Chapter 416: Danger on the Highway
Chapter 416: Chapter 416: Danger on the Highway
Although Jacob Garcia’s words just now were not pleasant, they were the harsh truth.
She also knew that the gap between their family backgrounds was too big!
Amelia Garcia looked at her best friend in surprise, "So, did you back off because you felt inferior after knowing his status?"
"Maybe... Someone with his background has surely met countless girls better than me. I think he’s probably already married."
Amelia Garcia pondered for a moment and nodded unconsciously, "Okay, I’ll try to find out for you when I get a chance."
"Don’t, I’ve already made a fool of myself in front of him!" Snow was anxious.
"Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing." Her best friend had helped her so many times, and now was finally a chance to repay her; Amelia Garcia was very proactive, sincerely hoping the two could work out.
She was too exhausted lately and quickly drifted into a doze after sitting silently in the car.
Snow knew she had been working hard recently, so she told her to recline the seat and take a nap.
She agreed, adjusted the seat angle, just found a comfortable position and closed her eyes, when suddenly the car made an emergency stop!
Both of them lurched forward violently, still in shock.
"What happened?"
"I don’t know!" Snow’s heart was pounding, not yet recovered, but immediately turned on the hazard lights to warn the car behind.
Fortunately, it was a tunnel and the speed wasn’t fast; the car behind also stopped.
Before they could figure out what was happening, someone shouted from the pedestrian walkway on both sides of the tunnel, "There’s an accident up ahead! It’s hazardous materials! Reverse quickly! Get back! The toxic smoke is spreading! Get out of here!"
Snow couldn’t hear clearly inside the car, so she rolled down the window, intending to ask what was going on up front, when she noticed a pungent smell and quickly covered her nose and mouth.
Amelia Garcia woke up and, remembering news reports she’d seen before, guessed: "There must be an accident up ahead, probably a semi-trailer carrying hazardous goods. Quick! Get out of the car and leave the tunnel!"
The cars behind, unaware of the situation, were still moving forward; reversing was impossible now. They could only abandon the car and leave on foot.
But the smoke spread quickly, visibility began to decrease, and the pungent smell grew stronger. Both were getting a bit flustered.
"Amelia, this smell is making me feel terrible, we won’t die here today, right?" Snow opened the car door, already panicking as she spoke.
Amelia Garcia was panicking too.
She had said long ago that after becoming a mother, she became especially afraid of dying, getting nervous even at minor dangers, fearing accidents, fearing her children would become orphans.
But now, no matter how scared she was, she had to calm down.
"Snow, talk less! Are there any wet wipes or tissues in the car?"
"Yes, yes! We have them!"
Amelia Garcia found a bottle of mineral water, unscrewed the cap, wetted the wipes Snow handed over a bit more, and quickly handed them back to her, "Quick! Cover your nose and mouth!"
She did the same and, closing the car door, quickly huddled with Snow and followed the crowd towards the tunnel exit.
The smoke spread rapidly, visibility in the tunnel decreased further, and the crowd was in chaos, making their "escape" not very smooth.
On the way, she saw children crying, adults crying for help. Thinking of her own kids, she felt compassion and rushed forward to help.
"Here, cover the child’s nose and mouth with the wet wipes! It will help inhale less smoke."
"Thank you, thank you..." The mother was grateful to tears, taking the wipes to cover her child’s mouth, while Amelia Garcia helped her pick up the child.
Snow saw this, quickly split two more wipes for her but, holding the child, she didn’t have a free hand. In haste, she instructed, "You cover yourself, don’t worry about me!"
The tunnel wasn’t very long, she quickened her pace, holding her breath as much as possible, only changing breath when really necessary.
As they neared the tunnel exit, the sound of police sirens and the glare of flashlights came from outside.
The crowd realized that the police had arrived and sighed in relief.
"Get out quickly! Leave the tunnel without worrying about the car or bringing luggage! Get yourselves out first!" The police were rushing towards the danger as people fled to save their lives.
Holding her breath, Amelia Garcia felt increasingly dizzy, but thankfully the air started to circulate, and the light was brighter, indicating they were close to the tunnel mouth.
"Amelia! Amelia, how are you? Are you okay?" Having finally escaped the danger, Amelia Garcia’s legs gave out as she put the child down, collapsing onto the ground, Snow worried she was poisoned, calling repeatedly.
The mother carrying the child was profoundly grateful, but Amelia couldn’t speak, just waved her hand to signal the mom to keep moving.
With a crowd at the tunnel mouth, blocking the exit would impede others escaping, and the smell was still bad there, so Snow had to pull Amelia up and support her for another hundred meters or so.
They finally reached a relatively open area.
Amelia Garcia started to recuperate, comforting Snow: "Relax, I’m okay... just a bit dizzy, and my throat’s uncomfortable."
Snow had her sit down, looked around, and then went to borrow some water.
"It’s been drunk by others, but there’s no choice, just rinse your mouth."
"Okay..."
Snow straightened up, watching more people stream out of the tunnel, with some already vomiting by the roadside from inhaling too much toxic smoke.
She felt panicked, thinking that it surely wouldn’t end soon, and with the car stuck, she took out her phone to make a call.
"I’ll have someone pick us up."
Amelia Garcia, still panting, nodded but added, "But it’s such a blockage right now, no cars can get through."
"Yeah..." Snow was anxious, but still made the call, at least to have someone on the way, and they could get picked up once the area cleared.
She first called her brother to explain the situation, then sought her friend’s input, "Should I also call Christopher Hart?"
"Hmm... call him, see if he answers." Initially annoyed about being blocked by that guy, but with things like this happening now, she couldn’t be bothered with such trivial matters.
Snow dialed the number, waiting for an answer, only to be surprised — it got hung up!
"Damn! Why is Christopher Hart so childish?! Even after all the good things I said about him!" Snow cursed furiously, glaring at the phone in disbelief, before dialing again!
Amelia gave a wry smile, "He must know I’m with you, thinking I’m using your phone to call, so he’s not answering."
Snow dialed once more, put the phone to her ear, grumbling angrily, "Christopher Hart, if you dare not answer again, I swear I’ll stop speaking up for you!"
Whether it was her "threat" working across the airwaves or not, this time, the call went through.
But before she could speak, Christopher Hart started sarcastically, "Did you think I wouldn’t know it’s you just because you used Snow’s phone? Since you dared to break the promise, why bother looking for me now?"
Snow lashed out, "What’s wrong with you, Christopher Hart! Amelia’s in trouble, come if you want!"
Miss Fitch, known for her fiery temper, hung up without waiting for a response!
"Hmph! Let’s see you act tough now!" Snow, clutching the phone, instructed her friend sitting on the ground, "If he calls back, don’t answer, let him be anxious! Can’t believe we can’t handle him!"
