Chapter 116: Spell On You
Chapter 116: Spell On You
The moment that Derek Haven had walked out the door, whatever spell it was that he wove over Emily with his mere presence shattered into a million pieces. And with the magic gone, Emily was seething. What was she? A teenage girl! Just how many times would the man have to step on her for her to be able to stand up for herself.
Why on earth had she spent all of that time hyping herself up, and telling herself that she would be doing the right thing by finally confronting Derek about what he had done. Why did she take so much time obsessing over something and then when the moment came for her to do what needed to be done. She had just frozen.
No, freezing was not even the right word. She could not call what she did whenever she saw Derek freezing. Freezing meant inactivity. It meant that the brain was no longer able to function. That you could not move a single muscle, no matter what you did. But when Derek was around, Emily could move. She could think, she had free will. What she chose to do with that free will however, was very embarrassing.
When Derek was not around Emily was very sure of herself. She knew what she was going to do, and how she was going to do it. She needed answers and she needed an apology from him. That was it, plane and simple. But the moment she laid eyes on him, it was like all of that logic. All of that reason just flew out the window. She just fell into this routine where she wanted to take care of him because he looked sad, or vulnerable, or whatever it happened to be that particular night.
It was getting old and getting old fast. In fact it had never been young to start with. Emily was sick and tired of it, but how to break the cycle she had no idea.
The way that she was behaving was an embarrassment not only two herself, but if her mom found out should be embarrassed as well. Hell, even the ladies out in the street who had no idea who she was, would look at her, and pity her if they knew just how weak she got at the sight of her former boss.
It was not right.
She was not some love sick teenager, or a jilted woman who still had feelings for her ex. They had never even been in a romantic relationship.
She should have been able to just come out with it, and tell him...
"Derek Haven I did not like your underhanded dealings when it came to you blocking me from getting another job. The only reason that I am not dragging you to court is because despite your recent the unspeakable behaviour you were a good boss to me. The job that I’m holding now is only temporary, and if you know what is good for you, you will make sure that you lift this temporary ban that you have put on me,"
"When I leave it I want to get a job that fits with my expertise, and you are going to give me a good reference. Do not make me drag you through the mud. I have nothing to lose while you have a very massive reputation to protect,"
That was what the fearsome warrior in her wanted to say. That was the voice of the woman who had been through so many bumps in life she had developed a skin so thick diamonds could not pierce it.
But somehow every time she saw Derek, it was like all of that fearlessness just curled itself away like a cat retracting its claws , so that it could play with its kitten.
Something had to change, and it had to change soon otherwise Emily would lose all confidence and trust in her ability to take care of herself. Especially when it came to sneaky underhanded attacks like what Derek had pulled and not only that. There was a huge chance that by always smiling in his presence she was giving him the wrong idea. Letting him think that a Emily Molson could be messed with. That he could do whatever he wanted, and she would not retaliate in any way shape or form.
She had to make sure that he knew never to mess with her again, no matter what. So the next time he walked through those diner doors, and he would definitely be coming back since he had been doing so since that first night that he had walked in.
The next time he set foot at Bee’s. Emily would let him have it. She would make sure he knew that she had boundaries. She would definitely do it. Next time would be different.
That was the thought that ran around in Emily’s mind as she made her away home. By the time she finally made it to the apartment that she shared with her mom, and locked the door. Emily was no longer so angry at herself. And with her anger no longer so all consuming another thought floated to the surface. Something that she had thought of in the past but had never really engaged that much.
What if Derek was not coming to the diner to gloat or see if she would stay in her lane and go nowhere without her him by her side. What if he was there because he missed her? What if the thing that had caused him to look as though he had run through a tornado at full speed while being chased by bees that only struck underneath his eyes and left them lied and slightly puffy. Was not something at work. What if he looked such a mess because he had been wondering where she was. What if in coming to the diner every night he was actually there because he wanted to apologize. Just like she wanted him to apologize, but like her he took could never work up the courage to face the issue head on.
The thought was compelling but Emily quickly dismissed it. If she went in trying to rationalize us behaviour. Trying to make it look good, all because she had a soft spot for him, she would not be doing herself justice.
He would remain in her bad guy box until he decided to apologize.
