She Became A Downfall Noble Lady -
Chapter 646 - 644: Taking the Blame
Chapter 646: Chapter 644: Taking the Blame
Ye Xinyan was explaining to Lady Qin as she asked for her opinion. After they had flipped through an entire booklet, the conversation between Lady Qin and Ye Xinyan became much smoother.
The two of them discussed and ordered a soup for each of the three of them, and then they ordered six kinds of snacks and four plates of dried fruits.
The servant woman from the restaurant took the menu booklet, repeated the snacks they had ordered to confirm, and asked, "Does the servant have it correct? If there are no issues, the servant will go down and have the kitchen prepare it right away."
Ye Xinyan looked towards Lady Qin, "Do you think we need to add anything else?"
Lady Qin hurriedly agreed, "That’s perfect, that’s perfect, it’s already quite a feast. We’re just here to talk, having these snacks is more than enough."
Watching the servant woman leave, Lady Qin glanced at the maids and servant women in the room, feeling that it was not appropriate to speak certain things in front of so many people.
She glanced at Nanny Hong, who had long been watching for her mistress’s cues. If their lady wished to speak privately with Miss Ye, it surely could not be done in front of so many people, could it?
Upon seeing Lady Qin’s look, Nanny Hong immediately understood. She first curtsied to Ye Xinyan and apologized, "Since Miss is speaking with my lady, we servants shall not stay by your side. We will wait outside the door, and if Miss or my lady needs anything, just call for us."
Having said that, she curtsied again to Ye Xinyan and then signaled two maids to follow her out of the room.
Ye Xinyan naturally understood that it was not easy for Lady Qin to speak in front of too many people, and after exchanging a glance with Jiang Yifan, she said to Lady Qin, "You, as my elder, should not be left without attendants. Let Nanny Hong stay. Please don’t overthink it; I can still take a few commands from my elders."
Then she turned her head and instructed Nanny Jin, "Nanny, stay in the room as well, and let Jiu Yue wait at the door. If needed, we will call on them."
Lady Qin, observing Ye Xinyan’s arrangements, felt completely satisfied. As the old saying goes, a son is not ashamed of being scolded by his father, and a subject by his sovereign. If Ye Xinyan could maintain a peaceful demeanor in the face of possible questioning from her, then she would indeed be an excellent candidate for a daughter-in-law.
Jiang Yifan also looked at his favored woman with great joy. He had spent quite some time persuading his mother to be tactful in her conversation with Ah Yan, not wanting to hurt her dignity. Yet he had not expected that Ah Yan, in turn, would take such care of his and his mother’s face.
He felt deeply reassured, admiring Ye Xinyan unabashedly, with a smile almost tangible in his eyes. How could his mother not be pleased with such a woman?
When only Lady Qin, her son, Ye Xinyan, and the two nannies remained in the room,
Lady Qin thought it over, weighing the words she had intended to say, and suddenly felt that, perhaps after seeing Ye Xinyan like this, there might not be much need to say anything after all.
If this woman’s character was still as before, only having become more profound in her thoughts after those hardships and twists, capable of performing so well on the surface and concealing everything so tightly, even if she were to probe extensively, she might not get to the bottom of it.
And if she really was genuine inside and out, just as she seemed to be, then there was even less to talk about. Her son’s cherished thoughts and their future life might not be guaranteed perfect bliss, but at the very least, it wouldn’t be far off.
Lady Qin looked at Ye Xinyan kindly and said, "I suppose Yuanfan’s reason for seeking out Miss Ye to come here also indicates the purpose of this meeting. It is because of Miss Ye’s broad-mindedness that she could come here calmly. I will be so bold as to speak a few words with Miss Ye."
Jiang Yifan’s earnest gaze immediately shifted towards Ye Xinyan.
Meeting that gaze, Ye Xinyan felt stifled. What was this situation, was she expected to respond agreeably to his mother’s questions? Had this been in her former life, she definitely wouldn’t have shown him any kindness, but who could she blame for her misfortune in getting here, and besides, she was facing the future mother-in-law who was of crucial importance in this feudal society.
Ye Xinyan discreetly withdrew her gaze and responded to Lady Qin, "The Eldest Son had mentioned to me that you had something to say. Madam, please feel free to instruct me. In recent years, I have been making a living on my own, and perhaps I am somewhat negligent in proper etiquette. I hope you will be forgiving if I have shown any discourtesy."
Lady Qin warmly took Ye Xinyan’s hand, gently patted the back of it twice, and then said, "Since Miss Ye has already spoken thus, I won’t be reserved anymore. Yuanfan is the eldest son of the family, and having been trained by a master from a young age, he is indeed a responsible child. I’ve never seen him take such an interest in anyone as he has with you, seeming to be truly enamored."
Ye Xinyan’s brows twitched. How embarrassingly had Jiang Yifan acted in front of his mother to make her say such things?
Lady Qin noticed the slight twitch in Ye Xinyan’s brow and the hint of embarrassment on her cheeks, and suddenly found the girl rather amusing. That look of annoyed shyness mixed with helplessness was endearingly cute.
"Although Yuanfan holds such feelings, I was very concerned that the two of you did not have a happy married life before, so I wanted to see you in person. Since you are such a good child, there’s really no need for me to say much."
Lady Qin paused, but still decided to speak her mind, "Child, have you really thought it over? You and he are to live a life together. Regardless of whether Yuanfan is good or not, he at least doesn’t have any major faults."
Having said this, Lady Qin felt it was somewhat inappropriate, so she stopped. It seemed as if she was implying that her own child had no faults, and all faults lay with Ye Xinyan.
Ye Xinyan’s face was full of black lines, but the old lady was not wrong—Jiang Yifan indeed didn’t have any major faults. At most, it was his abhorrent inaction and distaste towards the original host. And here she was, taking the fall for someone else again.
Jiang Yifan was sitting next to Lady Qin, watching Ye Xinyan attentively without blinking, fearful that she might get annoyed. He was ready to intervene and distract if her expression truly became aggrieved.
Lady Qin softened her tone before continuing, "It’s been quite a few years since back then, and you have grown up a bit. Our family is still not a prestigious clan, and we can’t offer much glamor and honor. You should think carefully, can you bear living a life without much wealth and prestige?"
Jiang Yifan saw that Ye Xinyan’s expression was quite good and got ahead of himself, nodding vigorously at Ye Xinyan, hoping for her to show some sign of agreement.
Ye Xinyan glanced at Jiang Yifan’s behavior, internally criticizing him. Were they that close? Ever since she came in, he had been making gestures at her; they certainly didn’t have that kind of tacit understanding, did they?
While inwardly criticizing, she suddenly understood Lady Qin’s feelings. Faced with such a son, perhaps even if Lady Qin was unwilling for her son to reconcile a broken relationship, she likely couldn’t harden her heart against him.
Oh, well, isn’t she eager to marry? And just happened upon Jiang Yifan who is determined to marry her. It’s fortunate to encounter such a young and talented man, and she is merely taking the place of the original host. After all, someone has to take on this role, right?
