Chapter 258: Tasty and Pretty Fisherman 108 (1 more update)
Xiao Yu and her group only sold lunch, so after packing up their stand, they headed back home because there was an important task to do today.
On their way back, Xiao Yu told Yaya what the Shopkeeper had said, which made Yaya look stunned.
"Sister, are you serious? The Shopkeeper really wants to take care of our Grandma?"
"Yes, so let’s use this next half a year while Grandma is at home to secretly make more salt. Otherwise, we’d have to keep traveling back and forth."
Yaya nodded vigorously, "Right, right, that’s exactly it. The Shopkeeper is so kind, and we have nothing to give in return."
So Xiao Yu and Yaya took a detour to the livestock shop. After visiting three different stores and bargaining, as well as comparing goods, they eventually bought a small donkey and a covered cart for five silver taels, simply called a donkey cart.
It was four taels without a cover, and five taels with one. Thinking it might rain and that traveling without a cover could be inconvenient, they simply opted for the covered one.
Moreover, Xiao Yu had already found out that to travel to Beijing, they could go by land. They certainly couldn’t walk all the way, so this donkey cart would come in handy when it was time to leave, easing the sisters’ burden a lot. Five silver taels was not too expensive, and Xiao Yu didn’t even blink before buying it.
Under the shopkeeper’s guidance, she tried a few times and pretty much got the hang of it. Luckily, although the road from the town to Huagang Village was bumpy, it was not steep. The donkey cart could pass through, and what usually took two hours, now took just thirty to forty minutes.
When they reached the village around four or five o’clock, many villagers saw the sisters return in the cart, staring gaping while showing envious expressions.
Chattering, they asked, "Hey, Yaya, is this your family’s new donkey cart?"
Yaya shook her head, "No, it’s not ours. My sister bought it. It’s hers, not mine."
"Oh my, what’s the difference? Isn’t she living at your place now? How much was it? Expensive or not? If it’s cheap, we might also buy one."
Yaya grinned, showing her teeth, "Auntie Fatty, it’s not expensive. Just five silver taels. When you go buy one, remember to tell my sister. Introducing another old customer can get you a discount!"
Hearing about the five silver taels, Auntie Fatty’s smile froze, Xiao Yu shook her head helplessly, lightly flicked the whip, and the donkey leisurely started to move forward.
After the sisters left, Auntie Fatty muttered, "What’s so great about that? It’s only five silver taels. But with money, why not buy a boat? Why a donkey cart? How often can one go to town in a month that they need a cart? Showing off much?"
"Auntie Fatty, you don’t go even twice a month, but they go every day. Didn’t you see, on the first day of working they rushed back with a donkey cart. That means the sisters’ business is doing quite well. I heard about it, that ’small potato,’ it’s really popular. How did they manage to get involved with the Yingbin Building’s Shopkeeper?"
"Who knows? I asked Aunt Liu, but she wouldn’t say anything, kept saying she didn’t know. How could she not know? She just doesn’t want us to know."
...
No matter how the villagers gossiped, Xiao Yu didn’t care. She drove the donkey cart straight home, unloaded it, tethered the donkey where the pigsty used to be, added some water to the stone trough, and then sent Yaya to find some dry grass on the hill behind to feed it while she made a trip to see the village chief.
