Chapter 96: Accepted
Jax thought for a long moment and knew easily what he was going to choose.
"I accept your quest," Jax said. "I will do it. I will kill the monkey and get the flower for you."
Jax heard a notification ring in his ears, letting him know that the quest had been accepted and had been placed in the Requirements section.
"I like your confidence, kid. I will wait for the day I get to see the flower," the hermit said.
Jax proudly nodded. "I will definitely succeed."
"Alright, you can leave now," the Wine Hermit said.
Jax nodded and prepared to leave, but he had something else he wanted to know about. Since he was already talking, he wanted to take his chances with this question too.
"Is there a way I can learn about the different herbs and everything associated with gathering them?" he asked. "I thought of asking Sir Ink, but I fear I don’t have any interesting story to get so much information."
Jax waited for something, but the hermit seemed to have quieted again. He scratched his head, wondering what was happening. He was sure the hermit hadn’t left just yet; he could see his silhouette in the room.
And yet...
Just as Jax was thinking of speaking again, something flew out of the window. He quickly caught it and saw that it was a metal coin.
"It’s a token," the hermit said. "Give this to Ink, and he’ll let you learn exactly what you want to learn."
Jax beamed brightly. "Thank you!"
"Don’t mention it. I’m helping myself through this. I don’t want you to mishandle the flower if you ever get to it," he said.
Jax grinned a little. "Still, thank you. I will get the flower to you soon."
"I’ll see you around, kid. Now leave."
The window shut down, everything within it darkening. The hermit had moved away, so Jax left as well.
He played around with the metal token, trying to decipher the etchings on its faces, but he could barely see anything in the dim light outside.
"Hey, can you fly over this? I need some light," Jax said.
"Are you stupid?" Gemma asked.
Jax was taken off guard. "What? Why would you ask me that?"
"You just asked me to hover over the coin so you could see it," she said. "Do you think I give off light?"
Jax frowned. "Don’t you?" he asked. It was so obvious.
"Obviously not," Gemma said. "If I gave off light, then everyone would be able to see me. The reason only you can see me is because that is how I exist in this world. My glow does not interact with anything other than just you."
Jax paused for a long minute, trying to understand what she was saying. It took him a while to realize that she was correct. He never actually saw her in reflections, did he?
"I never realized that," Jax said. "I guess I’m learning something new every day."
He returned to the tavern, and by the time he arrived, the dinner was ready. He sat down to have a hearty meal, surrounded by the rowdy taverners who had their fill of wine. He expected Mel to come by and sit next to him, but this time the table remained empty.
Mel was nowhere to be seen.
Jax wanted some updates on his armor, but it seemed he wouldn’t be getting any today. So, he quickly ate his dinner and returned to his room.
There he wondered, would someone else be accompanying him tonight as well?
* * * * *
Waking up early before sunrise, Jax found himself still wanting to sleep. He had slept quite late last night after playing around with Neeva for a while.
He wondered where he should go first.
He really wanted to check on his armor and learn about the different herbs from the Ink Hermit. However, since it was early morning, the most important thing to do was hunt.
So, Jax made his way to the north of the village, where he met Sho, Kaya, Cici, and Gram again.
"Are you ready to learn about Weapon Fortification?" Gram asked.
Jax nodded. "Yes. Please teach me."
Gram smiled, gesturing for Jax to give him something. Jax looked at the gesture and sighed. He then brought out the 20 opal stones and handed them over to Gram.
Gram’s smile turned into a grin as he placed the stones in his inventory and wrapped one hand around Jax’s shoulders. "Alright, it’s actually really easy if you are talented."
"You see, as a Warrior, your body is already filled with Navi, flowing around on its own, right? Now, what you need to do is imagine that this weapon you hold is an extension of your body."
"It will be difficult at first. It is not so easy to just imagine things as part of your body. But, if you can do it, you can extend your natural fortification into your weapon as well. And once you do it long enough, you will be able to use Weapon Fortification."
While Gram explained, the party walked into the forest, heading in a random direction they chose until they found a beast.
It was a Treehopper: a giant grasshopper which attacked by jumping from tree to tree. Its dash was incredibly fast, so the only way to defeat it was to use Spells to capture it before killing it.
Jax’s spell was perfect for this, as the Treehopper could only squirm around once captured in Earth threads.
Jax captured the one they found again, its body landing before him. Last time, he had to hit it multiple times before it died, but today, he wanted to kill it in one strike.
He remembered Gram’s recent teaching on how to use Weapon Fortification.
Imagine the axe is part of my body, he thought. Flow my Navi into the axe.
Something was happening.
Navi stirred within him as it headed outward, through his arms, and into the axe.
Jax’s eyes widened slightly. Had he succeeded in just one try?
