Chapter 385: Chapter 385: Homeless on New Year’s Eve
On New Year’s Eve, Amelia Garcia got up early, dressed the kids in new clothes, braided Hope’s hair into a pretty little braid, and started her busy day.
Fuller and Aunt Harper didn’t go home for the reunion, saying they were worried she might not be able to manage three kids alone, and would only reunite with their families when they have some free time in the coming days.
Amelia felt deeply grateful and gave each of them a large red envelope as gratitude.
After lunch, as she was contemplating whether to take the kids out to feel the festive atmosphere in the afternoon, Snow Fitch called.
"I suggested taking the kids out for a holiday trip for New Year, you said it’s inconvenient, but surely a walk in the city is fine?"
"Sure! I was just about to reach out to you!"
"Then let’s go to People’s Square, it’s definitely the liveliest place!"
"Alright!"
After hanging up the phone, Amelia had just packed the essential items for the kids to go out when her phone rang again.
She looked over and found it was Shaw.
"Hi, Shaw, happy New Year!"
"Sis, happy New Year! I’m returning home tomorrow, after the holiday break, I’ll be able to go back to work!" Over there, Shaw, still abroad, shouted excitedly.
Amelia was elated, "Really? Have all your injuries healed?"
"Yeah, pretty much. As long as I don’t do any intense exercise, walking and stuff is fine."
"Good."
"But sis, what will happen to Betty when I go back to work?" In the past two months without Shaw, Betty was filling in; Amelia didn’t hide this from her staff, so Shaw was aware.
Amelia pondered for a moment, "Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. You just come back."
"Yes! Happy New Year, and pass my greetings to the little ones too. Just tell them when Sister Shaw comes back, she’ll give them red envelopes!"
"Okay!"
The weather was nice, with warm sunshine. People’s Square was bustling with activity and thronged with visitors.
Amelia met up with Snow Fitch, noticing that this place was indeed crowded, requiring them to shout to be heard. So, they decided to change locale to an indoor playground within the mall.
Though still crowded, the three little ones could be thrown into the ball pit, saving much hassle.
Snow Fitch heard about Shaw’s return and was equally curious: "What about that rich girl? Are you going to send her packing?"
Amelia sipped her milk tea, furrowing her brows, troubled, "I thought she’d go back once the novelty wore off after a few days, but who would’ve thought she’d get hooked! And truth be told... she’s pretty capable at work."
"Then why not keep her?"
"That’s not possible..." She shook her head, "The salary I offer isn’t even as much as she pays for her translators, not to mention the bodyguard and driver."
Keeping her like this would be doing her a disservice, wouldn’t it?
"This doesn’t work, that doesn’t work, see... it’s up to you to figure it out!"
Amelia sipped her milk tea, still pondering solutions when suddenly, her phone rang.
She glanced down and nudged her friend with her arm.
Snow Fitch turned around, "What’s up?" Upon seeing the phone ringing, she was surprised, "What a coincidence? We were just talking about her, and she calls you now?"
Amelia chuckled and answered the call, curious about what this rich heiress might want.
"Hi, Betty, happy New Year." She spoke fluid London-accented English, causing nearby parents to look over.
It was too noisy here, so she nudged her friend, reminding her to keep an eye on the kids, and went off to find a quieter spot.
On the other end, Betty sounded hoarse and mournful, "I’m not happy, not happy at all..."
Her expression changed suddenly, she hurriedly asked, "What’s wrong? Are you crying?"
With that question, Betty indeed started bawling, "Waaah, I have nowhere to go... wah, I am wandering the streets, so pitiful!"
This—
Amelia was perplexed and worried, quickly trying to calm her down, "Wait, calm down first. What happened? On New Year’s, how could you be wandering the streets? What exactly is going on?"
Betty sobbed, "My family... cut off all my financial support, even my own bank cards are frozen! Don’t you think that’s too much? I’m over eighteen, I’m an adult! How can they do this? This is illegal in our country, illegal, you know? They just want to force me back home, try to leave me without a penny so I’ll have to return!"
Before the words were finished, she began to cry again.
Upon hearing this, honestly, Amelia felt happy inside.
This daunting figure was finally going home!
But Betty was crying so sorrowfully, she couldn’t just find it amusing, so she sympathetically said, "Indeed, they’re too harsh. Where are you now? Can you have your bodyguard send you near People’s Square? I’m nearby, we can talk in person."
"What bodyguard! I don’t even have money for food or to stay in a hotel, let alone afford a bodyguard! My phone can barely make calls, wah..."
"Uh—" Amelia was somewhat at a loss, scratched her head, and said, "Then text me your location, and I’ll have someone come pick you up."
"Yes, hurry up! I’m so hungry, I haven’t had lunch, wah..."
"..." Amelia was truly speechless.
After hanging up, receiving the location from Betty, she immediately contacted Fuller to go pick her up.
Returning to the ball pit area, Snow Fitch saw her looking full of complex emotions, sensing the gossip, eagerly asked, "What happened? Is she going back to her country?"
"Ah, don’t even mention it... her family has cut her off, frozen all her cards, including her own private stash, now she’s penniless, out on the street, and hasn’t eaten lunch yet, crying pitifully." Amelia shook her head, not quite sure if she felt happy or sad.
"What?!" Snow Fitch shouted in surprise, paused for a moment, and then laughed, "Turns out the methods of parental control aren’t bounded by nationality or race, hahahaha, hilarious!"
"Cut it out, have some humanity."
Snow Fitch stopped her laughter, though the smile remained, "So what now? Not only do you have to keep her job, but also provide accommodations?"
Amelia was worried too: "I don’t know, I’ll first provide a place to stay, then slowly persuade her to return to her country."
This was her plan, thinking Betty wouldn’t be able to withstand life without money and would soon compromise with her family—and then she could finally get rid of this Lady Bodhisattva.
However, unexpectedly, when Betty arrived, the first thing she asked was, "Where does that guy surnamed Palmer live?"
Amelia didn’t react immediately, "What guy named Palmer?"
Snow Fitch was quick to catch on and immediately asked, "You mean Benny Palmer?"
"Yes! That’s him! I just called him, said I’d return that set of emeralds, asked him to give me money; he refused! That man, how can he be so heartless! I’m so miserable, doesn’t he have any compassion? He’s so wealthy!"
Betty went on and on, already drawing attention in a crowd of Asian people with black eyes and hair, her passionate speech in English was drawing looks and a crowd.
Amelia had to tug her and remind, "Keep it down, it’s New Year, others might think you’ve been dumped in love."
"You tell me quick! Where does he live? I’m going to find him! Once I get back that million, I can live here forever if I’m frugal!"
"Ah, this—" Amelia was a bit hesitant, her eyes silently glancing at her friend.
She didn’t want this daunting figure to stay here forever!
Snow Fitch loved nothing more than to sow chaos, immediately took Betty by the arm, smiling, "I know, I’ll tell you!"
