Chapter 377 Emma Carter’s Awakening
Chapter 377: Chapter 377 Emma Carter’s Awakening
Christopher finished the call, and a few minutes later, Emma Carter was wheeled out from the treatment room.
After each treatment, she would become exceptionally weak and would sleep almost the entire afternoon.
But today, as soon as Emma returned to the ward, she opened her eyes.
George Hart and Christopher were both by the bedside.
Seeing her awake, George immediately leaned closer and asked with concern, "How are you feeling? Do you feel like throwing up again?"
He turned to fetch the trash can, but Emma shook her head, diverting her gaze to Christopher.
Christopher noticed his mother looking at him and knew it wasn’t good news. His heart tightened, but he still sat up and moved his wheelchair forward.
"Mom, do you have something to say?"
Emma, somewhat weak, spoke slowly, "This morning... I saw her leaving your room."
Sure enough—
Christopher’s face instantly turned serious and cold.
"Can’t wait, can you? Your sister just died, tomorrow is the seventh day, and it’s that woman’s fault. Instead of cutting ties with her, you let her stay at the hospital, right before me overnight... Christopher, are you trying to upset me to death so that no one will stop you two from being together, right?"
Upon hearing this, George was also shocked. His face immediately filled with rage as he glared at his son, "That woman came last night? And stayed over?"
For days, Christopher hadn’t defended Amelia in front of his parents.
Because he knew his parents wouldn’t believe it, saying anything was futile.
But now, seeing his mother blame Wendy’s death on Amelia again, he could no longer hold back, "Mom, I don’t understand, are you truly confused or just playing dumb!"
"You know better than anyone how Wendy’s health truly was! Even if that day’s event hadn’t happened, how can you be sure she would have been fine?"
"You simply want to pin the blame on Amelia, refusing to own up to your mistakes, just like when you favored Wendy. So you only believe what you want to believe, regardless of whether it aligns with the facts!"
"You brat! We saw it with our own eyes, how could it be false?" George retorted, glaring.
Christopher’s lips curled into a cold smile, wanting to laugh but unable to, feeling only desolation.
"Saw it with your own eyes... all I said was in vain."
What they saw with their own eyes was just Wendy dying at Amelia’s house, but they refused to think why their supposedly fine daughter would go looking for trouble at someone else’s house and die there, bringing so much shadow and ill luck to others!
He couldn’t believe that they wouldn’t understand Wendy’s intentions that day, knowing their daughter as they did.
There’s a saying: you can never wake someone pretending to sleep.
And right now, his parents were the ones pretending to sleep.
They weren’t clueless; they just didn’t want to acknowledge it, deeply rooted in prejudice and obsession, because to accept Amelia would mean admitting they had been wrong for the past decade or so.
How could they possibly admit they were wrong?
Christopher remained silent for a moment, then said lifelessly, "Parents are said to be great, willing to sacrifice everything for their children, but you... to you, face, dignity, and family values are more important than your son’s happiness and joy."
Perhaps due to his overly heavy and painful expression, George and Emma didn’t interrupt him.
"You always say you’re deeply disappointed in me, but as your son, I’m also deeply disappointed in you as my parents... I love a woman, we’ve even had three children together—yet I don’t understand how twisted and stubborn your minds must be to remain so obstinate. Does seeing me unhappy for a lifetime, living like a zombie, satisfy you, make you happy?"
"Am I truly your biological son, or your sworn enemy?"
Christopher’s forceful questioning rendered Emma and George speechless.
The ward fell into silence. After a while, Emma weakly murmured, "Of course, we want you to be happy, but there are so many good girls, why must it be her..."
"No matter how many good girls there are, if it’s not her, it means nothing to me. Only she can make me happy, joyful, calm my mind, and help me sleep well."
Emma moved her lips but didn’t know what to say.
"Amelia is still thinking about you, advising me not to upset you, to comfort you, saying you’re ill and suffering. Yet you, as elders, don’t show the magnanimity a senior should have. All you do is slander her, malign her, portraying her as a flood and fierce beast."
Emma was startled, "What? You said she... thinks about me?"
"What else? Did you think she would gloat, wishing your illness to worsen? She never did. Even with how you treated her, she never wished you ill—not even a little—because she loves what I love. Even just for my comfort, she doesn’t want anything to happen to you." Christopher revealed everything suppressed in his heart over the past days.
"Mom, this is the true way to love someone, not to hurt indiscriminately in the name of love."
The room fell into silence again, Emma’s expression stunned as if lost in thought, or perhaps in self-doubt.
Then, Christopher’s phone rang.
He saw it was Lucas King’s call, guessing it was about the company, and answered immediately.
Indeed, after a few words from the other side, his expression changed, but he quickly regained composure, instructing calmly, "Let them do as they please. I’ll return to the company tomorrow and hand over my duties."
After hanging up, George’s expression turned extremely stern, "What nonsense are you talking? Who are you handing your duties to? What are you going to do?"
Christopher looked at his father, "Didn’t you previously say that I’m too ruthless with the family relatives? Since they covet the CEO position so badly, I’ll hand it over, this should be enough, right?"
"Nonsense! That old Dunn Hart, how many more years can he last? His two sons are more incompetent than the other. If Seal-Cloud falls into their hands, the company will be doomed sooner or later!"
"That has nothing to do with me. I can’t even protect the woman I love, let alone such a big company." After saying this almost dejectedly, he rubbed his eyes wearily and sighed, "Dad... I’m too exhausted. I want to go back and rest for a bit. You stay with Mom during the day at the hospital. I’ll come back in the evening."
As soon as he finished his sentence, he turned his wheelchair towards the door.
George, anxious, called out loudly, "Christopher! You can’t act on impulse! Seal-Cloud has grown to its current size under your leadership. Your grandfather valued you so much, putting in great effort to entrust the company to you—aren’t you afraid of disappointing him like this?"
Christopher had reached the doorway. Hearing this, he turned around and said coolly, "Grandpa cherished Amelia so much in life, even using company shares to force me to marry her, assuming she’s the only real granddaughter-in-law of the Hart Family. But what did you do? If you’re not afraid of disappointing Grandpa, what should I be afraid of?"
"You—" George was left speechless by the retort.
Only Emma and George were left in the ward.
After a long while, Emma, with reddened eyes, murmured almost to herself, "Could it really be... it’s us who were wrong? So many years... all I wanted was for them to have a good life, everything I did was for their sake... how did it all end up wrong, all wrong..."
