosen to be patient, and go for a spy that would not be so obvious. It was a pity that that had failed too. But the mousy woman’s useless observations, her name already forgotten, had been enough for Sebastian to start thinking that there was something else going on.
Which was why he had decided to confront his nephew now instead of staying away like he had done all of this time. There had to be something, something that he was missing. Something that could be used as an advantage so that he could dethrone his nephew.
So there he was, currently in his nephews office, watching as the brat who had not earned his position sat in a chair that did not belong to him.
Had he less control of himself, Sebastian would have jumped over the table, and beaten his nephew to a pulp. But he was in control of his rage. In fact, the only time his temper had ever threatened to slip, had been when his nephew had embarrassed him all those weeks ago.
But he was a fully grown adult, capable of controlling himself. So he had not burned the place to the ground like he had wanted to. Instead Sebastian had lost himself in an endless stream of women. Blonds, brunettes, blue hair, red hair, green hair, no hair, short hair, long hair. That did not matter to him, so long as they had breasts bigger than volleyballs, and thick hips, he did not discriminate. He had buried himself in them, and used their bodies to calm his own.
And where the women had failed he had found that a good drink more than made up for it. He had gone through what felt like an entire bar, but at the end of his binge, Sebastian had felt much calmer.
But even though he had been feeling calmer, Sebastian had still known that had he been in the same room with his nephew, things would have gone south quick. So he’d had Lucas map out the whole building, so that he had less chance of running into his nephew during their day to day.
It had been humiliating, it had felt as though he was running away from the brat. But his patience had finally paid off, and he could now face his nephew, without killing him.
"Uncle, to what do I owe the...pleasure...of your visit," His nephew said pleasure, but Sebastian heard displeasure. But since the feeling was mutual, he would rather have been anywhere but in that office. He could not fault him on that, it was painful for both of them. But he had to endure the discomfort for a little while longer, if he was to leave with any bit of useful information. Coming to a stop in front of his nephew’s desk, Sebastian began his fact finding mission.
"Oh just checking up on you, sweet nephew. After all it must be a shock for you to find out that your treasured PA, has been going around company to company, looking for a job," Sebastian dropped the bomb as easiest walking. He’d heard the rumor while out with one of his acquaintances, he did not believe it, but that did not mean it did not need investigating.
Having come right out with his game, Sebastian watched his nephew. Many people would have been looking for a reaction. I gasp, a widening of the eyes, or maybe even standing, and all of a sudden getting angry.
But instead, Sebastian got none of that , which was a good thing, since that was not what he was looking for. What he got instead was a very careful lack of reaction. He was pretty sure that if he wanted. He could have reached out, tapped his nephew lightly on the cheek, and his mask would have cracked, and crumbled.
Sebastian wanted to crow in victory.
The question had been direct, nothing at all like Sebastian’s normal attacks. So his nephew had not had time to prepare himself. He was caught completely off guard, and his lack of reaction had given him away.
So there was some truth to the rumors, well, well, well, there was trouble in paradise. The golden duo was cracking.
It took everything in Sebastian to not start grinning from ear to ear. But his mood dampened somewhat when his nephew began talking.
"Uncle, your overactive imagination is getting to you. If you had spied better, you would have found out that the applications were a mistake. They were sent out unintentionally. Even if she were to be sending her application elsewhere, she has every right to do so. Emily Molson, is my personal assistant, not my personal property," He tried to look for signs of a lie. For anything, even the slightest tell. Something that would show that his nephew was lying, but there was nothing. The blank mask from earlier was completely gone, replaced by Derek’s usual cocky smirk.
Sebastian wanted to punch him, especially when he continued. Looking Sebastian up and down as though he were talking to a particularly slow student.
"If she wished to leave, I would simply wish her well and keep moving. As the number of temporary PAs I have had over the last few weeks have proven, she is just one of many. But rest assured. My PA will be returning at the beginning of next week. Come Monday, you will see her here,"
When his nephew said it like that, it made a lot of sense. All of the mean spirited joy that he had come in with completely gone, Sebastian struggled to maintain his composure.
Turning around Sebastian left without even saying goodbye. He had been sure that he had his nephew pinned, but clearly he had been wrong.
He should have known that the information he had was faulty. It was just too good to be true.
Derek’s shadow of a PA leaving.
Ha! There was a greater chance of pigs flying than of that happening.
Unaware of just how close to the truth he had actually been. Sebastian Haven walked back to his office to start plotting anew.
Had he gone back to his nephew’s office, he would have found him, up and pacing. A clear sign that he had been rattled.
