Chapter 171: Chapter 171: Escape and Spies
"Deep down, Christopher Hart didn’t wish for that child to be Amelia Garcia’s.
If those two boys and Hope were biological siblings, it would mean they were his own sons—and their past interactions had been terrible.
He had, more than once, publicly criticized that child for being ill-mannered, rude, and annoying.
What a slap in the face it would be if they were his own?
How was he to restore his image as a father in the child’s eyes?
And if those boys were fathered by another man during her years abroad...
He found that even more unacceptable.
The thought of the woman he had loved for so many years being with another man was enough to make his blood boil, not to mention that she had borne him two sons.
Just seeing her being affectionate with that foreigner was driving him insane.
If she had children with someone else...
Christopher clutched his phone, leaning against the car door, his eyes tightly shut and head bowed.
He hoped that, in the end, those two boys turned out to be adopted.
That way, she could leave the kids with that foreigner and come back to him and their daughter—that would be the perfect outcome.
After Hope left, Amelia Garcia rushed to work.
On the way, she called Shaw to check on the brothers.
The boys had already grown accustomed to following anyone’s lead and were quite comfortable playing at the assistant’s home.
"Noah, would it be okay for Kane to take you and your brother first?" Amelia tentatively asked her son.
Noah didn’t answer but instead asked, "Mom, is our sister coming with us?"
"That’s unlikely. Your birthday is coming up, and all these years, I’ve never celebrated with her. This time, I’ll stay with her first, then come back to Zurich to be with you, okay?"
The understanding Noah didn’t mind whether his mother could celebrate with him or not; he was just sad that they couldn’t celebrate with their sister or give her their blessings in person.
"Mom, we’ll do as you say."
"Hmm, my dear, you’re so good."
After hanging up, she drove silently, tears inexplicably beginning to well up and quickly blurring her vision.
The challenges and hardships of raising children alone were endless.
But thinking of how well-behaved and sensible her children were, she felt grateful and fulfilled.
Even so, she felt an overwhelming sense of guilt towards her children.
Life couldn’t be perfect, and she had to accept that this regret would remain as the years passed.
After a moment of sorrow, she composed herself and called Kane.
Unexpectedly, a woman answered.
"Hello, Kane is making breakfast. Can I help you with something?" Betty spoke in a genuine London accent, clearly aware of who was on the other end and not at all hesitant.
On the contrary, it almost seemed like she wanted to create a misunderstanding.
Amelia Garcia paused for a moment, then politely responded, "Hello, I’m Kane’s friend. Could you ask him to call me back when he’s free?"
After leaving this message, Amelia was about to hang up, but suddenly the woman on the other end asked, "You’re the mother who was with the children yesterday, right?"
Amelia was taken aback by the straightforward question, falling silent for a second, unsure whether to admit it.
No doubt, this woman was fond of Kane.
However, Amelia had known Kane for years and had never met her.
Now this woman had followed him all the way to China—presumably with Kane’s family’s "support" or "approval"—that’s how she found Kane.
Amelia wondered if Kane had already disclosed something to his family...
Perhaps in opposition, they sent this woman thousands of miles just to make her back down.
Thinking this, Amelia’s resolve faltered.
Actually, she had always refused Kane’s advances, knowing herself well.
Looking at it now, her self-awareness was correct.
Deep down, she was prepared to step back, asking Kane only one last favor.
—Help her take the brothers without Christopher finding them.
"I am, hello," she finally acknowledged her identity after a brief silence, "I’m sorry for deceiving you yesterday."
"It’s okay. Thank you for stepping aside and letting me have Kane. I thought you might cling to him, given how outstanding and charming he is."
Letting go?
Amelia silently chuckled bitterly—had she already retreated?
It seemed not so.
She snapped back to reality when she realized the woman was referring to her actions of traveling with the children, making room for others.
While she was lost in thought, she heard Kane’s voice on the phone, likely coming from the kitchen.
Indeed, Kane picked up the call: "Amelia?"
"It’s me."
"What’s up?"
"Kane, I can’t leave right now. Take the brothers first, look after them for a couple of days for me."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. Christopher is suspicious and is trying every possible way to find them. I can’t let him succeed."
Kane considered it briefly and agreed, "Okay, a private plane will arrive this afternoon. I’ll take them first."
"Thank you, and sorry for the trouble."
"Are you telling me this?" he protested, "It’s my regret not being able to help you more."
"No, you’ve helped me a lot already. I am grateful for the rest of my life."
Her voice hinted at something amiss to any discerning listener.
Sure enough, Kane sounded alarmed, "Amelia, what are you thinking? Did Betty say something to you? Don’t mind her. When I get back to Zurich, I’ll sort this out."
As he said this, the London accent was heard again.
Amelia didn’t dwell on this; she only asked: "You’re taking Noah and Ethan together. She shouldn’t... mind, right? If she really doesn’t like kids, you can..."
"Wait, wait, wait!" Kane interrupted her needless guesses, explaining, "I asked you to take the children first yesterday because I didn’t want to explain to her. Moreover, I was worried that her knowing about the existence of the children wouldn’t be good... After all, it’s safer the fewer people know about the children’s real identities."
Amelia felt somewhat relieved.
So, that was Kane’s consideration. She thought...
"Right, you’ve thought it through well. Thank you." She sincerely expressed her gratitude then quickly thought it over and reminded him, "Since Christopher is trying to find the children, he might have people follow you, so don’t pick up Noah and Ethan in advance."
"You mean, meet directly at the airport this afternoon?" Kane quickly caught on.
"Yes. When you’re about to leave, I’ll have Shaw take them directly to the airport. If I can manage to shake them off, I’ll send you off at the airport."
Kane also thought this was the most prudent, agreeing, "Okay, we’ll be in touch this afternoon."
After ending the call, he put down his phone, turned to the girl, and said, "Let’s have breakfast."
"Oh, alright!" Betty quickly put down her phone, ready to eat.
However, her locked phone had just saved a recording.
Indeed, she didn’t understand Mandarin and couldn’t eavesdrop, so she pretended to play with her phone while secretly recording the recent call, unbeknownst to Kane.
