Chapter 531: Chapter 529: The Feeling of Being Unable to Argue
Jiang Yifan felt the soft touch on his forehead, his heart went blank for a moment, followed by a surge of ecstasy. But this ecstasy had already been hidden deep in his heart by the time he met Ye Xinyan’s gaze.
Thus, when Ye Xinyan sensed something amiss and glanced toward Jiang Yifan, he calmly met her eyes and said, "Men and women should not touch hands when giving or receiving objects, Ah Yan, remember what you have done."
Ye Xinyan’s already embarrassed complexion immediately stiffened, and she paused for a few breaths before hastily trying to make excuses, "Oh, I thought Lord Jiang was ill, but it’s good that you’re not, really good." She better hurry and leave; the words he had just spoken sounded a bit like entrapment.
Of course, Lord Jiang wouldn’t pass up such a good opportunity, and with gentle eyes, he said, "Ah Yan, I’m so happy that you care so much about me."
Ye Xinyan stopped in her tracks, about to leave, and said earnestly, "I believe that anyone who noticed something wrong with Lord Jiang would have done the same."
Jiang Yifan also nodded seriously, "I understand Ah Yan’s intentions."
"Intention my ass! Can’t we even clarify such a minor matter?"
Ye Xinyan paused, realizing that saying more would only make things worse. If she ignored him, he probably wouldn’t find it interesting anymore. Ye Xinyan stopped entangling with Jiang Yifan over this issue and quickly walked out of the guest room. Only when she turned the corner, out of Jiang Yifan’s sight, did she stomp her foot in immense annoyance.
Behind her, the maid from Song Ping’s Household and Jiu Zhen exchanged glances. Did the eldest missy suffer a loss in her conversation with Lord Jiang?
After finishing their work, Ye Xinyan and Zhou Biyao returned to the back yard, where Ye Xinyan noticed that Madam Yin looked different than usual, her eyes full of satisfaction and contentment.
Before Ye Xinyan could speak, Zhou Biyao asked Madam Yin with a smile, "Madam seems very happy. Have you encountered something delightful?"
Madam Yin laughed and said, "With all of you being so capable, of course I am happy." She pushed the two girls, "Go change your clothes and wash your hands and face. The kitchen has prepared your favorite dishes. We’ll set the meal when Brother Jia returns. The men have had their meal, for dinner they just need to add a bowl of noodle soup. You two girls must reward yourselves properly, you are hardworking good children, each admirable in your own right."
Madam Yin’s chamber had Ye Xinyan’s everyday clothes, so Ye Xinyan, not wanting to go back to her own room, changed there and washed her hands and face. Madam Yin followed Ye Xinyan closely, her gaze filled with pride and joy as she watched her.
Ye Xinyan originally thought Madam Yin’s joy was due to the successful trial of the Chain Inversion Device, but the more she observed, the more it didn’t feel right. After handing the towel she used to wash her hands and face to Cui Zhu, she gave Madam Yin another look and finally couldn’t help asking, "Mother, is there another reason for your happiness?" Her heart felt uneasy with Madam Yin following her around so attentively.
Madam Yin had been smiling with pursed lips, but at Ye Xinyan’s question, her smile spread joyfully across her face. However, fearing her daughter might be shy, she first waved her hand to dismiss Nanny Huang and the others, then eagerly pulled Ye Xinyan down to sit on the couch.
"Ah Yan, you truly have relieved a great worry of mine. That’s right, Yuanfan is a good child. Although you have not been on good terms before, you are also much to blame, not just Yuanfan alone. Now it’s good, your lifelong matter has been settled, and I can finally be at ease," Madam Yin babbled on endlessly with her repetitive words.
Though Madam Yin’s words were somewhat vague, Ye Xinyan immediately thought of the incident that had occurred in the guest room in the afternoon, and a bad feeling rose in her heart.
"What’s happened to my lifelong matter? What does it have to do with Lord Jiang?" Ye Xinyan felt increasingly uneasy inside. It probably wasn’t what she was thinking, right?
