Chapter 228 - 228 228 The Thing in the Darkness_1

Chapter 228: Chapter 228: The Thing in the Darkness_1 Chapter 228: Chapter 228: The Thing in the Darkness_1 If it weren’t for those damned guys, he would already be a Demon Lord by now, no, even a Demon Duke!

However, before the old demon could finish speaking, his current master, the brash character known as the Lesser Demon Lord “Blood Ritual Baron,” was extremely displeased and physically interrupted him:

“You old thing, there’s really nothing to be afraid of, the era of those guys has been long gone for hundreds of years!”

While speaking, he retracted the meat hammer that had smashed the old demon into a pulp, no longer paying attention to the lump of rotten flesh, he responded invincibly to the incoming summons.

For him, it was just an ordinary and mundane day after all.

Soon, after a slight sense of confusion, he descended into a dark area, enclosed all around, where he could only see on the altar before him, numerous high-class offerings that were somewhat strange to them.

These offerings exuded a tempting aroma…

But what puzzled him were the people who had summoned him here?

A sudden surge of inexplicable palpitations rose in his heart…

He suddenly felt uneasy, but before he could further ponder the situation, a terrifying fluctuation exploded from underground with a speed even he could hardly react to.

“Damn it!”

At the moment of death, all he managed to see was a flash of white light breaking through the ground, and then his consciousness disappeared completely.

Boom…

A massive mushroom cloud rose from the ground, lighting up the night almost like a Little Sun, with a deafening noise, terrifying shockwaves spread outward in all directions.

Even at a considerable distance, Colin and the others could feel a slight vibration beneath their feet.

“So this is the Origin…”

Colin couldn’t help but exclaim, having had the good fortune to experience it once during a “Self-Selected Trial,” but sadly, before he could reflect, he was gone.

Now, from a distance, watching the rising mushroom cloud and feeling the air filled with the scent of destruction,

he couldn’t help feeling awed within, awed by the greatness of human creation, and how insignificant he was in front of such forces.

“I don’t even have the strength to withstand a nuclear blast right now, I need to keep pride and impatience at bay.”

Pursing his lips, after watching with the telescope for a couple of minutes, Colin packed it away and had the team drive toward the site of the nuclear explosion.

In order to get to the scene as fast as possible, they certainly wouldn’t use highly polluting nuclear weapons, but instead, had used a type of nuclear weapon that was more efficient and also more environmentally friendly.

Plus, with their own strength being mighty enough, a bit of residual radiation wasn’t much of a problem.

However, even after several minutes had passed, as they moved, they could still occasionally feel some remnants falling from the sky.

“Hope it wasn’t blasted into space, or completely disintegrated…”

Colin silently prayed in his heart.

Before long, they passed through the almost flattened wasteland-like area of the nuclear blast zone and arrived at the edge of a huge pit, where they saw chunks of flesh wriggling like maggots.

The direction in which these chunks of flesh squirmed was towards a heart-like object the size of a rotten watermelon…

“Impressive, to still be alive after that,” someone couldn’t help but exclaim.

“After all, it’s something with a bit of ‘Divinity’…”

Colin wasn’t surprised in the slightest, just as he was about to say something, he suddenly felt a gaze filled with resentment as tangible as matter being cast upon him.

The source of that gaze seemed to be the heart on the ground, which, unbeknownst to when, had grown an eye riddled with blood vessels, staring at him fiercely with venomous hatred.

“What are you looking at?”

Colin snorted, no longer hesitating, he took the initiative to jump down the hole, drawing “Revolver Contrarian” in the process, and decisively shot at the heart that was about his own size.

Bang Bang Bang—

Firing thirty-two bullets in succession, stopping at the last one, Colin did not continue to fire.

And when Colin stopped, a mouth grew on the enormous, bizarre heart.

“Heh heh heh, you damn humans, give up already. This weapon is of no use to me. Your only option is to use that ‘thing’ once more, but obviously, such a powerful attack is a one-time deal for you,”

“Once I gather and resurrect, you’ll all be dead!”

“I will show you the meaning of cruelty!”

“But for now, if you kneel and admit your mistakes, and hand over that weapon to me, I will give you a chance at redemption…”

“I might even let you become one of my minions, granting you a transformation at the level of life itself…”

Talk about a load of crap… Colin didn’t say anything. He glanced around; the ground was strewn with chunks of flesh of various sizes, all creeping toward their main body.

If it weren’t for the trouble of looking for fuel everywhere, he wouldn’t have bothered listening to this drivel.

However, after another ten minutes or so, feeling that the gathering was nearly complete, Colin raised his right hand and fired a shot at the heart, which had reconstituted some of its flesh and started to beat again.

“Human, I told you this thing could not possibly… What?!”

The heart rapidly withered on the 33rd shot, as if struck by a fatal blow…

At the same time, flames surged around Colin, spreading from beneath his feet, engulfing all the flesh fragments in a sweep as eerie screams echoed through the flames.

Five minutes later, the screams gradually weakened. The chunks of flesh in the flames were burned down to incombustible materials. They looked like lumps of greasy charcoal, with intense power bubbling within.

Seeing that the situation was under control, Colin extinguished the flames, ready to call over the researchers to collect the remains, but then something unexpected happened.

Suddenly, one of the charred chunks of flesh exploded violently. It had a core that shot out like a cannonball, attempting to escape the area at an inconceivable speed…

“Damn, I let my guard down!”

Colin quickly regained his senses and tried to move, but his step faltered.

He heard a scream filled with sheer terror from that direction…

The next second, the charred chunk of flesh seemed to be slung from the darkness and tossed not far from Colin.

Colin glanced sideways, and in that moment, it was utterly dead.

‘What was that thing?’

He could tell by the scent that something had briefly appeared, then killed the “demon” chunk and left without leaving a trace.

“What happened? What’s going on?” Other personnel came in after him, and seeing Colin motionless, they couldn’t help but ask.

“It’s nothing, start cleaning up.”

Colin shook his head, having some guesses about the thing that had helped him.

But he didn’t ponder too much, instructing everyone to start collecting the materials from the ground.

Individuals in yellow protective suits from the “Human Future Research Institute” came in, picking up the greasy chunks of carbon.

“At last, we can leave…”

Colin breathed a sigh of relief. Now, everything was ready except for the final step of driving out.

If nothing went wrong, he would be able to leave soon.

“Are we leaving right now?” Qin Chuan couldn’t help but speak out. After being trapped for so many days, the thought of leaving soon felt almost unreal.

“Let’s rest up a bit first…”

As he spoke, and recalling the thing from before, Colin closed his eyes slightly, immersed in the calm darkness, and said thoughtfully, “Before we embark on our departure, we won’t encounter any more danger, nor is it possible for us to encounter danger.”

Whoever puts them in danger is opposing this “world”…

After all, they’re not the only ones who want to leave this world.
