Chapter 103: Spell Stone

Jax looked stunned.

"You added a Spell Slot to my axe?" he asked, unable to believe what he was seeing. This was the first time he had seen a spell slot in any equipment other than the axe he had received from the dead-not-dead man.

"I did," she said, crossing her arms before her chest with some pride. "Are you ready to apologize?"

Jax turned. "Ap— yes, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped at you like that. It was my bad."

Mel smirked. "Good. Now, try it out. See how well your axe works."

Jax looked at the axe and nodded. He brought out the one Spell Stone he had and attached it to the axe. The moment he brought it close to the Spell Slot, the Spell Stone snapped into place like metal to a magnet.

A jolt of electric tingle passed through Jax’s body the moment it happened, and the axe cried out in a low resonance. The hum lasted for a few seconds.

"Wow! I didn’t expect it to—"

"You have a Spell Stone?!" Mel nearly screamed out loud in surprise. Her eyes were wide, staring at the handle of the axe where the pale white stone glistened with chromatic aberration on its surface.

"Yes," Jax said.

"What is that? How did you get it?"

"It lets me attack twice in a single strike. I got it from the gift box."

"Woah!" Mel said, very much fascinated by the axe more than his words. It took her a moment to realize what he had said.

She looked up from the axe and at him. "You got it from a gift box? Don’t they just give you a bunch of Opal stones?"

"I think so," Jax said.

"Then how..." her mind raced. "What tier box did you get?"

"Third," Jax said.

Her eyes widened. "You came here with a 3-Star Ticket?"

Jax found some amusement in her expression. "Yes, I did," he said. "What was your ticket?"

"1-Star," she said absentmindedly. "Wait, why did they let you keep the 3-Star ticket?"

"They? Who?" Jax asked, wondering if there was some sort of rule against keeping 3-Star tickets.

"Your party members. The ones you fought in the maze with," she said.

Jax narrowed his eyes. "Didn’t I already tell you that I have no experience in fighting in parties?" he asked. "That’s why you told me to join one in the first place."

"Huh? Oh, right. I did," Mel said, but that made even less sense to her then. "Wait, then how many people did your group have? Please don’t tell me..."

"Just me alone," Jax answered. Not only did he find no reason to hide that information, certain feelings within him made him give away that information voluntarily.

Mel’s eyes widened at that point, unable to believe. "How did you defeat a 3-Star ticket boss all on your own?" she asked.

"By the skin of my teeth," Jax said. "If I hadn’t met someone to save me after I had gotten out of the maze, I would’ve likely died."

"But you still beat one? All on your own?" she asked. "How..."

"Do you want to find out?" Jax asked.

Mel nodded.

"I’ll tell you my secret, but on one condition," Jax said.

Mel’s eyes narrowed. "What condition?" she asked.

"You have to join my party," Jax said. "I want you to register with me in 6 months when the next trial starts."

Mel’s brows raised slightly. "Your party? Which means just you, doesn’t it?" she asked.

"For now, yes. But I plan on finding others too," Jax said. "So, what do you say?"

Melayne thought for a moment and shook her head. "I’m sorry. I cannot make such a promise. I do not know when I’ll be leaving this place."

"Huh? Why not?" Jax asked.

Melayne hesitated for a moment and sighed. "Remember when I said that I couldn’t find anyone to register with this time around?" she asked.

Jax nodded. "What about it?"

"Truth is, there were plenty that wanted me to join," she said. "But I had to refuse them."

"Huh? Why?"

"Because I am not allowed to register just yet. I have not fulfilled my Requirements just yet," Mel said.

"But you have, haven’t you?" he asked. "You’re already in the 1-Star Emerald stage, and you had plenty of parties to join. Those are the requirements."

"For everyone else, yes. But for me, there is sadly one other," she said with a dejected look.

Jax paused for a long moment, trying to think of what she could be talking about. A Requirement other than the regular 2; he had one of those, didn’t he?

"Did you accept an official Quest?" he asked.

Mel’s eyes widened. "How do you know about Official Quests?" she asked.

"Because I just took one too," Jax said. "Can’t you just complete the quest?"

"Wait, wait, wait. You took a quest? Where? How?"

"The Wine Hermit. He’s promised to teach me how he makes his wines," Jax said. "Did you know they sell for a lot?"

Mel still couldn’t believe her ears. "What’s... what’s your quest?" she asked.

"I have to find this one flower that grows in the center of the lake where the Lakeborn Monkey is," Jax said.

"Oh, you’re in just as bad a situation as me, aren’t you?"

Jax frowned. "What do you mean? How’s my situation bad?" he asked.

"Well, it’s bad, isn’t it? Finding a Wild boss is difficult to begin with, and even that chance drops by a third because there are 2 other bosses you could meet instead."

"Sure. But I just have to run around the forest searching for it. I’m sure I can find it sooner or later."

Mel wondered something and asked, "You do know that only one Wild Boss spawns every day, right? And if someone doesn’t get to it, it won’t disappear until someone clears it, the chances of which aren’t that good either."

"Huh? Wait, don’t all 3 bosses spawn at the same time?" he asked. "The forest has 3 bosses after all."

"No, only one boss spawns at a time," Mel said. "Who told you all 3 bosses spawned at once?"
