Chapter 134: Chapter 133 The Unfamiliar Noble Son
It wasn’t that Shopkeeper He was hesitant to enter, but the entrance of the private room was guarded by two old woman servants.
The private room had been booked by an unfamiliar affluent guest. Accompanying him were Young Master Liang from Clear Water County and two young ladies whose faces had not been seen, along with a group of maids and old woman servants. The food for the room at noon was also delivered by the old woman servants and the boys, without letting Great Crane House’s waiters enter the room.
This was the third private room Shopkeeper He had sent the milk cream cake to.
Shopkeeper He was aware of Young Master Liang’s fondness for the pastry shop’s sweet treats. Anyone who could bring Young Master Liang from the Liang family out to dine was certainly no ordinary household. It was beneficial to let these guests taste the milk cream cakes in order to promote their reputation. That was the initial intention behind Shopkeeper He’s gesture of sending in a very limited portion of the cake.
Shopkeeper He bowed with his hands clasped and said, "Elder Madams, my surname is He, and I am the manager of Great Crane House. I heard that your esteemed principal was looking for me; may I ask what for?"
The two old woman servants were neatly dressed, with straight postures and stern faces.
One of the old woman servants sized up Shopkeeper He and said, "Please wait a moment, Shopkeeper He, while I go in and report."
After a short while, the old woman servant came back out and said, "Our young master would like to ask Shopkeeper He a few questions. Please follow me inside."
Upon entering the private room, Shopkeeper He saw that it was divided by Great Crane House’s colored ink peony screens. The tables, chairs and dishes were all behind the screens, while there were two young masters sitting beside a small table outside of the screens.
The older young master appeared to be around twenty years old, of average build, with regular features. Dressed in a light blue long gown with a matching belt laced with silver silk, and a jade pendant hanging from his waist, he was smiling and chatting with the younger one.
The younger master, about twelve or thirteen, was smiling amiably at the one in the blue gown, showing closeness and admiration. Shopkeeper He recognized the young master, who was indeed Young Master Liang Siming from Clear Water County.
The old woman servant who led Shopkeeper He in bowed to the young masters and reported, "Eldest Son, the manager of Great Crane House, Shopkeeper He, has arrived."
The young master looked up, and Shopkeeper He quickly bowed and said, "I am the manager of Great Crane House. May I know what your instructions are, Young Master?"
"There’s no need for formalities, Shopkeeper He," the Eldest Son said, gesturing with his hand to dismiss the servant, and then continued speaking to Shopkeeper He. "The pastry that was just brought into the private room, they say it is called milk cream cake..." Upon hearing the words "milk cream cake," Liang Siming’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
The Eldest Son continued, "The waiter said that there was only the piece of milk cream cake that your restaurant offered as a complimentary treat, and no additional cakes were available for the guests to order. Why is that?"
Shopkeeper He quickly bowed and replied, "To reply to the Young Master, the Great Crane House had already offered cakes as part of our menu, which are indeed well-received in terms of flavor."
In the past, various cakes from the pastry shop were supplied to Great Crane House and there were quite a few guests who ordered them. Shopkeeper He remembered that this private room had ordered a portion of small cakes today.
Seeing the young master nod, he continued, "Today’s new delicacy called milk cream cake is exceptional in sweetness due to the addition of milk cream, a very rare and delicate ingredient. It’s difficult to preserve, so only enough for one cake was available, which is why we couldn’t offer it for sale."
The Eldest Son was still musing about what milk cream was while Young Master Liang eagerly asked, "Shopkeeper He, what exactly is this milk cream? Could it be that the milk cream cake also comes from the pastry shop next door?"
Shopkeeper He said with a smile, "Young Master Liang is indeed clever, the milk cream cake is indeed produced by the leisure snack shop. The cream is a fat obtained from cow’s milk, which makes it scarce."
The Eldest Son wasn’t fixated on the difficulty of obtaining milk cream, but was thinking of his sister’s obsession with the milk cream cake.
"Shopkeeper He, your restaurant offers complimentary pastries, naturally, so that customers will be happy to make purchases after tasting them. What I want to know is, how many milk cream cakes will your restaurant have tomorrow?"
Shopkeeper He was a bit taken aback, it seemed that this young master was indeed of high status, with even Young Master Liang from the Liang family just listening obediently. The young master was asking about the quantity of milk cream cakes for tomorrow. Was he planning to buy them all at once?
Shopkeeper He said apologetically with a laugh, "Young Master, due to the scarcity of milk cream, I cannot guarantee how many cakes can be made tomorrow. Including your private room, only three private rooms have had the chance to try the milk cream cake today. Guests from the other two rooms have reserved half a cake each. If you require any..."
Shopkeeper He carefully chose his words, "Since extracting milk cream is truly not easy, I genuinely cannot promise with certainty that there will be any available."
The young master clearly wasn’t satisfied with Shopkeeper He’s response, frowning, he said, "Isn’t the pastry shop that supplies the cakes affiliated with the Great Crane House? Shopkeeper He, you could urge the owner of the little shop to spend more time and effort making a few more."
Shopkeeper He humbled himself and ventured, "The owner of the snack shop consists of the Qi family’s grandfather and grandson, who are now working for a Sixth Master Rong. They aren’t usually dealing with the snack shop’s affairs. There is only an old woman servant from the Qi family overseeing the shop, and she likely can’t make such decisions."
What Shopkeeper He didn’t expect was his probe to be highly effective. As soon as the name "Sixth Master Rong" was mentioned, the superior look on the Eldest Son’s face disappeared immediately, replaced by an indecipherable contemplation.
