Chapter 397: Chapter 397: Bankruptcy is Imminent
Christopher is in a board meeting.
Upon receiving a call from Amelia, he pressed hang up and then asked Lucas King to go out and respond first.
Lucas King exited the meeting room and called Amelia Garcia.
"Madam, President Hart is in a meeting and can’t take calls right now."
Amelia asked urgently, "Has he thought of a strategy to deal with it? And regarding the rumors about King Richard II and Lady Fox, has he arranged for someone to handle them?"
Lucas was surprised, "Madam, you already know?"
"Yes."
Lucas, thinking the boss didn’t want his wife to worry, feigned a relaxed tone to comfort her, "Don’t worry, these are just trivial tactics; President Hart can handle them. As for Summit Industries continuing to buy shares in Seal-Cloud... President Hart is well aware, this morning, Dunn Hart gave up most of his shares, significantly increasing President Hart’s holdings."
"Is that so?" Upon hearing this news, Amelia’s expression eased a bit.
"Yes, rest assured. Although the situation is tricky, President Hart can still handle it."
"Alright, then I’ll head to the office now. Let him call me back when he’s done."
"Understood."
After hanging up, Amelia felt a bit more relaxed.
Arriving at the company, all her colleagues had shown up, and to her delight, Shaw had returned as well!
"Sis! Happy New Year!" Shaw ran to her excitedly.
Amelia was overjoyed, hugging her loyal assistant of several years, thrilled.
"It’s great to see you back! Is your leg all right now?"
"Yes, it’s all healed!" Shaw let go and deliberately hopped around to show her, "See, the doctor said I recover well, just need to be cautious."
"Alright, alright, be careful, don’t jump like Snow and have another accident," Amelia quickly reached out to stop her.
On the first working day of the new year, it was customary for the boss to distribute New Year red envelopes for good luck.
Amelia took out the thick envelopes she had prepared in advance and handed them out to her colleagues.
Betty was also at the company, following Amelia step by step.
"Now that your assistant is back, are you going to let me go?"
"I really like this job, can you keep me here? I can do other work too."
"I’ve been working hard on my Chinese, and I’ve improved a lot. I want to stay here for good."
After finishing with the red envelopes, Amelia turned to her office, then asked Betty, "Have you been staying at Benny Palmer’s house these past few days?"
"Yes!" Betty said confidently and righteously, "He won’t give me money, and I have nowhere else to stay, so I can only stick around at his house."
"..." Amelia frowned, "You two... being single and alone, haven’t you been—"
Betty was stunned, initially confused, until she saw Amelia’s ambiguous and doubtful expression, then she suddenly understood, "That guy doesn’t even dare to see me! He hasn’t been back for days!"
Is that so?
Amelia pondered for a moment, "If you truly want to stay, follow Shaw. You two are about the same age, Shaw has been abroad for many years, her English is excellent, communication won’t be an issue, and she can teach you Chinese."
Betty, hearing that she wasn’t being sent away, nodded repeatedly, "Great, great! Thank you so much!"
Before they could finish talking, Amelia’s phone rang.
Seeing it was Christopher calling, she quickly signaled to Betty before turning to her office to answer.
"Hello."
Christopher had just finished his meeting and was also heading back to his office, speaking in a low, gentle tone, "Have you arrived at the company?"
"Yes, I’ve already distributed the New Year’s red envelopes."
Amelia replied cheerfully but felt her mood sink when she thought about the challenges he was facing, "How are things on your end? I read the morning news, that Summit Industries company isn’t to be underestimated. They’ve clearly prepared thoroughly during the Spring Festival."
"Indeed, it was somewhat unexpected."
"Can you handle it?"
"For now, yes."
Amelia, thinking he must need funds for large-scale stock acquisitions, brought up, "The assets you gave me before, I’ll return them to you now. I understand your intentions. Once we’ve overcome this hurdle, you can return them to me later."
Christopher knew she was worried and didn’t hide it, revealing, "I still have some directed issued stocks on hand, all injected with quality assets that are quite profitable—originally I hesitated to sell them, but given the current situation..."
He hesitated for a moment, then chuckled softly, "Don’t worry, your man has weathered many storms. It’s okay, I’ve arranged meetings with a few investors today, it will be settled, funds won’t be a problem."
Amelia, although not very knowledgeable about the stock market, understood the significance of directed issued stocks and felt a bit relieved, "That’s good, but I’ll also make preparations here, just in case."
"Amelia, you—"
"Stop nagging, since we’re a team, we rise and fall together. Why are you always trying to separate me from your troubles? Do you think I can only share joy but not hardship with you?"
He chuckled, "You know that’s not what I mean..."
"Then that’s settled, focus on your work, I won’t disturb you."
"Alright, I’ll try to finish work early tonight so I can join you and the kids for dinner."
"Okay." Although his promised might not come true, Amelia still agreed sweetly, intending to reassure him.
Shaw had entered with documents while she was on the phone.
When Amelia finished the call, Shaw looked serious and asked quietly, "Sis, I’ve heard about Seal-Cloud Corporation’s issues. That company’s actions don’t follow business ethics, right? Doesn’t the relevant department intervene?"
