Chapter 72: Please Leave

The three Marrowmen frowned. When they saw Abel’s visage, they felt like the youth was familiar somehow, but they couldn’t quite put a finger on it.

Seeing their expressions of puzzlement, Abel’s eyes turned colder. "I see." He put the top hat back on and took a step forward.

"I must admit, I am feeling quite angry." He took another step forward with his head lowered. The brim of his hat cast a shadow on his face, hiding his wrathful expression.

"You ruined a young man’s life. You..." His voice trailed off and he added inwardly.

You killed him!

"And yet, you don’t remember his face, eh?" Now Abel was only standing a few feet away from the group.

He cast his gaze towards the teenage girl. She seemed to be about his age. Seeing her puffy eyes and the tears streaming down her face, Abel felt even more rage bubble up inside him.

Seeing her clothes, he involuntarily heaved a sigh of relief.

Thankfully these guys haven’t done anything to her yet, he thought.

He put on a gentle smile and spoke to the girl, "Miss, you may leave."

"Huh?" The blond man, Reggie, scoffed at that comment. His eyes flashed with ridicule as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world.

He walked up to Abel, his expression threatening. "Oi, wanker! Didn’t I tell you to fuck off?"

Despite the man standing right before him, Abel wasn’t phased. But somehow, this caused Reggie to be even angrier.

He poked Abel in the chest with his finger and growled, "Think you’re some bleedin’ hero, do ya? That what you figured, wanderin’ down this alley like some savior boy?."

The following moment, the man retrieved a pocket knife and pointed the sharp blade at Abel. His lips curled into a taunting grin. "See this, lad? You’ve any idea how many mugs I’ve carved with it, eh?"

Abel turned his attention to the pocket knife, then back at the man. "Someone might get hurt."

Reggie’s grin turned wider. "And that someone’s gonna be you! I’ll teach you a proper fuckin’ lesson, lad. Show you what happens when you cross a Marro—"

Crack!

In the blink of an eye, Abel caught the man’s wrist and twisted it viciously.

Before Reggie even had the chance to scream, Abel disarmed him and swept him off his feet, viciously throwing him to the ground.

Reggie’s skull knocked against the dirty cobblestoned alley and he immediately lost consciousness.

Meanwhile, Adam held onto the man’s pocket knife and stared at him with disappointment. "Reggie Haines, I told you someone might get hurt."

He then turned to the rest of the people. All of them had dumbfounded expressions on their faces. Then, he looked at the girl and said, "Miss, please leave. You won’t like what happens next."

"Y-Yes!" The girl flinched when Abel spoke to her.

She then fearfully looked at the two other men who were surrounding her and was shocked to notice that they were actually fearful of Abel.

The girl knew it was the perfect time to leave, thus she scuttled away from the place. On her way out of the alley, her gaze was drawn to the bag of groceries that now lay on the ground.

She couldn’t help but feel heartbroken by the wastage. The bag had fallen earlier when Reggie had confronted Abel. Now, the food lay on the cobblestones. Dirty.

"Wait," Abel called out to her.

The girl flinched again, turning towards the youth, her eyes flashing with apprehension. She then saw the blond gentleman take out his leather wallet and draw a 1 sterling banknote from it.

"For your groceries," he said apologetically.

The teenager’s eyes widened. 1 sterling was more than her father’s weekly wage as a manual laborer. It could be considered a small fortune to her and her family.

Yet, Abel was now giving it to her so casually.

"Don’t hesitate." Abel urged. "You need it more than I do. Now, please leave."

But what he actually wanted to say was, Don’t hesitate. I will be reimbursed for this later on. So, technically this is the Trust’s money. Now, please leave.

The girl grasped the banknote with trembling hands. She cast one final gaze at the blond young man and whispered, "Thank you, sir..."

With that, she scurried out of the alley.

Abel then turned his attention towards the two other Marrowmen, who were still shocked by how easily he had dealt with Reggie earlier.

"Mick Donlan," he said, gazing at the one on the left. Then he shifted his gaze to the one on the right. "And Ned Stokes."

"Who!" Mick panicked. "Who the hell are you?! How do you know us?!"

Abel looked at him with a faint smile, but his blue eyes flashed with anger. "On the night of 7th July, you three assaulted a young man who was on his way to the general post office.

"You took him to an alley, just like this one, and continued to beat him despite his pleas for mercy. You did not stop, no. You had fun. A lot of fun, didn’t you?"

Ned Stokes pointed his trembling finger at Abel, his eyes flashing with realization. "It’s you! You are that boy!"

Abel removed his frock coat, folded it, and placed it on the wooden crate beside him. He also placed his top hat there.

Then, as he began folding the sleeves of his linen shirt, the smile on his lips deepened. "Yes, it is me. But I am no longer that boy."

"You! What the hell do you want?!" Mick Donlan roared angrily. "If you know our names, then you bloody well know who we answer to! You daft, or do you not fear the Marrowmen?"

"Oh, I won’t lie, I do fear the Marrowmen." Abel drew a pair of leather gloves from his waistcoat pocket and slipped them on.

"But to be more precise, I fear what I might do to them."

"This bastard!" Ned gritted his teeth. He turned to Mick and nodded. "This time let’s give him a lesson he won’t walk away from, eh?"

"Aye." Mick Dolan nodded, his eyes flashing with a crazed glint. "Let’s see how pretty he looks after."

The next moment, the two of them retrieved their pocket knives and pounced at him.

Abel took a deep breath as his pupils constricted. He utilized spirit energy to augment his senses, thus increasing his observational capabilities.

Then, he bolted towards them.

It was time for some payback!
