Chapter 173 - 173 173 Investigating the Status of the Book
Chapter 173: Chapter 173 Investigating the Status of the “Book of Fate”_1 Chapter 173: Chapter 173 Investigating the Status of the “Book of Fate”_1 “Investigating the ‘Book of Fate’….”
Colin sharply inhaled, he knew that the ‘Book of Fate’ Lady Bunny was referring to must be the original, not some disposable prop like those ‘Fragments’.
“Yes, we can confirm that the ‘Book of Fate,’ after going missing in the last invasion, is now in their hands. Although it was once property of the company, it doesn’t mean we intend to reclaim it. However, we do need to understand its current status, and possibly, we might even borrow some of its power if we can.”
Listening to Lady Bunny’s words, Colin let out a small sigh of relief inside.
If he were asked to retrieve the item alone, he wouldn’t have considered it and would have outright refused. After all, having just emerged from ‘Script City,’ he now had a basic understanding of how terrifying an item of this caliber could be.
It was simply not something humans could contend with…
But if it was merely an investigation, that shouldn’t be a problem.
From what he could see, it seemed like both the officials and the company had their schemes concerning each other.
However, regardless of their motives, some things needed to be made clear…
“Can you guarantee that this task will not trigger a major disaster?” Colin asked.
“I can. I’ll have the company draft relevant documents.”
Miss Bunny’s tone remained calm: “You don’t have to worry that we have too many ideas about the ‘Book of Fate’ and then make a move to seize it. We are more concerned about whether we can, through it, ascertain the condition of its previous owner.”
“The previous owner of the ‘Book of Fate’?” Colin expressed his surprise.
“Yes.” Lady Bunny nodded, this time without continuing to provide details about that person.
Colin, sensing the situation, did not ask further. He knew that if Lady Bunny didn’t say, it was likely because his clearance level wasn’t high enough.
“By the way, can I ask how they are going to allow ordinary people to enter Bonfire Company?” Colin remembered the young man’s words and his curiosity was piqued.
From Lady Bunny’s initial reaction, it seemed they weren’t aware of this matter, which suggested that the government personnel joining Bonfire Company was not arranged by the company.
“I’m not sure about their exact methods, but the Special Operations Department’s infiltration of the company is not a new development, although they have always refrained from taking more formal action.”
“Constant infiltration?” Colin vaguely sensed something.
Lady Bunny nodded: “By certain methods, they keep channeling the power of the ‘Book of Fate’ into the company. Those ‘Book of Fate: Fragments’ you buy from the Trading Path are what they’ve sent in.
“As long as employees use them, the company forms a connection with the ‘Book of Fate.’ When the time is ripe, they can interfere with some of the company’s mechanisms through the inherent qualities of the ‘Book of Fate’…”
What? The ‘Book of Fate: Fragment’ was bait thrown in by the government personnel?
Colin realized he’d learned something significant. After thinking it over, he asked curiously, “The company side doesn’t stop them?”
“There’s no need.” Lady Bunny shook her head and didn’t explain further, but Colin had some guesses—the company was already full of chaotic things, adding one more wouldn’t make a difference.
“After you return, a mission will be sent to you. At that time, you can decide whether to accept it or not.”
After finishing, Lady Bunny changed the subject: “The part of ‘0-9 Hunger’ you were involved with has been successfully recovered, representing about one-fifth of the total. Starting next Monday, the ‘Advent Project’ will resume…
“Your actions there will proceed on two fronts. The first is to continue collecting information about ‘Hunger,’ though its importance can be decreased.
“The second and main direction is to handle the settlement of the refugees. Starting from the ‘Bonfire Advent Point,’ establish a church to expand the faith. As for the content of the faith, as long as it’s positive and uplifting, whether it’s a belief in science or portraying oneself as an Angel Envoy, it’s all fine.”
“I understand.”
Colin nodded and didn’t complain about the lack of time. After all, seven days in the other world equaled just three hours in reality.
Then, before Lady Bunny could speak again, he preemptively said, “That… during the ‘Passionate Paradise’ mission, ‘Hunger’ almost revived inside me several times.”
Lady Bunny didn’t seem surprised to hear this:
“As long as you don’t overuse the power of ‘Tyrant,’ you don’t need to worry about it for the time being. As for a solution, once you truly master the power of the ‘Firebearer,’ you’ll be able to resolve the issues it brings. For now, the only thing I can do is to take you into custody as well.”
“Uh… What do I need to do? I mean, how to attain the power of ‘Firebearer’…”
Colins quickly added this, worried that she might misunderstand and take him into custody first.
“There’s no set way to become a ‘Firebearer.’ All you can do is act with good intentions in doing what you believe is right and wait for an opportunity to come…”
Act with good intentions and do the right thing? That feels very cryptic…
Colin sighed. He didn’t keep asking, knowing it would be fruitless to do so and believing that he’d just have to take things as they came.
After some more conversation, he finished his discussion with Lady Bunny and returned to reality.
Opening his eyes and sitting up in bed, Colin picked up a parchment from beside him. He opened it, then noticed that the activity level in the “Interaction Hall” seemed to have dropped significantly, a rare sight of fewer people.
“Where is everyone? What’s going on…wait, two o’clock and one minute?”
Colin then remembered that his “self-selected trial event” had just gone live at this time.
And in less than a minute after posting, the participation number had reached six hundred!
“Not bad. That’s at least nine thousand points there. Later, I can try for a Purple-colored Talent.”
Colin nodded in satisfaction and then opened the [Mission List], seeing a new mission had been issued.
[Temporary Event – “Investigate the current status of the ‘Book of Fate’.”]
He glanced briefly at the requirements on the mission. They were similar to what Miss Bunny had mentioned. After joining the “Special Operations Department,” he would gradually improve his position within and attempt to learn about the status of the “Book of Fate.”
“Perfect. That will allow me to find out what image of ‘Bonfire Company’ the official side holds,” Colin nodded, deciding to take on the mission, commencing his dual role as a “spy.”
Besides, in the [Mission List], the countdown for the “Advent Project” had once again started, and the time remained the same, still set for next Monday…
“I have four days to prepare. Since Lady Bunny said there’s not much danger, there probably isn’t. I can bring fewer weapons and more high-calorie condensed biscuits and concentrated syrups. Three hundred liters of spatial capacity can hold quite a bit…”
Colin thought it over and deemed there was no big issue, so he didn’t pay it any more attention and instead began to rethink about ‘Infernal Affairs.’
It was foreseeable that entering the “Special Operations Department” to investigate the book would be his next priority. He needed to plan how to perform effectively.
While he was contemplating, groups of employees began arriving en masse at the dungeon of ‘World Code-13-1.’