Amelia sighed and lowered her shoulders, "It’s against the rules, but so far, no legal boundaries have been crossed."
"What should we do then? Does Mr. Hart have a solution?"
Amelia shook her head, took a deep breath, "Honestly... I don’t know either."
But no matter what, she couldn’t just sit still and do nothing.
Thinking about the property confirmation letter Christopher had given her before, she suddenly stood up, "Shaw, I need to go back for a while. Please help me schedule a lawyer to meet at my office at noon."
Shaw watched her leave quickly and asked worriedly: "Sis, what are you going to do?"
But Amelia had already left in a hurry.
Amelia returned home, took out the asset proof from the safe, and checked all the funds under her name.
She had worked for so many years, and although she earned quite a lot, the expense of raising two children was also significant.
Last year, she parted ways with Kane, and all her savings were turned into shares and invested into the company’s operations.
Later, she helped Michael Garcia clean up the mess after his bankruptcy, putting in a few hundred thousand; that money was borrowed from Snow.
After receiving the year-end bonus before New Year, she immediately repaid Snow.
Now, after checking, she calculated all the liquidatable assets, funds, and savings she had, which amounted to only a few hundred thousand.
This amount of money is not enough for Seal-Cloud Corporation, not even a drop in the bucket.
What to do...
Although Christopher repeatedly emphasized not to bother, how could she completely ignore it?
Seal-Cloud Corporation was the Hart Family’s brand and reputation; if it were to be destroyed in Christopher’s generation, he would surely be very upset.
She remembers, back then, Grandpa defied opposition to hand the company over to him.
And he has always held Grandpa in high regard.
When he said he would let go, he just wanted to force Dunn Hart to voluntarily relinquish power, deep down, he probably never considered giving up Seal-Cloud.
Pondering over this, Amelia became increasingly determined to help him.
Holding those asset proofs, she hurried back to the company to discuss with the lawyer how to liquidate all assets within the quickest time.
The stock market changes in an instant, not a moment can be delayed.
Busy until evening, the kids called.
"Mom, when are you coming back? Aunt Harper has already prepared dinner!" Hope’s sweet little voice came urging mom to go home for dinner.
Amelia rubbed her forehead and glanced at the time on the computer screen, only to realize it was already six o’clock.
Her colleagues had left, she straightened up, and replied with a smile: "Mom will be home soon. Hope should supervise the second big brother, don’t let him eat too much."
"Got it! Big brother and I will watch him, not letting him sneak snacks!"
"Hm, good girl!"
After hanging up the daughter’s call, Amelia thought about Christopher’s words during the day, to have dinner together at night, and then opened the contact book.
However, just as she was about to dial, she changed her mind.
If he could leave work, he would surely tell her.
No contact now probably means he’s still busy.
She couldn’t rest assured, so she left the company and drove straight to Seal-Cloud Tower.
Driving was difficult during the evening rush hour, and she arrived at Seal-Cloud Tower past seven.
But the entire building was ablaze with lights, seemingly many departments hadn’t left yet.
She wasn’t an employee of Seal-Cloud Corporation and didn’t have a pass, so she couldn’t get past the first-floor gate, fortunately, the company security had good eyesight, recognizing her as "Lady Fox", allowed her to pass.
She was quite familiar with this place, taking the elevator up, walking and searching along the way.
Many employees were surprised to see her; some were polite and nodded with a smile, while others just curiously watched her walk by.
Amelia heard someone say, "Look, Lady Fox is here," but she didn’t mind.
Her relationship with Christopher, although never publicly announced, was no longer a secret.
She didn’t intend to avoid it.
Successfully found the President’s office.
Just as she was about to knock, she heard voices coming from inside.
"This is definitely premeditated! They’ve been planning for a long time, knowing you inside out, and calculated your moves, taking action ahead!"
"The media war and the stock market short-selling war are seamlessly coordinated!"
"This can be reported, right? It’s a violation of the securities trading regulations!"
"It has to be reported, but it’s of no help to us; what if they get caught? Those funds won’t be returned by the stock market!"
"Mr. Hart, what should we do now? The only option now is to suspend trading temporarily to save ourselves."
"Christopher... suspend trading, this way Summit can’t do anything. Give us more time, then we can raise funds."
The people inside the office speaking were Lucas King, Benny Palmer, and a few unfamiliar voices, presumably the company directors and legal officers.
Amelia stood at the door, heart pounding with anxiety.
Even though she hadn’t heard the entire conversation, she could roughly guess that Christopher’s placement stocks were maliciously short-sold.
Huge amounts of funds evaporating into thin air, causing heavy losses, not to mention the cash flow rupture resulting in devastating consequences...
Silence outside and within.
Suddenly, Amelia’s phone rang.
She jumped in fright, quickly taking out her phone, it was the kids calling again—presumably because mom hadn’t returned yet, calling to urge her.
"Hello, baby... mom is with dad, something delayed me, can you eat first?" Amelia answered the call, coaxing the kids on the other side.
The door in front opened, Benny Palmer stood before her.
Inside the office, Christopher sat behind the desk, his gaze crossing the spacious room and falling on the woman at the door.
Amelia coaxed the kids in a few words, hung up the phone, exchanged her gaze with the man’s deep look, and stepped inside.
