Chapter 173: Investigation at the Port (2) [Christian POV]
I continued to watch them from a close distance, listening to them banter. My real goal was to wait until the next shipment arrived, the one they said was ’important’.
Suddenly, a number of footsteps came running over.
"Boss, the man is still here. His car is still in the parking lot, but we couldn’t find him during our sweep."
Karl frowned. His eyes squinted as he looked around.
"Quickly, do a thorough sweep of the area. Something is telling me this man is snooping around here," he ordered as he looked around the area.
Shit. They’re going to find me if they look over here.
I was impressed with Karl’s instincts. It was no wonder that he’s been able to escape from so many rounds of prosecution; his innate instincts to detect danger were too good.
"Yes, sir!" The armed men shouted before scattering once more.
Observing their movements, I waited until one of the men came my way to sweep through the boxes before darting behind another box.
"Hmm? Who’s there?" the armed guard shouted, looking in my direction.
I crouched behind the box and held my breath, hoping that the rain would cover my sounds. The guard took a few steps towards where I was hiding.
My hand was already gripping the handle of my pistol, ready to shoot if I was discovered.
The bright light from the guard’s flashlight passed over my head.
"Hmm, must’ve seen wrongly," he said, and walked away.
I let out a sigh of relief but remained vigilant. There was no choice, I had to get out of here. Based on what I could tell with Karl, he wouldn’t stop searching until they found me. Thankfully, I was able to gather enough information tonight to continue my search.
If everything I heard remained accurate, I had a good chance to infiltrate the auction house next week during their ’special’ auction.
As soon as the guard turned the corner, I ran out from behind the box, running straight for the open shipping container opposite me. My goal now was to simply make it out of this shipyard alive.
Luckily, all of the guards split up in different directions. This allowed me to only have to pay attention to the closest ones as I moved from cover to cover, until I reached the long corridor between shipping containers.
If they spot me now, there’s nowhere to hide.
The shipping containers were stacked too high for me to attempt to climb up, and from what I could see, none of them were open. This meant that it would only take one look for the guard to spot me, and there would be nowhere for me to run to.
I waited at the entrance of the long stretch, calculating when the best time for me to make a run would be.
Three, two ....one...now!
The closest guard finally turned the corner, giving me a small window of time to sprint down the corridor as fast as I could.
I ran as fast as I could. The rain was already seeping through my jacket, soaking my shirt to match the rest of my body, but I didn’t care. The only thing on my mind was to keep running as fast as I could so that by the time they spotted me, I would already be a good distance away.
The rain intensified, pelting across my face as I continued to run. The entire time, my hand was resting on the pistol in my pocket, ready to shoot the moment the need arose.
I made it about halfway down the long corridor when the light from a flashlight brushed over me.
"Hey, you! Stop right there!" A guard shouted.
After weighing my options in my head, I came to a halt and turned to face the direction of the flashlight.
The guard with the flashlight walked over slowly, allowing the other guards to catch up. A few minutes later, I had multiple guns pointed at me.
"Don’t move or we’ll shoot!" he shouted.
I stayed still, observing them closely. My hand was still inside my pocket, gripping my pistol.
The guard who spotted me walked over slowly. "Why are you here? Don’t you know this place is off limits?"
"I...I’m only here to check on my shipment. I’m not here to cause trouble," I said, faking a panicked expression.
He walked over slowly, stopping only when he was within arm’s length of me.
"Oh yeah? Do you have any proof?" he asked, looking at me fiercely.
I quickly fished out the shipping documents from my pocket, hoping that they would be enough to convince him.
He grabbed the documents out of my hands, reading them thoroughly.
"Container 3210-B," he shouted.
All but one other guard immediately scattered.
"Let’s see if you’re telling the truth. If this container isn’t in the vicinity, I’m going to have no choice but to put a bullet through your head," he said with a sadistic tone.
His eyes had a look of excitement. He wanted to shoot; there was no doubt about it.
My heart began to beat wildly in my chest. I had no idea where this shipping container was. It could easily be on the opposite side of the port for all I knew.
If it’s not nearby, do I feign ignorance? Say I got lost?
Something told me that he wouldn’t listen to any excuses. If the container wasn’t nearby, then I was done for.
I could try shooting my way out of it, but my one pistol against multiple armed men with automatic rifles wasn’t the best odds of success. Plus, there could be more than just this group of guards lurking in the area.
Every moment that passed felt like a lifetime. If they didn’t come back soon, it meant that the shipping container wasn’t nearby.
The guard lifted his hand to take a look at his watch.
"It seems like your container isn’t near here. Tell me, where exactly was it?"
I could feel the bloodlust emanating from him. I was mere seconds away from being shot.
Looks like I’ll have to try my luck at a shootout.
Just as I was about to pull my pistol out of my pocket, one of the guards came running back.
"I found it. Container 3210-B is right on the other side of these containers," the man said, quickly.
A look of surprise flashed through the guard’s eyes. "Are you certain?"
"Yes, sir. I verified it a few times. All of the tags have it clearly marked."
He finally turned to face me. "Looks like you haven’t been lying. Today’s your lucky day. Now get the fuck out of here before I change my mind!"
I quickly nodded and ran. There was no reason for me to stay and tempt fate. The look in the man’s eyes told me everything I needed to know. These people weren’t normal; they enjoyed killing.
