Chapter 99 - 99 Rejected by Shang Hexing
Chapter 99: Rejected by Shang Hexing Chapter 99: Rejected by Shang Hexing Xie Weiyue’s words might not carry a hidden meaning to others, but Wen Zhi understood clearly.
She was using a metaphor to remind her not to covet what wasn’t hers!
The atmosphere became somewhat delicate until Meng Fan suddenly spoke up, “This isn’t appropriate.”
With one sentence, he broke the current subtlety.
Meng Fan leaned back, looked up at Xie Weiyue with a half-joking tone, and said, “Don’t get me wrong; what I mean is that if Zhizhi invited you to play cards, she would definitely offer her spot willingly. But by hastening to remind her to give up the seat, it makes it seem as if our Zhizhi took your spot, sounding rather aggressive, which is quite inappropriate.”
Xie Weiyue’s expression stiffened for a moment before returning to normal as she smiled lightly and said, “I certainly didn’t mean that, Meng Fan, you shouldn’t mislead everyone with such comments.”
Xie Weiyue cared most about her reputation.
The image she maintained and her style of conduct had always been highly spoken of.
If Meng Fan unfairly labeled her with a few words, it would impact Xie Weiyue’s reputation externally.
“That’s true, but Xie Weiyue, with your magnanimity, if Zhizhi decides not to give up the seat to you, you surely wouldn’t mind, right?” Meng Fan asked with a smiling eye.
Wen Zhi had already planned to leave, but now that Meng Fan was supporting her, she quietly sat down and watched Xie Weiyue’s reaction.
Xie Weiyue was indeed a formidable person, managing her expressions well, maintaining her composure: “Of course not, playing cards should always be enjoyable.”
Anyone who heard this couldn’t help but praise Xie Weiyue for being reasonable and gracious.
The gentleman across understood the situation and stood up, smiling at Xie Weiyue, “Miss Xie, if you don’t mind, take my seat. Although I’ve lost quite a few chips, I think it’s just my bad luck, not the seat.”
His witty and humorous words lightened the solemn atmosphere.
Xie Weiyue picked up the gentleman’s words, “Mr. Lin is just unlucky, while I am lacking in skill; the seat doesn’t make a difference. Since Mr. Lin has offered, then I won’t be polite.”
The gentleman stood up and pulled out the seat, “Miss Xie, please.”
Thus, Xie Weiyue sat down across the table.
Her demeanor was elegant, her eyes smiling gracefully, emanating a confident presence that seemed to radiate light.
As Xie Weiyue touched the cards, she quipped, “I lack skills because I haven’t played much before, so don’t pick on the novice.”
Meng Fan cracked a smile, “At the card table, who cares if you are a novice or a veteran? It’s all about skill, winning gracefully and losing gracefully.”
Liang Yin remained detached, enjoying the drama with a casual attitude.
Wen Zhi pressed the dice roller button and while the dice spun, she turned her head to look at Shang Hexing; he was also looking at her, meeting her gaze and said, “I won’t leave, be at ease.”
Wen Zhi was taken aback.
That wasn’t what she wanted to ask.
The dice stopped, and at the same moment, Xie Weiyue’s kindly reminder came from across the table, “Wen Zhi, it’s your turn to draw cards.”
Wen Zhi responded affirmatively, turned her head quickly, scanned her hand, and as she hesitated between playing a seven of bamboo or a five of stripes, Shang Hexing’s voice came from beside her, “Play the five of stripes.”
Wen Zhi took his advice and played the five of stripes.
Xie Weiyue watched calmly across the table and subtly withdrew her gaze, as Liang Yin, noticing Xie Weiyue’s reaction, said teasingly, “Miss Xie seems too familiar, hardly seems like someone lacking in skill.”
Xie Weiyue smiled, “I learn quite fast.”
Liang Yin meaningfully, “Indeed, very fast.”
Wen Zhi changed two more cards, but this time the cards were somewhat complex, uncertain, she turned her head to ask Shang Hexing behind her, “Is this a call to win?”
Shang Hexing: “Yeah.”
He then reached out naturally touching her right hand and moved two cards aside, making space in the middle, saying, “Missing this card.”
Wen Zhi understood and nodded, “Mm, I got it.”
Whatever card is missing, that’s the one to aim for.
When it was Xie Weiyue’s turn to play a card, Wen Zhi hadn’t reacted yet, and Shang Hexing reminded her, “Peng, change the card.”
Liang Yin clicked his tongue, he had already drawn the card he wanted, but since Wen Zhi had called peng, he had to put the drawn card back.
Wen Zhi laid down two cards, then played another.
Just as Meng Fan was about to draw a card, Xie Weiyue laid down two cards, “Peng!”
Meng Fan withdrew his hand and touched his nose.
Xie Weiyue glanced at Wen Zhi, hesitated for two seconds, and played a card.
Liang Yin looked at Wen Zhi in a half-joking tone, “You’re not going to peng again, are you?”
Wen Zhi laid all her cards down, and Shang Hexing beside her announced, “Hu.”
Liang Yin: “…”
Meng Fan leaned over to look at the cards laid down in front of Wen Zhi, clicking his tongue twice, then turned his head to look at Xie Weiyue.
Xie Weiyue kept her composure very well, her face showing nothing but a smile, no trace of any minutia expression, even genuinely complimenting, “Wen Zhi, your card skills are really great. I seldom remember cards because I only recognize some of them, so I can’t keep track of them.”
Then, Xie Weiyue looked at Shang Hexing and implied politely, “Hexing, could you come over and help me with the cards?”
As soon as Xie Weiyue spoke, Meng Fan and Liang Yin both first looked not at Shang Hexing, but at Wen Zhi.
Wen Zhi kept her gaze down, able to feel several gazes falling on her.
Without any outward reaction, she thought Shang Hexing would probably not refuse Xie Weiyue’s request—he would turn around and come over, wouldn’t he?
Just as she was thinking this, she heard Shang Hexing call out, “Meng Fan.”
The named Meng Fan suddenly sat up straight, “Ah? Uncle?”
Shang Hexing’s eyes clearly showed a layer of weariness, and his voice was cool, not revealing any emotion, “You’re skilled at cards, give Ms. Xie some tips.”
Wen Zhi’s fingers, resting in front of her, suddenly curled up.
Meng Fan widened her eyes; she glanced at Xie Weiyue’s reaction, which was still very composed.
Meng Fan’s expression turned subtle as she stifled a laugh and said, “I’d be happy to teach, as long as Xie Weiyue herself is willing.”
Xie Weiyue immediately responded, “I’d be thrilled to receive tips from Meng Fan.”
Meng Fan was eagerly anticipatory, “Shuffle the cards, shuffle the cards.”
The four of them played a few more rounds, and soon it was nearly ten o’clock. Meng Fan was still very spirited, showing no signs of wanting to leave.
Until a phone call came, Meng Fan answered without checking the caller ID, “Hello?”
On the phone Huaishen’s voice came through: “Look at the time.”
Meng Fan’s mind was full of cards, she didn’t hear clearly: “What?”
Huaishen reminded her, “It’s ten o’clock.”
Now Meng Fan heard clearly, and also knew why this call had come—it was time for her to return to the mansion.
But now, Meng Fan was increasingly energized the more she played, and showed no intention of wanting to go back, “Still playing cards here, you go back first, don’t worry about me, I can find my way back.”
Huaishen: “I’m giving you three minutes, come downstairs.”
