Chapter 179: Questioning (1) [Christian POV]

"Sir! Welcome back. I’m glad to see you’re feeling better," Blake greeted as I stepped into his office.

I simply nodded, suppressing the desire to cough. While I was feeling better than the last couple of days, my body was still aching, and I constantly had to fight the lingering weakness.

"Give me an update on the last few days. I want to know what I missed," I said, taking a seat across from him.

"Right away. I’ll begin with the largest projects first. Project X is still a while away...."

Blake spent the next hour going through everything that had happened while I was sick in bed. One of his special skills was just this: the ability to identify the important matters and summarize them for me.

He’s helped me out on more than one occasion with this helpful ability of his. Not a single extra word was spoken, clearly painting a picture of what had happened.

After he finished his report, he looked at me with slight confusion in his eyes.

"Was there anything else?" he asked.

I paused for a moment before looking up at him. "How has she been?"

Blake’s eyes widened before a knowing smile crept up on his face.

"She has been doing well, Sir. Her mood has been getting better, and she’s been coming in to work on time," he said calmly.

"What about food? Has she been eating well?"

I thought about the food I had picked out for her yesterday. It was from a new restaurant that just recently opened up. The reviews were very good, and it all looked like food she would enjoy.

I wish I could have seen her cute chipmunk cheeks as she was eating. I love seeing her happy dance when she eats something she enjoys.

Blake smiled, "Let’s just say that the plates were completely clean when I came to clean up after lunch. I’m certain she enjoyed it."

I nodded, allowing my smile to grow. It was good to hear that she’s been eating well.

"Does she still..."

I hesitated.

Do I really want to know?

Unfortunately, Blake had another ability, and that was to read minds.

"Yes, she still leaves the company each day with Mr. Christaphori," he replied, more calmly this time.

I felt my chest tighten. The news didn’t surprise me, but it still stung.

"I see," I replied simply. "What about the new hire? The woman I sent over to interview a few days ago. How is she settling in?"

Blake nodded, "She’s doing well. I placed her into the HR department based on the brief assessment of skills. The manager in her department is very pleased with her work ethic."

"Good. Could you send her over to my office? I have a few things to ask her," I said, getting up from the chair.

"Sure thing. I’ll send her right over."

-

After leaving Blake’s office, I made my way up to my office. My eyes automatically traveled to the small door that led to the office next door.

Should I go say hello?

It’s been so long since we’ve last spoken...

I took a step forward, but my fear and nervousness prevented me from moving further.

What if I push her even further away? I don’t have any evidence yet...

Releasing a deep sigh, I turned and walked over to my desk. Since the night I went to the shipyard, I’ve been mulling over how to get myself into the next event. All I knew was that it was next week and that it would most likely be very controlled and guarded.

A few minutes later, I heard a knock on my door.

"Sir, I’ve brought Ms. Wess," Blake called out from the other side of the door.

"Come in!" I replied as I stood up from my chair.

Blake opened the door and let Abigail in. He nodded at me and walked out, closing the door behind him.

"How are you doing, Abigail? Do you find working here satisfactory?" I asked, motioning for her to come and take a seat on one of the sofas.

Her eyes lit up, "It’s wonderful! I truly love coming into work each day, and the pay...is more than I could ever dream of. Thank you so much for this opportunity!"

She bowed her head slightly, hiding the tears in her eyes. I could tell that every word she said truly came from the bottom of her heart.

"That’s great, I’m glad things are working out for you," I smiled and sat down on the sofa across from her. "Now, I called you here to ask for another favor. I understand that you don’t like talking about your previous employment at the Moresi auction house, but I need your help."

Her smile stiffened, but she still nodded. "Sure. I’ll tell you everything I know," she said softly.

"I did a little bit of investigating and I heard that there’s a secret auction scheduled for next week. It’s not posted anywhere and if it wasn’t for hearing it out of a higher up’s mouth myself, I wouldn’t believe it. Were there events like this often?"

She thought about it and nodded. "I know of the events you’re speaking of. I always found it strange that they never publicized them and even told us to pretend they never happened. Leadership always told us that they were simply VIP events."

"I wouldn’t say they happened often. Maybe once every other month? I only ever worked two of those events," she added after a brief pause.

I nodded. "I see. Is there anything else you could tell me about the events? Dress codes, what time or day of the week they were held, anything at all?"

If I wanted to infiltrate the event, I had to know as much as possible.

"Sure. So the first thing was that they were always held on a Thursday evening. Doors opened at nine, and the event only started after eleven. It was always a masquerade theme. Everyone who attended wore a mask large enough to cover all of their facial features."

My eyes darkened.

Of course, these sick fucks would cover their face. Too scared to be noticed at a human auction!

I’ll rip those masks off of each and every one of you!

"The invitations were also slightly different. Under normal light, they looked exactly like the typical auction house invitation. But under a special light, the gold lettering turned black. It’s how we could tell if the invitation was forged or not," she continued.

"Interesting," I said, thinking aloud. A special invitation would make sense since an event like this could be very dangerous if the wrong kind of people accidentally infiltrated.

Someone like me.
