Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Driving without a License Leads to Detention
"The road is so wide, and there’s not much traffic; are you blind to have hit us?"
"You should ask yourselves," Christopher replied at a leisurely pace, "The road is so wide and there’s not much traffic; why were you crawling along like turtles? What were you doing in the car?"
Seeing his ambiguous and contemptuous expression, Amelia understood the implications and her cheeks flushed red instantly.
"What do we do to you?" Outraged, she burst into laughter. Amelia immediately hooked Kane’s arm, their intimacy unmistakable, "What, did President Hart’s wedding fall through? Heartbroken and upset, can’t stand to see others flaunt their love?"
Christopher had intended to mock, but this woman had such an incredibly thick face.
His eyes fixed on her hand holding Kane’s, he clenched his fists tightly, fighting the annoyance and wanting to take a knife to chop off that obnoxious arm!
Before their battle could escalate, two police motorcycles rushed to the scene.
Amelia breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing the traffic police arrive.
The police officer saluted after stopping his bike, understood the situation, and took photos for evidence.
Noticing the license plate and then seeing the identity documents, the young policeman evidently recognized the head of the Hart Family and politely said, "Mr. Hart, hello. You are entirely at fault for this accident. Given the minor vehicle damage, would you prefer to settle this between yourselves, or should we take this to the police station for official handling?"
"Let’s handle it officially," Christopher took back his ID and driver’s license, glanced at Amelia, whose complexion had cleared slightly, and finally fixed his eyes on Kane.
"Officer, their driver is that foreign gentleman. You’d better check whether that foreigner has a local driver’s license. If not—that’s equivalent to unlicensed driving."
As soon as Amelia heard this, alarm bells rang in her head! Suddenly, she understood everything!
No wonder he was so calm and even arrogant despite being the one at fault!
He’d been counting on Kane lacking a local driver’s license!
Kane smiled, took out his passport and driving license, "Officer, hello, this is an international driver’s license, I can drive with it."
Amelia remembered that Kane held an international driving license and breathed another sigh of relief.
But the officer frowned seriously, "Were you driving just now?"
"Yes."
"International driver’s license..." The officer hesitated, consulted with his colleague in a low voice, and sought instructions from his superiors.
Amelia, listening to their murmuring, started to feel nervous again. "Officer, is there a problem? We can directly drive in many countries with an international driver’s license."
The young officer looked at them, apologetically saying, "I’m sorry to both of you, but since our country is currently not a signatory to the United Nations Road Traffic Convention, we do not recognize ’international driver’s licenses’ issued by any organization. As Mr. Hart mentioned, this situation is considered unlicensed driving in our country. Besides a fine and vehicle confiscation, there will also be detention."
What?! Amelia felt as if a bolt from the blue had struck her!!!
President Hart smirked in triumph nearby.
"It seems that Mr. Kane’s spell in prison is inevitable, no matter what."
His words had an ulterior motive, and Amelia clearly understood.
She hadn’t wanted to stoop to his level, but she hadn’t expected him to set Kane up this badly!
"Christopher! You—despicable and shameless!" She was burning with rage, staring hatefully at the man, too angry to speak.
President Hart smiled, innocently spreading his hands. "It’s your fault to begin with; why blame me?"
The policeman, seeing that they knew each other, felt surprised, but still had to conduct his duties impartially.
"Miss Norton, please come with this foreign gentleman to the station," the officer said politely.
Kane, anxious, became less fluent in Chinese and switched to English, explaining repeatedly that the international driver’s license was valid in many countries; he didn’t know it wouldn’t work in China, and so on.
Amelia panicked, "Officer, we really didn’t know. We’ve driven in many countries before and thought it was the same domestically. Ignorance is no crime; we’re first-time offenders, we promise it won’t happen again, could you please make an exception?"
The officer was clearly in a difficult position, "Miss Norton, we don’t have the authority for that. Please cooperate with us, okay?"
Christopher leaned against his car, enjoying the drama, "If I were you, I’d hurry up and contact a lawyer instead of wasting time with all this chatter."
"Shut up!"
Amelia grew more upset and whipped out her phone to call Snow Fitch. She wanted to ask if she knew anyone with influential connections, all the while glaring at Christopher, as if she would pounce and bite him any moment.
Kane, reminded by Christopher’s words, had a realization!
"Don’t worry, let’s go with the police first; I’ll have a way," he consoled her, frantic at the unfolding events.
Amelia looked at him, "Do you have a way?"
"Yeah."
The call also went through. She heard Snow’s voice but had to move their car as the police reminded them not to obstruct traffic. Amelia quickly said, "Snow, it’s okay now, we’ll talk when I get back, gotta hang up."
She had obtained her local driver’s license soon after returning to the country to facilitate her travel.
She drove the Porsche to the side of the road and waited for the tow truck.
Christopher’s vehicle wasn’t badly damaged and could still be driven. Seeing they were inconvenienced without a vehicle, he offered, "Do you want a ride to the police station?"
"Fuck off!" Amelia refused without hesitation, "I’m afraid I might not stop myself from taking you down with me!"
"..." The man pursed his lips in a smile, got into his car, and said, "Then see you at the station."
The Bentley sped off.
Amelia stood on the side of the road, dizzy with anger. After a while, she steadied herself and asked, bewildered, "What’s that bastard going to the police station for?"
Now that they’d reported to the insurance company and signed the statement of responsibility, as long as he compensated, why follow them to the police station?
Kane snorted coldly, "Besides being a spectator, what else? Childish!"
"Do you really have a way? Do you understand what detention means? It’s..."
"Relax, don’t forget who I am. I’ll call the embassy." Kane reassured her as he took out his phone and hailed a taxi.
Amelia, reminded by him, felt a huge relief. How could she have forgotten Kane’s royal connections!
Suddenly, she felt relaxed and even looked forward to seeing Christopher’s reaction at the station later!
————
When Amelia and Kane arrived at the police station, Christopher was already sitting there calmly.
Seeing the two enter together, he narrowed his eyes and internally snorted, then turned his head away, too lazy to look.
Likewise, Amelia ignored him, not even giving him a glance from the corner of her eye.
The duty officer at the station appeared. Kane explained his innocence again, but the law was the law—first, he had to pay the fine, and then detention would follow.
Christopher approached them at some point, looking at Amelia, "What now? Are you planning on being devoted and accompany him to the jail cell?"
"If I want to, what’s it to you?"
Christopher merely smiled without a word, then mused for a couple of seconds before saying, "You might not care, but have you thought about Hope’s feelings? She talks about you every day, but all you care about is this lousy man."
