Chapter 274: Chapter 272 Old Wu, you’re so confused!_1 Chapter 274: Chapter 272 Old Wu, you’re so confused!_1 “Alright.”
Colin picked up the document on the table, which had split into two copies at some point, one for each of them.
“Hmm.”
Compared to Colin, who casually held the document in his hand, Xu Duojin was much more cautious. He put on a pair of black gloves and then reverently placed the document into a black box and closed it.
“Oh, there’s also this.”
Colin lifted his hand, and a cat-eared maid immediately brought up a black briefcase.
The briefcase landed steadily on the tabletop.
Seeing this briefcase, Xu Duojin’s eyes lit up; he had a genuine fondness for this style of briefcase—
It was also black. He decided he would get one for himself later.
“This is…?” Xu Duojin noted the style and then shifted his gaze back to Colin.
“It was brought from that… other world; it’s the technological achievement of that civilization.”
Colin paused, not mentioning “The Seventh Box Garden World” by name.
“Ah, it’s this.” Xu Duojin had already received some intelligence on the way here and knew of this object. Qin Chuan and others had mentioned that Colin had left this thing on the train.
To be honest, they were definitely lying if they said they didn’t want the entire technological crystallization of another civilization. If not for Old Master Wu’s intervention and the lack of information being sent out, probably a bunch of scientists would have been hanging around Colin’s doorstep.
Even so, there were still people in Base No. 5 who were deeply upset every day, exclaiming something like: “Such an important thing is lost, and you don’t even ask, Old Wu is so muddle-headed!”
After all, it was the crystallization of a civilization’s achievements, and now that it was taken by that “company,” which in their observation seemed like some sort of living entity conglomerate, they didn’t hold out any hope that they could get it back.
However, if Colin knew what they were thinking, he would probably just laugh. The technology mastered by Bonfire Company was so fantastically advanced they couldn’t possibly be interested in such things.
“What do we need to give in return?” Xu Duojin took a deep breath, thinking about how to obtain this item.
However, what he didn’t expect was Colin’s next sentence.
“Nothing is needed; this is a gift, there are no obligations,” Colin gestured dismissively.
“Nothing is needed?!”
How could that be possible? Xu Duojin was somewhat incredulous. Although he knew he could play the emotional card from an official standpoint, that sort of appeal might work on ordinary people but would probably be ineffective and even offensive to the person before him.
Perhaps it was due to certain unfortunate experiences in his childhood, but they found that Colin showed a considerable degree of aversion to these matters under various circumstances…
This wasn’t to say that Colin was cold-hearted. In fact, reports showed that he also did good deeds—quite a few of them—but that didn’t mean he would approve of someone using these deeds to force him into doing “good things” or making sacrifices.
“Hmm, come to think of it, it’s not that we need nothing at all.”
Colin wasn’t aware that the other party was mentally recounting his family history; at this moment, speaking as he recalled the time when 331 entrusted it to him, he didn’t wait for the other party to speak and continued:
“Don’t forget the efforts of the people on the list, don’t conceal or overlook their achievements. Besides, if there are any results or progress, I hope you’ll let me know.”
“Certainly, Mr. Colin, please allow me to express our respect to them and to you on behalf of us all,” Xu Duojin said, standing up, removing his top hat, revealing a shiny bald head, and bowing to the black box and then to Colin.
“Uh… there’s no need for that.”
Colin was somewhat unaccustomed to this formality; after the brief interlude, he formally handed the item over to Xu Duojin.
“May I learn a little about what kind of remnants from that world, in general terms, you can provide?” Xu Duojin asked with curiosity.
“Certainly.”
Colin nodded. Except for those two or three peak Ninth Level personnel, being at Eighth Level already practically hit the ceiling, and they certainly had the clearance to be informed about these matters.
Right there and then, with Colin’s explanation, Xu Duojin understood what was inside the briefcase.
The specific technology was mainly the domains of the Human Future Research Institute and Dawn’s Light Foundation, with additional contributions from several other research institutes, though none as complete as those two.
