Chapter 58: Chapter 58
Lance grabbed his phone and called Valerie.
The call was connected after a few seconds, and Valerie started their conversation.
—
"So? Are you good now?" Valerie asked. She wasn’t all that surprised that Lance would act like a madman last night. She knew her cousin long enough, and Lance was the type whose emotions would heighten when he was drunk.
It was obvious that he was deeply in love with Madeline Rose. So there was nothing much she could do last night other than tell him to sleep, and then they could have a proper conversation now.
"I’m fully sober now," Lance confirmed.
"Then, what should we do next? Surely, you won’t do stupid stuff like pull all of your funding for this reality show, right?" Valerie brushed up on the much-dreaded topic. She didn’t want her effort to go down the drain just because her cousin was jealous.
"No, I won’t do that. This reality show has a lot of potential," Lance said. "But I want you to disqualify Madeline in the next episode."
"WHAT?!" Valerie’s jaw dropped. "You want Madeline out of the show? You said this reality show is for her!"
"I changed my mind. I want her out," Lance insisted. "Find something to disqualify her or make one. I don’t care. I just want her back to Los Angeles as soon as possible."
"I can’t do that," Valerie said. "Madeline Rose has proven herself to be the best cast member. I can’t let the gold mine slip out of my hand."
"Why don’t you tell me the urgency? Why do you want her back?" Valerie asked. "Are you that desperate to separate her from Zane? I didn’t know that you’re an insecure man."
"I’m not insecure," Lance stated. "I just don’t want MY woman to get touched by another man."
"Well, you’re in for a surprise because they spent a night together in the honeymoon bungalow, and Madeline searched for all the recording devices and threw them into the sea. So we don’t know what they are doing," Valerie reported.
Lance clenched his phone. His body was trembling out of rage, and the fire in his heart was burning so painfully that he thought he’d explode in the next second.
"Wait, I didn’t mean to make you angry." Valerie realized she had made a blunder. So she tried to backpedal. "What I mean is, we don’t know if they did it. So why don’t I send someone to check on them, then make another three-way phone call like yesterday? You can ask her yourself."
Valerie doubted that Madeline didn’t have sex with Zane last night.
They seemed to be into each other, and having sex would be the next natural thing to do.
But she hoped Madeline was somehow loyal to Lance, or else everything would just turn to ash by the time Lance was blinded with rage and jealousy.
"No need. I will ask her myself," Lance said.
"Yeah, that’s why I’m about to connect you to a three-way phone call—"
"—No," Lance interrupted. "What I mean is. I will fly to Bali tonight or tomorrow morning. I will come and bring her back myself."
Valerie’s heart jumped. She panicked, knowing that Lance would ruin the whole thing the moment he stepped out of the Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali.
"No, don’t, don’t do that, Lance!"
"Why not? I own that reality show. I have all the right to come and see the progress of the show I sponsored."
’I’m pretty sure you’ll come to ruin it,’ Valerie said in her heart. She began to find a reason to stop Lance from coming. She couldn’t have his unprofessional and jealous ass making a ruckus in the set!
"You told me a few days ago that you’re extremely busy at work because of the pressure from Theodore. I think you should focus on that first," Valerie suggested.
She knew there was an infighting between the Grant brothers. She didn’t really understand what they were fighting about since all of them were raised right by their parents, but things could’ve changed eventually.
And maybe the power struggle was inevitable in the end.
Nevertheless, she could use this reason to delay Lance’s arrival.
"I can postpone all the meetings with the investors and board of directors, but I can’t postpone my visit to Bali," Lance said. "My girlfriend might’ve forgotten about me by the time I meet her again next month."
"No, your meetings are important. What if they make a decision or cross your authority while you’re away? You can’t trust anyone but yourself, right?" Valerie continued to persuade him.
Lance’s resolution began to waver.
Indeed, everyone in his company leaned towards his big brother, Theodore, more than him. In their eyes, Lance was basically an inferior version of his brother.
So, if Lance left the company for far too long in such a critical situation, they might’ve made a shady deal with Theodore behind his back and forced him to resign.
He gritted his teeth.
He was angry that he couldn’t even retrieve his supposed girlfriend.
"Fine, I will go next week," Lance said. "I will make sure to work my ass off to protect my company for a whole week. So Theo won’t be able to tinker with it, but I trust you will do what I told you."
"And that would be?" Valerie asked.
"Don’t let them win," Lance said. "Even if they win, make sure they won’t be able to spend time in that honeymoon bungalow."
"But that’s part of the game."
"I don’t care. Just tell them the bungalow got swept away by a tsunami or something. Give them a cash prize or something else to make up for the honeymoon bungalow."
"Alright, that’s doable," Valerie said, relieved. She was worried he would actually make a ruckus. But this also meant she only had a week or so to eliminate Madeline fairly.
’Madeline has made so much impact from the first episode already. There’s no way I can just disqualify her despite her controversy,’ Valerie thought.
