Chapter 748: Chapter 748: Surviving the Calamity (1)
When Gavin Campbell arrived home, it was already 11 p.m. Bryan Hawkins was there with Carolline Ruiz, along with Andy Aguirre and Megan Clifton. The four of them had been keeping Mr. and Mrs. Campbell company while they waited. Mrs. Campbell had heated the food in the pot twice before Gavin finally returned.
His eyes were bloodshot, and his beard unkempt, making him look as though he had gone through some ordeal.
Seeing their son return, even though it had only been a few months, felt like an incredibly long time for the Campbells. As soon as Mrs. Campbell saw her son, she lunged towards him and hugged him, crying out loud.
Gavin, a grown man, held his mother tightly and also cried. Mr. Campbell, standing by, had his eyes wet with tears. Everyone watched the heart-wrenching scene with tears in their eyes.
No one spoke, no matter how long the mother and son embraced.
Eventually, Mr. Campbell couldn’t hold back anymore. "Have you eaten? Your mother made a lot of your favorite dishes. Go and have some. How can you eat the food on the plane?"
"Dad–" Gavin nodded, noticing his father’s graying temples, which seemed even whiter than when he had left a few months ago.
"Come on, let’s eat. Andy, Carolline, and the others are here. They’ve been keeping us company and waiting for you to come back." Mr. Campbell reminded Gavin that his colleagues were there, and their current behavior might make them the laughingstock.
Gavin turned around and saw Andy and the others. He nodded to them, and Andy spoke up, "Gavin, it’s good that you’re back. Take a few days off and we’ll catch up at work. Meanwhile, spend some quality time with your parents."
"Yeah, Andy, Carolline, thank you for keeping my parents company while I was away," said Gavin, nodding.
Thinking of the events that had occurred during his time away, he felt a lingering fear. He thought it would be just like his previous medical support trips, and his year would pass smoothly. But instead, such an incident had occurred.
In the past, he would sit at home, watching international news about wars, riots, and terrorist attacks in distant places, never feeling the proximity of life and death.
This time, he experienced firsthand how close death could be. Just half an hour after those people had left him, a riot broke out not far from where they were, and everyone who went there perished.
Although the surviving members were immediately evacuated to safety, they spent three hours waiting in terror, knowing that death could come to them at any moment.
No one could understand that feeling unless they had been through it themselves.
During those three hours, he thought a lot. Among the memories of his lifetime, the thoughts of his parents were the most prominent. Being the only son in the family, he had never given his parents any peace of mind. He was unmarried and without children; if he had died in a foreign country, he couldn’t imagine how his parents would have coped with the loss.
It would undoubtedly be unbearable for them. The pain of white-haired parents sending off their black-haired children could only be understood by those who had experienced it.
At that time, he truly regretted his choices. If he could live life again, he would not insist on finding love. Instead, he would heed his parents’ advice, get married through an arranged match, and have children. Even if life was mundane, at least he would fulfill his parents’ wishes as their son.
Thankfully, he was back, and he was genuinely grateful to be home.
For the rest of his days, he would stay by his parents’ side and be filial to them.