Among them, the technology from the Human Future Research Institute tended toward body enhancement modifications, primarily for the stomach, heart, muscles, skin, brain, lungs, blood, and other aspects through multiple surgeries.
After these modifications, a special medication would be used to further activate the enhanced capabilities in combat.
And “Dawn’s Light Foundation” chose the path of mechanical augmentation, offering two sets: one mechanical, one a brain network; used in tandem, like the Golden Mask that 331 once had, essentially everything but the brain was mechanical.
Beyond that, there were items like the Reality Stabilization Spear; such things also existed on Earth, but the technology used by each was not quite the same.
Then there were the technologies from other shelters, which Colin had not come into contact with, so he understood them less.
“The most advanced technology is ‘Nano Intellectual Mechanism,’ but I reckon the chances of it being developed aren’t very high, at least not in a short amount of time…”
Colin pursed his lips, feeling a bit thirsty, when a maid timely offered him a cup of something refreshing.
After defeating “The Hague Shelter,” 331 told him that it was only after searching through the shelter’s information that they learned that “Nano Intellectual Mechanism” was not actually developed by the “Hague Research Institute.”
Rather it was something that “Future Colin” had unearthed from who knows where, as if by archaeology…
In the aftermath of the great tsunami that had occurred, what escaped were not solely disasters, but also some bizarre spacecraft or relics that had been washed ashore; even a number of core technologies from two shelters had been “archaeologically” unearthed.
“Alright, I’ve handed over the items to you; the rest is up to your research progress.”
“Okay.”
Xu Duojin nodded his head, carrying a briefcase weighing several hundred pounds, finally understanding why Mr. Wu had instructed an Eighth Level Personnel like himself to handle the transaction.
Because it was truly too valuable to allow even the slightest damage…
“By the way, how old are you exactly?” Colin inquired out of curiosity.
“Nominal age 40.”
“Older than Old Master Wu?”
“Yes, I am one year older than Mr. Wu.”
Xu Duojin nodded. In some sense, the title “Old Master Wu” was more like a nickname, after all, there weren’t many who could guess his age at first glance, and many genuinely thought he was old.
But for those in the know, like him, calling by the nickname “Old Master Wu” seemed a bit disrespectful.
As the conversation was about to end and Xu Duojin was getting ready to leave, something suddenly occurred to him: “Right, there’s something I might need to mention. Since your appointment was quite abrupt, there might be some dissatisfaction towards you when you assume your post tomorrow, probably from a Sixth Level ‘Agent.’
“In order to successfully achieve what you’re asking for on your end, we can’t intervene, or it could cause considerable trouble.”
Colin had many secrets, known only to a select few and, in the eyes of those unaware, he was just a leader who had suddenly been parachuted in; therefore, to avoid misunderstandings, it was still important to give a heads up.
Otherwise, the moment he walked away with the goods, Colin could be “thwacked” with a big stick, which would be quite awkward.
“Is that so?” Colin stroked his chin and didn’t seem surprised.
“Mm…”
Having no doubt about Colin’s ability to resolve the issue, Xu Duojin thought for a moment before saying, “Senior figures won’t show up. Aside from that, as long as no one dies or causes a large-scale reaction, it should be fine.”
He subtly revealed some information.
Xu Duojin was very aware that even without the identity of a Bonfire Company agent, just the contents of this briefcase, should even a small result be achieved through research, would be enough to build a golden statue for Colin.
Add to that Mr. Wu’s explicit show of support for Colin in his last days, and Colin wouldn’t face any real trouble during this period.
Those who were powerful would be wary and would not come; those who were weak wouldn’t be much of a problem.
“Then I understand,” Colin nodded.
After that, Colin saw Xu Duojin off and sat back down on the sofa.
“Tomorrow I will take up the post, get to know my own jurisdiction, and the day after tomorrow, I will start on the ascension task from E level to D.”
Colin took a deep breath and didn’t take seriously the potential issues of the next day; then, seemingly struck by a thought, he transferred fifty thousand yuan to someone via his mobile phone.
However, just a few minutes after he made the transfer, the call from the old dean came in, and his words were none too polite.
“Xiao Lin, you little rascal, did you rob a bank or what!?”
