Seeking Truth with a Sword -
Chapter 48 - 47: Eye Tremor
Chapter 48: Chapter 47: Eye Tremor
All eyes at the scene instantly converged on him.
Li Ang faced every curious, skeptical, or disdainful gaze with composure, unruffled.
"You are..."
Qiu Feng frowned slightly as she looked at Li Ang. Before Li Ang could reply, Zhai Yiming, beside her, stepped forward and said loudly, "This is Li Ang, a renowned doctor from Yizhou. Though he is young, in terms of medical skill, he is among the best in all of Jiangnan Road."
Zhai Yiming wore a proud expression, yet the surrounding exam candidates did not believe him outright, murmuring among themselves, "Hey, since when did Yizhou become famous for its doctors?"
"I did hear about a Fortune Doctor named Yu Miaoshui there who sells mung bean soup, claiming it cures all diseases."
"Mung bean soup that cures all diseases? Must be another scam to swindle money from the simple-minded."
Li Ang listened to the whispers around him, his eyes twitching involuntarily, his resentment towards Yu Miaoshui deepening. That fellow made a hefty profit for himself but completely ruined the reputation of Yizhou’s Xinglin beyond its borders, even implicating me.
Quacks are truly a menace, Li Ang thought, silently shaking his head and sighing to himself.
Before him, however, Qiu Feng’s eyes widened in surprise. "Are you the Li Ang who cured the eye diseases of over a hundred military horses at the Yizhou Pasture Supervision Office using pig eyeballs?"
"I am."
Li Ang nodded in astonishment. "Miss, have you heard of me?"
"Yes. Some time ago, my father and my second uncle mentioned that a novel and unusual medical case had occurred in Yizhou City."
Qiu Feng pursed her lips slightly, her gaze towards Li Ang subtly changing. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Just then, a slightly overweight student at the back of the crowd was heard murmuring, "No wonder. The Qiu family’s Er Lang used to be an assistant official to the Minister of the Ministry of Ministry, and the Ministry of Ministry is primarily responsible for managing Yu Country’s horse administration..."
Yu Country had always placed great emphasis on the breeding, storage, and treatment of large livestock like horses and cattle. The Ministry of Ministry, for example, employed four Veterinary Doctors and six hundred veterinarians and had previously compiled the veterinary textbook, "Si Mu Anji Collection," as a teaching guide. Pasture Supervisory Offices at every level also had varying numbers of veterinarians.
Since these individuals all held official status, their interactions were more frequent and proactive than those among private doctors. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising that the bizarre news of someone in Yizhou City using pig eyeball tissue fluid to treat eye inflammation in military horses quickly reached the ears of the Imperial Physician families in Chang’an.
Once assured that Li Ang wasn’t just an amateur trying to stir up trouble, Qiu Feng’s attitude softened somewhat. She asked, "Doctor Li, why did you stop me? Did I do something wrong?"
"No, no, not at all. I just wanted to observe the patient closely. May I take a look?"
Li Ang slightly raised his hands, indicating he meant no harm.
Qiu Feng glanced at the opulently dressed young girl in the crowd. After receiving a slight nod from her, Qiu Feng stepped aside, making space.
"Thank you."
Li Ang breathed a sigh of relief. Holding his breath to avoid inhaling the faintly sweet, medicinal incense emanating from the young girl, he quickly walked past and stood before Yong Hongzhong.
After the brief rest, Yong Hongzhong’s dizziness had slightly improved, but his brow remained deeply furrowed, and he looked somewhat nauseous.
Li Ang’s expression turned serious. He first performed a physical examination on Yong Hongzhong, then began his inquiries.
"Hmm... Brother Hongzhong, when did you start experiencing this frequent dizziness?"
"Have you had sudden tinnitus or hearing loss? No? Then have you sustained any head injuries, or experienced pain on one side of your head?"
"Have you had any ear bleeding before?"
"Tell me everything you’ve eaten in the past few days, including fruits and snacks."
