Chapter 472: Chapter 472: She is My Wife (8)
There were many guests at the party, some of whom Carolline Ruiz knew, and some she didn’t. William Hawkins arrived with Sophie Carlson, as did Edo Holt, whom Carolline Ruiz recognized from the time William had brought him to help her earlier.
She also noticed Bernard Taylor, who was sitting with the group from the Second Hospital and was as conspicuous as always. Avery Graham was there too, but she had accompanied a manager.
Perhaps by coincidence, Avery Graham and the manager were sitting not far from the group from the Second Hospital. Nelson Castillo greeted Avery, but Bernard didn’t even glance at her.
Avery introduced Kent Auclair to Nelson, announcing that Kent would play host over the weekend as a gesture of thanks for the group’s past kindness towards her.
Nelson, always one to take advantage of a good deal, responded, "Well, then, thank you, Mr. Kent."
"No need to thank me; all of Avery’s friends are my friends," Kent replied humbly. In Avery’s presence, he casually slid an arm around her waist, making his claim to her clear.
From what he’d heard from Avery’s cousin, many had pursued her sister in the past, so he naturally assumed that these colleagues were those past suitors.
"Well said, Mr. Kent. You’re a straight shooter." Nelson laughed heartily. Honestly, he didn’t think much of the man, but he kept his thoughts to himself. He couldn’t fathom Avery’s poor taste in company.
"Bernard, Avery is hosting a dinner this weekend. You should come," Nelson said, eager to wrap up the conversation with Kent.
Only then did Bernard glance towards Avery and Kent. "I am busy, sorry."
His voice was as cold as ice, his demeanor distant. The words were directed at Kent, who was taken aback. The man was stunning, unlike anyone Kent had imagined before. No sooner had he recovered from the surprise when he was taken aback again by Bernard’s icy demeanor.
He had not anticipated such coldness from such a remarkably handsome man. This was the stuff of comic book heroes and novel protagonists, not real life. He wasn’t alone in his confusion; even he—an adult man—was captivated.
After speaking, Bernard turned around, not even sparing an extra glance at Avery.
Avery didn’t seem to mind and continued chatting with Kent. The tension was only briefly awkward, thanks to Avery’s knack for smoothing things over. Nelson couldn’t figure out the sudden change in their dynamic, but he didn’t press the matter.
Meanwhile, Nancy Sallow had arrived with Jacob Taylor. She noticed her son Bernard’s exchange with Avery. Seeing her son’s indifference towards her, she finally felt relieved.
Just as Avery had told her, she had found a boyfriend. It seemed Avery genuinely no longer harbored feelings for her son. Nancy privately thought Avery daft for overlooking her son, yet she was simultaneously relieved.
The feeling was paradoxical—Nancy could hardly put it into words.
"The party is about to start. We’ll go and greet Bernard later," Bryan Hawkins said, noticing his friend. Seeing where Carolline’s gaze fell, he realized she was looking their way too and so suggested this.
"Okay," Carolline nodded.
"I think Bernard will likely change his career path soon," Bryan suddenly remarked, sharing a private detail about his friend. As a child, Bernard despised the smell of disinfectant and had declared he hated the idea of being a doctor. "The smell of it day in and day out... He’d surely lose his appetite."
