Chapter 111: The Elite Treant
Chapter 111: The Elite Treant
The time it took for his Spell Stone to accept Navi again was 10 seconds. So for the next 10 seconds, he couldn’t use Twin Strike at all.
Jax was fine with that.
He prepared for the Treant’s attack, waiting for the vines to whip at him again, but the vines didn’t move at all.
"Hmm?"
He felt the ground shake beneath him, and a moment later, something erupted out of it. He leapt out of the way just a heartbeat before a thick root lashed out where his head had been.
It left a loud cracking sound that rang in Jax’s left ear. That had been close.
’Roots?’ Jax thought, surprised. No Treant had ever used its roots in the past 2 months he had fought them. But then, this was no ordinary Treant after all.
It was an Elite Treant. There hadn’t been much information on elite monsters in the book he had read. At least, he didn’t remember anything at all.
’It can attack in other ways than just the vines,’ Jax thought. ’I’ll have to prepare for anything.’
The Treant roared and the roots slid back into the ground. The Treant began moving, approaching Jax. At the same time, vines appeared from either side of it, multiplying into more than just a few.
Then, they began slamming down on Jax.
’Shit!’
Jax immediately ran to the side, dodging the flurry of whip-like attacks that came from the whip-like vines. He hid behind one of the trees, only to have the vine destroy it in a single strike, sending shards of wood flying everywhere.
Jax still hid behind it, waiting for the Treant to stop.
Just then, the ground beneath him shook again.
Jax didn’t even have a chance to dodge as two roots appeared around his leg, grabbing him. They immediately dragged him into the air, pulling him toward the Treant.
Jax twisted his body, swinging at one of the roots, cutting it. He then dangled from the other leg and watched upside down as the Treant whipped at him with its vines.
Jax swung for the root again, managing to barely cut it, only for the vine to still slam onto him. He was tossed a distance away, where he slammed into a tree.
It was only thanks to his armor that he managed to stand back up immediately with only pain and no broken bones.
Jax breathed in deeply, realizing just how strong the monster was. It was definitely something he wasn’t meant to fight all by himself, especially for a monster that couldn’t be bound so easily.
Jax saw the monster approach him from the corner of his eye and knew he needed to get back into the fight, to kill it.
The ground beneath his feet trembled again, and this time Jax moved way ahead of the roots coming out of the ground. He picked himself back up and ran toward the monster, preparing himself for the whips.
He understood, more or less, the angle at which the attacks would come, so he quickly dodged out of the way and jumped toward the Treant again.
He swung down his axe as he hoped that his poison threads had done their job.
Thankfully, they had.
With the Twin Strike spell active, the axe cut through one of the branches, and cut halfway through into the second branch. The Treant was knocked to the side, at which point Jax swung down at its vines.
He severed 3 of the 5 vines easily, and finally landed on the ground. With the Treant disoriented, he had the chance to attack it a few more times, weaken it.
Jax needed to dodge the monster’s attacks more times than he could attack it. He had few chances to cut down its branches.
The battle lasted much longer than any other fights, most of which was spent with Jax trying to evade the Treant’s attacks and get closer. His poison did most of the damage, which slowed the monster down a lot in the later stages, allowing him a chance to finally finish it.
The Treant was down a lot of vines, and the rest that were growing back weren’t doing so fast enough.
Jax dodged the roots that came out of the ground and made his way toward the Treant to get rid of its final branch. Just as he jumped toward it, he heard something to the side.
He saw movement out of his peripheral vision and noticed a Starving Vulture swinging down toward him. At the same time, the Treant was already whipping its remaining vines at him.
For the split second, Jax felt his world go slow, as if he was frozen there and unable to figure out what he was supposed to do. He could only wait as the bird came flying down toward him.
At the last second, something else appeared from the ground and slammed into the diving bird.
Jax didn’t know what had happened, but it gave him the chance he needed.
He twisted his body right in time and dodged the vine whip, allowing his axe to swing down at the Treant.
Twin Strike activated and an image of the axe appeared behind it, coming down with the axe.
Jax landed the strike on the Treant’s final branch, cutting halfway into it. The wood split, releasing a loud thump, along with which came the second attack that cleaved through it. That released a large cracking sound as the Treant’s final branch was destroyed.
The Treant fell to the ground, and Jax landed to the side. Immediately, he could hear the notifications as the Treant died.
Twenty opal stones flew out from its body, which Jax took immediately, before turning toward the bird to see what was happening there.
When he looked, he saw a young man stabbing a long bone spear through its head, as four opal stones flew out of the bird’s body.
"Phew!" the young man cleared his brows and turned toward Jax. "Sorry about that. I hope you don’t mind me killing this bird."
