Chapter 1025: 021 Birth certificate along with it for you_6
"Avery is indeed competent, and my judgment has always been good," Bernard Taylor said with a smile, praising Avery Graham for a while and also taking the chance to compliment himself.
"That’s true," Mr. Graham agreed wholeheartedly.
The three of them entered the house, where Mrs. Graham had already prepared the tea. Upon seeing Bernard Taylor, she didn’t wait for Avery to introduce him, "Bernard’s here? Come in and have some tea. We don’t have any fancy tea at your uncle and auntie’s place, so you’ll just have to make do."
"Auntie, hello," Bernard greeted Mrs. Graham first, then obediently walked over, picked up the cup of tea in front of him, took a sniff, and exclaimed, "The tea smells wonderful."
"You child, you’re so good with words. Sit down, sit down. Dinner will be ready soon," Mrs. Graham laughed a bit sheepishly. After rummaging around the house for half a day, she had found a stash of flower tea brought back on a whim because it indeed smelled wonderful, and she had specially made a cup just for Bernard.
Since Avery had already asked Bernard before, and he had mentioned he wanted to enjoy a warm and simple meal of home-cooked dishes, Mrs. Graham didn’t bother cooking anything fancy and stuck to her usual specialties.
Since Giselle Browman wasn’t coming back, the four of them quickly sat down to eat.
Bernard had bought twenty bottles of fine white liquor, and Mr. Graham happily opened a bottle of Maotai. Mrs. Graham initially wanted to stop him, only to see Mr. Graham putting on an appeasing face, "Having our future son-in-law over, of course, we need to have a good drink. Just one bottle, I’m not greedy for more."
"How much does one bottle cost? You’re going to drink it all?" Mrs. Graham gave Mr. Graham a look, but ultimately didn’t protest. She just felt it was a waste for Bernard to buy such expensive wine for Mr. Graham to drink.
He would have been just fine with ordinary white liquor. And Avery, she didn’t even try to stop Bernard when he was buying it.
Avery watched helplessly as her mother relayed her complaints through her gaze, to which she responded with a look of helpless resignation, meaning she had indeed tried to stop him, but to no avail.
"Auntie, it’s okay. If uncle loves to drink, there’s plenty more," Bernard felt it wasn’t a big deal. This bottle was just a few hundred, a better one a few thousand maybe, but none could compare to the collection stashed away in his father’s liquor cabinet.
"Bernard, I know you’re very good at earning money, but living life calls for frugality if you want it to last, right? Who can guarantee..." Mrs. Graham was about to dole out some well-meaning advice when she was sharply cut off by Mr. Graham, "What are you even saying? We’re so happy today; don’t bring those lectures you usually give me into this."
"Uh..." Mrs. Graham was startled. The old man didn’t usually exert such patriarchal authority, so was he just in a mood today? However, she ultimately didn’t counter his words.
Avery chuckled. Her mother was usually quite formidable, but when her dad really got going, her mother would definitely take a more subdued, ladylike posture. See, she obediently settled down, right?
Bernard also laughed, enjoying a dinner of home-cooked meals that was quite cozy and harmonious.
After dinner, the bottle of liquor wasn’t even finished. They were using small cups and taking very small sips, which was the best way to savor good wine like this.
After dinner, Avery went to the kitchen with her mother to wash the dishes, while Bernard stayed in the living room with Mr. Graham, continuing to drink the unfinished wine and chatting.
This kind of treatment never happened when Michael Auclair came over. After meals, Michael was eager to chat with Mr. Graham or play chess, but Mr. Graham always found an excuse to decline.
Mrs. Graham realized back then that Mr. Graham was resistant to Michael, even worried that after meeting each other’s parents they might rush into marriage. At that time, the thought of Avery finally getting married was quite pleasing to her heart, but what she didn’t expect was the turn of events with Michael, which Mr. Graham seemed to find unsurprising.
It was only later that Mr. Graham explained to Mrs. Graham why he didn’t like people like Michael. It wasn’t complicated; Michael was indeed capable, not from G City but managing to make something of himself in such a big city, clearly showing he had certain abilities and shrewdness. Without commenting on whether that shrewdness was good or bad, it undoubtedly wasn’t something their simple and straightforward Avery could contend with.
