Chapter 76: What Are You?
Chapter 76: What Are You?
The wind didn’t seem to affect my skin anymore... I merely focus on the unearthly creature in the water who was peaked in interest by the sight of me. Could this be one of the creatures that inhabit this forest? ’Non-Dimensional creatures’ as William called them... like Elvenia, Severus, and Sophia.
Only that this one appears to be different, her shiny silver scales told me exactly that...
"What are you?" her angelic voice came, enough to make one’s legs weak.
I stood frozen in my spot unable to take my eyes off the mystical being before me... a side of my brain telling me to run like a madwoman and the other whelming with curiosity.
Too bad... curiosity has always been my strongest weakness, even in the face of the unknown I want to savor any knowledge that I can...
"I-I’m no one" I reply trying to make my voice sound less quivering but I always do a bad job at that.
"No one," I noticed her eyes glitter as the leaves parted for little sunlight. Everything about her glitters just like the water she’s in, like a perfect combination of the very extension of the moisture itself.
She moved, the water waving as she did... until her scaled elbows rested on the grass but she didn’t come out of the water she didn’t show me the rest of her I was dying to see... was she scaled all the way down to her legs?
Her blue eyes are not leaving me for even a minute. "So you’re no one?"
I nodded only my heartbeat leaping in my chest, I don’t know what she is but I knew I should be careful and not say who I am...
She leveled her gaze on my feet. "Feet..." she mouths maybe in distaste or in curiosity but I couldn’t tell which. The more she speaks the more her voice gets to my ears, it was just too sweet to them enough to want me to close my eyes like I was coming under a spell.
"W-What are you?" I asked the curiosity getting the better of me and she narrowed her eyes like I wasn’t supposed to ask her that question. Why does it seem like I sound rude? She just asked me the very same question so it’s only neutral I did the same, right?
But she seemed to ignore me, dwelling on her own curiosity further like I was more important than she was... "I have never heard of ’no one’ in this domain..." she interjected.
I swallowed a lump in my throat, my nervous spiking but I tried to ease my tension by gripping my shoes in my hand tightly.
"You’re not just a ’no one’, you have feet... you can’t be one of those trolls or an animal"
I gulped again, a lump in my throat restricting me from speaking, what if she finds out what I am?
"What is ’no one’ doing in this river flow? This territory belongs to the Merfolks"
"I’m sorry for trespassing but I’m quite lost"
"Lost?" she looked me up and down like I was some strange being when she was clearly the one who is... typical.
"Then you’re not from around here? Where do you come from?"
Her questions were getting intimating and I was worried she was trying to figure me out. Be polite as you can Ava.
"It’s getting late... if you tell me how to get out of the ’Merfolk’ territory I will be out of your hair"
Merfolk... it sounds too foreign to me, maybe I will ask William what that is...
"Oh you’re lost?" a tiny voice came grabbing our attention and we both turned to a small creature against the tree sitting on it, I gasped observing the small spectacle I have never seen before smiling down at me. Dark-skinned, with brown short hair hidden under a pointy hat as she grabs it, she looked too small to be called a human but I knew she wasn’t a human either, she was 1 foot in height. Strange clothing I assumed to be made of leaves as well as her hat. She has pointy cute ears too.
"And what are you doing here, damn pixie?" the girl in the water snapped, seeming incensed.
The being called a pixie twitched her small wings I finally noticed and flew into the air, down to me. "I smelt something pleasing, that’s why? Unlike you who smells foul"
I heard a snarl coming from the girl and I caught notice of her sharp teeth, okay that was scary. I tumbled backward with wide eyes just at the mere sight of it.
"You said you’re lost?"
I turned my eyes to the being in the air before me, smiling at me. I nodded.
"Oh, where are my manners... I’m a pixie, but you can call me Cleo"
A pixie, a Merfolk, I recorded in my head.
"Come I will lead you away from the Merfolk territory, they are always possessive of their rivers" she giggled, flying ahead a way for me to follow.
I took a step forward.
"Never trust a Pixie"
Huh?
I turned but didn’t see the scaled girl again, the water only waved... signifying she had submerged under... Does she live underwater? I shivered at the thought.
"Come on now" Cleo called and I followed.
"So are you ’no one’ like you told the Merfolk?" Cleo was always amused as she spoke, she kinda reminds me of Severus.
"Y-Yes?"
She halted and stopped right before my face and took a deep sniff. "You don’t smell like no one... I’m not that narrow minded like the Merfolk’’ she giggled.
"Well... I-I..."
"It’s alright if you don’t want to say, I understand," she said softly as flew ahead and I took a deep breath of relief, happy she wasn’t pushing. But wait... how does she know that I was ’no one’? Was she eavesdropping all this time?
"You know it has been rather chilly all day, so icy that it got everyone in their homes, alas it definitely the Fox guardian of the Library roaming around these parts"