Li Ang questioned him meticulously, showing no impatience despite Yong Hongzhong’s stammering. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Once the questioning was complete, he closed his eyes and pondered for a moment.
Symptoms appeared a month ago. The onset was sudden. He often felt nauseous and dizzy when getting up or going to bed each day. The dizziness usually lasted less than 60 seconds and was occasionally accompanied by vomiting. Afterward, he would feel light-headed with a sensation of floating...
Li Ang opened his eyes and smiled at the crowd. "Could two people come over and lend a hand? Please bring a softer set of bedding and help me clear this table."
"I’ll get the bedding," Zhai Yiming nodded and ran towards a side room.
Song Shaoyuan stepped forward and helped Li Ang clear the bowls and dishes from the table. He then asked curiously, "Risheng, what illness does Hongzhong have?"
"We’ll need to do a test to find out," Li Ang replied casually.
Yong Hongzhong’s old servant, who was standing nearby, immediately asked anxiously, "Young master, is this test dangerous?"
"It’s not dangerous. It just requires him to turn his head." Li Ang had Yong Hongzhong climb onto the table. "Brother Hongzhong, please sit on the table. Yes, right here."
By this time, more and more onlookers had gathered in the hall. Not only the candidates who had come to Chang’an for this year’s Academic Palace entrance exam but also some adults—clearly envoys and low-level officials passing through the hostel.
"I’ve brought the bedding."
Zhai Yiming came jogging over with the bedding. Li Ang had him spread it on the table and then asked the unrelated onlookers to step back.
He then stood directly in front of the table. Holding Yong Hongzhong’s head, he turned it forty-five degrees to the left. In a gentle tone, he said to Yong Hongzhong, "Brother Hongzhong, I’m going to lay you down on the table now. Don’t be nervous or afraid. If you get really scared, you can cry out."
Yong Hongzhong stuttered, "A-alright."
The surrounding crowd grew increasingly curious, perplexed, and even disdainful. The table was so low that jumping off it wouldn’t cause any harm. Moreover, with bedding spread on it, simply sitting down and then lying back shouldn’t be frightening enough to cause someone to cry out in alarm.
Qiu Feng also watched Li Ang’s actions with a slight frown, completely unable to discern his intentions.
"Three, two, one."
The instant the countdown finished, Li Ang immediately supported Yong Hongzhong’s head, guiding him to lie down naturally until his head extended just beyond the edge of the table, forming a 20-degree angle with its surface.
"UGH!"
Yong Hongzhong immediately groaned in discomfort. His eyeballs began to shake violently and dart around, a rather terrifying sight.
Li Ang asked calmly, "Brother Hongzhong, are you feeling dizzy now?"
Yong Hongzhong, flailing his arms as if drowning, cried out, "Yes, I am! I am!"
"Does it feel like the world is spinning?"
"It does!"
"That’s normal."
Li Ang slowly helped Yong Hongzhong sit up. "In the left head-hanging position, a vertical, upward, clockwise eye shaking occurs. It lasts for about 15 breaths (approximately thirty seconds), and the patient feels like the world is spinning, accompanied by significant fear."
"What... what’s happening?" Song Shaoyuan, standing nearby, was dumbfounded.
Qiu Feng’s eyes also widened, and she involuntarily asked, "His eyes... why were they darting all over the place just now?"
"Because that’s how medical science works."
Li Ang patted Yong Hongzhong’s shoulder cheerfully, letting him recover for a moment from the nausea and dizziness. Then he once again held Yong Hongzhong’s head—this time, tilting it to the right.
"D-Doctor, wait..."
Yong Hongzhong’s cry of alarm was cut short as Li Ang once again guided his body to lean backward.
This time, however, Yong Hongzhong didn’t experience the anticipated sensation of the world spinning.
"Hmm?"
Song Shaoyuan, Qiu Feng, and the others were completely bewildered. Why did Yong Hongzhong’s eyes stop their erratic movements this time, simply because his head was turned in a different direction?
Li Ang smiled and slowly helped Yong Hongzhong sit up. "Congratulations, Brother Hongzhong. This illness of yours... it can be treated."