"Child, why do you still call him Lord Jiang? It sounds so distant." Madam Yin just started speaking and then laughed to herself, "Right, you haven’t had your marriage rites again; it’s only proper for you to address him that way. Look at me, I’m so happy I’m getting confused."
"Marriage, marriage rites?" The feeling that something was wrong intensified.
Madam Yin gently patted Ye Xinyan’s hand, happily saying, "Yuanfan said that even though you’re reconciling, he will still go through the full betrothal process, with a matchmaker and everything, to marry you and welcome you into the family."
Ye Xinyan opened her mouth wide, speechless for a long time before regaining her composure, "No, that’s not... what are you talking about, Mom? What betrothal process? Who’s reconciling with whom? Please clarify."
Listening to her, it sounded like she was discussing her and Jiang Yifan, but Ye Xinyan didn’t quite dare to believe it. There was no reason for this; she hadn’t done anything, right? All she did was check if Jiang Yifan had a fever...
"Child, how could you keep something like this from your mother?" Madam Yin lightly scolded, her face showing an irrepressible smile, "Ah Yan, don’t be embarrassed. You agreeing to Yuanfan makes me very happy; I would never laugh at you."
Ye Xinyan looked doubtful as her gaze scanned Madam Yin’s face several times, verifying that her mother was not joking; then she became even more panicked, "Mom, what are you talking about? What’s going on here? What happened to Jiang Yifan? I didn’t agree to anything with him!"
Madam Yin looked steadily at Ye Xinyan and after a long while, hesitatingly asked, "Didn’t Yuanfan talk to you this afternoon? He said he asked if you’d be willing to marry him, and that you agreed, and also... also..." Madam Yin seemed to find it difficult to continue, stuttering several times before going on, "He said you even touched his forehead."
"Touched his grandma..." His grandma’s leg! Ye Xinyan burst out in frustration, "Mom, how can you go along with his nonsense? What kind of girl would touch her lover’s forehead in intimacy? Please think it through before speaking."
Madam Yin reprimanded, "Ah Yan! As a girl, you can’t speak so carelessly." She hesitated as she spoke, "Yuanfan is an honest child; he wouldn’t lie about this."
Honest my foot! Does he even know what honesty is? Ye Xinyan complained, "Mom, you’re so easily deceived. With which eye did you see his honesty? If he’s honest, then no one in the world is dishonest."
"But, Yuanfan did say that you... touched his forehead. That child wouldn’t lie." Madam Yin frowned, her expression filled with regret. Although they weren’t married yet, and it was a bit improper, Ah Yan and Yuanfan were not like other unmarried couples; they used to be husband and wife. Now that they were about to get back together, it could be excusable if it was true affection."
"I, I thought he had a fever, that’s all," Ye Xinyan tried to explain. But even her own defense sounded feeble.
"Oh dear, my daughter," Madam Yin sighed in relief and chided Ye Xinyan, "You don’t know how to give a full explanation. You scared your mother to death. I thought you were still holding a grudge against Yuanfan and hadn’t agreed to reconcile with him."
"I haven’t agreed to reconcile with him," Ye Xinyan said, somewhat dazed. She hadn’t said anything, had she? How did her mother come to believe that she had already agreed to Jiang Yifan?
"Nonsense! If you hadn’t agreed, why would you... touch that person’s forehead?" Madam Yin, thinking she understood her daughter, affectionately touched Ye Xinyan’s hair bun, "Alright, your mother knows you’re shy now, we won’t talk about it anymore. We’ll just wait to go through the formalities with the Jiang Family after we return to the capital."
"What formalities? I really thought he had a fever; that’s why I checked his forehead to see if it was hot." Doesn’t the feeling of being unable to justify oneself suck?
Madam Yin quickly reassured her, "Yes, yes, yes, your mother knows. Ah Yan, you were just concerned about Yuanfan, that’s why you were worried he might be sick. It was an involuntary act, not an intention to cross any boundaries."
