Chapter 559: Chapter 559: Evil Begets Evil (5)
She couldn’t read, but Jane Auclair told her that the netizens cursed them with nasty words.
Cole Duncan was so busy every day, leaving before seven in the morning, and not coming back until after midnight. Even so, his brows were still locked in a frown every day, never relaxing.
Jane Auclair rarely visited the Duncan Family nowadays. She and Joanna Auclair were struggling themselves, so there was naturally no time to attend to Cole’s mother. Cole’s mother couldn’t find anyone to talk to; she didn’t deign to talk to servants, but the only person she could talk to, her son, refused to pay attention to her.
One day, she personally cooked Chicken Soup, waiting for Cole Duncan to return.
Today, Cole Duncan returned relatively early, but it was already ten o’clock. Seeing his mother sitting in the dining room, he lowered his head and pushed his wheelchair into his bedroom, already quite proficient with the chair.
"Cole—" his mother ran over, no longer with her previous domineering manner, but instead looking at a loss. She had been forced to stay at home for two days, and her life was not good either.
"If you have something to say, say it. If not, I want to go back to my room to rest." Cole Duncan felt extremely exhausted - a kind of exhaustion he had never experienced before. He used to have confidence in his ability, but now he realized how important a person’s reputation was.
In the past, everyone was used to playing the game and had nothing to say about each other’s actions. However, now he, Cole Duncan, was the only one being singled out and attacked like this. Naturally, everyone avoided him, and would not dare to have any contact with him, let alone do business with him. If they were careless, they would be accused by netizens of doing business with a beast. What kind of business is that?
The development speed of the internet was astonishing, and so was the power of netizens. Cole Duncan was the best example. Contracts that had not been signed were naturally canceled. Those that had been signed, rather than continue to cooperate with Cole Duncan, companies preferred to pay the penalty for breach of contract. Some even refused to pay the compensation, arguing that the ruined reputation of the Duncan Family was to be blamed, not them breaking contract.
Cole Duncan had never felt so defeated before.
He always thought that obeying his mother’s words was being filial to her. So, he really listened to his mother on everything. When she asked him to have a grandchild for the Duncan Family, he went out to find a woman. He didn’t take into consideration Daisy Willow and Elena Duncan’s feelings; he just wanted to make his mother happy. But now he realized what kind of disaster his misguided filial piety had brought him.
He had lost his family, and now his career was on the brink of crisis.
"Cole, are you mad at your mom too?" Before his mother could finish speaking, her tears started to flow.
Appealing for sympathy and playing the victim was her consistent tactic. In the past, when she bullied Daisy Willow too much, she would use this tactic to prevent her son from blaming her. It had always worked.
But this time, she knew it wouldn’t work. Yet, the heartache was real, and so were the tears.
This time she genuinely felt regret, never having experienced such regret before, not realizing her actions would bring on countless consequences.
"Mom, I’ve always wanted to ask you, am I your son, or your puppet? Just because you are my mother, now that I’ve lost everything because of you, do I not even have the right to be angry?" Cole Duncan looked up at his mother, feeling chilled to the bone for the first time.
He had heard of mothers and sons falling out, of father-son bonds severed, but he had never thought that such things could happen among close relatives with blood ties.
So, the fact that Daisy Willow had won his heart was precisely because she would unconditionally obey him and be filial to his mother. This made him very satisfied. Of course, he truly loved her.
