Chapter 48: Changing Phases

Jax jumped to the right as one of the legs came down on him. He stopped and swung at the leg as though he were chopping at a tree.

He hit the Spider Queen’s leg but only felt the force reverberate throughout his own body. Its legs were far stronger than its body. Destroying the Spider Queen’s legs would need more force than what Jax had.

They were both physically and magically resistant to attacks, so if any attacks were to be done, it would be better to target the spider’s actual body.

’I need to attack its joints, but I can’t reach them,’ he thought. He had read that those were weaker.

He also needed to wrap the Spider Queen in his poison threads, but the legs weren’t an optimal target due to their resistance. He had to get closer to its main body. Just a bit closer than he was right now.

As he contemplated that, he saw the Spider Queen open its mouth for the first time. For a moment, he believed it was the bite attack she used during the second phase, but then he remembered that it was a spell instead.

’Shit!’ he thought and began running. As he ran, he saw the spider’s legs sweep toward him. Not knowing what to do, Jax poured enough Navi into his legs to give himself a push and jumped high into the air.

Below him, right as the legs swept past him, a spray of white liquid covered the area, coming from the front of the Spider Queen. It was her constricting web skill, which would have incapacitated him for a while had he not dodged.

Still, he was not out of danger. He had jumped to dodge the spider’s spell, but now that he was in the air, the spider’s giant leg came swinging at him.

Jax quickly pulled back his axe and attacked as the leg came. He hit the leg as hard as he could, but it was not enough. The spider’s attack was much stronger, so he ended up being tossed back, flying into the cobwebs between the trees.

He stuck to them for a moment before the weight of his axe pulled him down to the ground.

Jax flipped through the air and landed on his leg, only to buckle down from the pain.

’Arghh...’ he grunted inwardly, the pain in his body quite intense, especially in his arms. ’The spider sure can hit hard.’

He thought of drinking a potion, but he didn’t. He didn’t need to do that just yet. He was only in pain and hadn’t actually been wounded in a way that needed healing. He should save his expensive potions for later.

Jax walked toward the boss again, who had its two front legs raised, ready to attack, while the other two legs were there to sweep at him. The remaining two legs weren’t even out of the ground.

The Spider Queen hadn’t moved a single time since the start.

As Jax got closer, he saw another spiderling come out. He sighed and got back into battle. He dodged one of the legs, jumped through a sweep, and arrived at the spider, which he quickly wrapped in his threads.

He was about to attack, but he noticed another leg coming down at him.

Jax dodged backward and quickly used his threads to wrap around its legs. While the legs were very resistant to poison, at this point, he couldn’t afford to let the opportunity go. The damage may be weak, but it was all he had at the moment.

The spiderling struggled within the constriction but could do absolutely nothing to free itself. Jax dodged a few more legs, wrapping each one in poison threads before arriving at the spiderling and killing it.

Once he killed it, he looked toward the spider, which was ready to use its spell again. At the same time, its leg came sweeping at him.

Jax jumped to dodge again, but this time he jumped to the side, over the leg. He landed on the other side, out of the target area of both the spell and the leg. The Spider Queen was also defenseless at the moment, so he ran up to it and delivered another strong axe strike.

The spider’s body was strong, but even then, it was wounded by the axe. Using this opportunity, Jax also used his spell.

Divine Threads.

Many threads appeared around the spider’s neck, each pale green in color as they took on the poison element. With this many threads, the spider would certainly start to take a lot of damage. All Jax really needed to do now was stay back and dodge its attacks.

He just needed to survive.

He quickly ran away and began wasting the spider’s time, dodging each one of its attacks. Considering how far Jax stayed away from the spider, the only attack it could use was its four legs, and they weren’t quick enough to do anything.

It sent spiderlings to fight from time to time, but they were easily dealt with as well.

The remaining portion of the fight went relatively easily as the poison threads slowly took care of the Spider Queen.

That was until it entered its second phase.

Boss monsters tended to have at least two phases, each of which drastically changed the way they fought.

As the Spider Queen’s color changed from purple to red, Jax knew that its phase had changed, meaning its fighting style would change as well.

The Spider Queen released its remaining four legs from the ground and slowly brought itself out of the giant hole in the center of its lair. Then, with all of its eight legs, it started moving.

Jax had read about the Spider Queen’s second phase and knew that it was strong even for multiple fighters. As the phase changed, the spider would go from docile and immobile to frenzied and highly mobile.

Its eight eyes looked down toward Jax, its fangs finally coming out, full of poison.

Jax had forced it to enter its second phase, and now he was going to have to deal with it all on his own.
