Scum Daddy Dreams Of Stealing My Mommy!
Chapter 40 Dissolution of Engagement

Chapter 40: Chapter 40 Dissolution of Engagement

Christopher Hart had just started his car when Lily Garcia’s call came through.

"Christopher, Wendy mentioned that your parents are back in the country. It’s been a while since we’ve seen them, why don’t we go home tonight and join them for dinner?"

Lily Garcia was still playing dumb, as if she was oblivious to the "feast at Hongmen" already arranged for tonight.

The man’s expression was indifferent, and so was his tone, "Hmm, I’m on my way."

"Really?" The woman sounded excited, "Then come and pick me up, I’m ready too!"

"It’s not on the way."

"..."

There was a pause on the other end, and then the woman cooed, "Christopher, if Auntie finds out we’ve not been getting along recently, you might end up getting scolded again... I’m thinking of you, too."

"A mother scolding her son, isn’t that natural? Thanks for your concern."

"Christopher, you—"

"I’m driving, hanging up now."

As soon as he finished speaking, he hung up the phone regardless of what the person on the other end might think.

Lily Garcia held her phone, fuming with anger.

Beside her, Lily’s mother, the current matriarch of the Garcia Family—Fiona Marshall, had been eavesdropping and sunk into a mood upon hearing the conversation.

"What kind of attitude is that?! It’s outrageous!"

Lily Garcia, struggling to hold back tears, turned around with a sense of grievance, "Mom, what do we do now? I think he’s definitely tired of me, and just when Amelia Garcia, that bitch, comes back, he might be thinking of remarrying her!"

Fiona Marshall frowned and asked her daughter sternly, "Are you sure that woman is Amelia Garcia?"

"Wendy Hart had seen her too, she confirmed it’s her!"

"But they said she had a premature birth, bled profusely, and died in the hospital. It’s been four years, how could she come back to life? It’s too weird."

"Oh Mom... isn’t anything possible in this world? The kidney donation, it wasn’t really my..."

"Shush!"

Fiona Marshall saw her daughter speak carelessly and glared at her, scolding in a low voice, "How many times have I told you? Don’t ever bring this up again! You must tell yourself, you were the one who donated to Wendy Hart! You saved her life! You are their savior, a big benefactor for the entire Hart Family!"

Lily Garcia nodded repeatedly, "I know, I was just anxious just now..."

"Remember in the future, even if you’re anxious, you can’t speak recklessly! You must believe deep down that you were the one who donated a kidney to Wendy Hart and saved her life! Understand?"

The Goebbels effect proves that repetition is a force, a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth.

Fiona Marshall wanted her daughter to be continuously brainwashed until she had no doubts about the lie.

Lily Garcia looked at her mother’s solemn face and nodded again, "I donated a kidney to Wendy Hart and saved her life, I am a big benefactor of the Hart Family."

"That’s right!"

Fiona Marshall was somewhat satisfied with her daughter’s attitude, stood up angrily and declared, "Let’s go, I’ll accompany you to the Hart Family home. We’re not leaving today until we settle this matter. They’ll see the Garcia Family’s daughter is not to be trifled with!"

With her mother’s support, Lily Garcia immediately felt emboldened, her previous disheartened expression replaced with one of confidence, as she stood tall and proud.

————

The ancestral home of the Hart Family was situated by the side of Bright Lake.

A vast array of buildings was scattered throughout, taking advantage of the scenic landscape with mountains and water, resembling a paradisiacal haven.

When Christopher Hart returned, the main house was already buzzing with lively conversation.

Seeing the tall figure step into the living room, the elders turned their heads and greeted, "Oh, Christopher’s back."

"Christopher, come, come sit over here."

Christopher Hart gave a forced smile and walked over, "What’s the occasion today? Why is everyone here?"

Wendy Hart sat in her wheelchair, looking at her elder brother and said, "Brother, today really is a great day! You’ll find out soon enough."

"Is that so..." Christopher Hart looked at his sister and followed up.

In the past, he had been extremely fond of this sister, to the extent that family and friends teased him as a "sister complex" or "sister-protecting lunatic."

But at some point, he felt that his sister had changed.

She became inscrutable, duplicitous, and... altogether unfathomable to him.

Just like now, as he watched the smile on his sister’s face, he couldn’t shake the feeling that it smacked of conspiracy.

The man took his seat and ventured, "You wouldn’t be discussing my marriage prospects, would you?"

From the main seat on the sofa, Emma Carter laughed, "It seems you’re not too far gone to realize what you should be doing at your age."

As expected.

Christopher’s expression remained unaffected, and he didn’t even furrow his brow as he asked, "Mom, has the Garcia Family been pressuring you?"

Heh, the mere Garcia Family daring to pressure us?"

"So, what’s the hurry?"

"What do you mean, ’what’s the hurry?’ At thirty years old, should you not be settling down in marriage?"

He snorted in disdain and didn’t deign to respond.

His father, George Hart, came over and upon seeing his son return alone, asked, "Where’s Hope? Didn’t she come back with you?"

"Why bring her up? If she didn’t come back, then she didn’t," Emma immediately countered her husband.

George continued, "Well, she is still part of the Hart Family; shouldn’t she be back?"

Emma remained silent but her complexion was anything but pleasant.

The atmosphere grew awkward, and the other elders nudged Emma, murmuring comforting words of advice.

With a sigh, Emma conceded, "Lily Garcia truly isn’t a good match for our Christopher... but how can we deny the debt owed to the Hart family? We promised this marriage, and if we keep delaying, what will people think?"

"Indeed, donating a kidney is such a huge sacrifice; it’s not something just anyone can do."

"Yes, and to put it inelegantly, this life-saving favor is akin to being granted new parents. No amount of compensation would be too much, not to mention it’s only a marriage."

One by one, the relatives weighed in, nodding in agreement.

Christopher had not intended to speak, but the moral shackles grew increasingly heavy, forcing him to retort, "If that’s the case, why don’t we have Wendy acknowledge Lily Garcia as her godmother and subsequently provide for her in old age?"

"What?!"

His words sent shockwaves through the room!

George Hart slammed his hand against the armrest of the sofa and berated, "You bastard, what nonsense are you spouting! Is this how you speak about your own sister?!"

Christopher remained unaffected, "Lily Garcia saved Wendy. Isn’t it only right that Wendy repays her? Why should my happiness for the rest of my life be sacrificed?"

"You—"

"I came back this time to make it clear that I’ve decided to break off my engagement with Lily Garcia. As for repaying the favor, whether Wendy calls her godmother or we settle it with money—take your pick."

Just inside the doorway of the living room, the mother and daughter from the Garcia Family, having paused for a few seconds upon entering, listened to Christopher’s words, feeling as though a bolt of lightning had struck on a clear day.

"So, Christopher Hart, now that you’ve grown bold, you’re afraid of nothing, is that it?"

Fiona Marshall stormed in through the door, raising her handbag to hurl it at Christopher.

Fortunately, the relatives quickly rose to their feet and intercepted her.

"Mrs. Garcia, please calm down, Christopher is just confused; don’t take him seriously. We’ll talk some sense into him..."

"Yes, our Hart and Garcia families have long been as close as kin; everyone knows that! Lily is the recognized future Mrs. Hart."

Christopher stood up, one hand in his pocket, and with a scoff that was neither a smile nor a frown, hummed, "If she’s the future Mrs. Hart as determined by you all, then you marry her."
