Chapter 107: Chapter 107 Abnormal Earthquake Drill_1 Chapter 107: Chapter 107 Abnormal Earthquake Drill_1 “Tsk, this damned company. Thought it was pretty impressive when I first joined, but then you realize it gets invaded every so often…”
Colin didn’t dare to voice his complaints openly. He just muttered to himself and went back to working on the parchment.
First, he bought six “Decree Book·Fragments” in one go, scooping up all the visible fragments, then started searching for the whereabouts of some of those infamous props through the “Interaction Hall.”
Unfortunately, not many people knew about these props…
“Forget it, let’s leave it to fate. If I can find them, good; if not, so be it. Time to grab some grub.”
Colin shook his head, grabbed a double-sided pancake with mushroom and chicken stew, plus fried a couple of eggs, planning to make do for a meal.
For the past couple of days on the mission, his only source of energy had been compressed biscuits and chocolate…
If it weren’t for his enhanced physique, Colin reckoned he’d now be pondering whether he could take a dump or dealing with constipation issues.
After filling his belly, seeing no useful information on the parchment, he took a bath and lay down in bed, closing his eyes.
He didn’t know how long he had slept when a knocking at the door suddenly woke him up.
He opened his eyes and looked at the clock on the wall.
“Damn it, it’s not even eight o’clock yet, who is it!”
Colin sat up, his face sour, and exhaled in irritation.
Just as he was about to get out of bed, he felt a throbbing soreness all over his body, and his muscles ached terribly, clearly a result of overexerting himself while using “The False Powerhouse.”
By then, the “thump thump thump” of knocking came from the door again.
The sound of hurried footsteps suggested there were quite a few people outside.
Suddenly, Colin seemed to remember something, and his still agitated brain quickly cleared up.
“Have they discovered me? This quickly?”
Colin suddenly remembered that he hadn’t covered his face during the solo Trial Task, so being discovered was highly probable.
However, he hadn’t expected them to find him this fast.
It had only been about eight hours…
“When my battery got stolen before, I didn’t see them being this efficient…”
Colin muttered to himself, got up in pain, tidied up the instant noodle bucket leftover from yesterday’s meal, and headed for the door.
But halfway there, he remembered something, turned back, and sat in his wheelchair.
Then, he wheeled himself to the door and opened it just before the next series of knocks.
Standing outside at that moment were six middle-aged women in their forties or fifties. Some of them had red armbands on their shoulders with yellow letters spelling out, “Happy Rainbow Community Residence Committee.”
The women seemed taken aback to see Colin in a wheelchair as if they hadn’t expected it.
One of the Residence Committee officials asked in surprise, “Are you Colin? Haven’t seen you for a while, what happened to your legs…?”
“Had an accident, can’t move my legs, might not be able to walk in the future.”
Colin explained with a smile and then quietly felt a pang of confusion; these people didn’t seem to be from a government department.
He stealthily sniffed the air outside the door but didn’t detect anyone trying to hide.
Could it be for some other reason?
While his thoughts were racing, Colin preemptively asked, “What’s up so early in the morning, Aunt Wang?”
He wasn’t exactly a stranger to her, but he couldn’t say they were close, just acquaintances, aware that she was a manager in the community.
Apart from Aunt Wang, there were a few others who seemed to be from the property management.
“Well, mainly it’s to notify you that there will be an earthquake preparedness drill in the community, and everyone must participate.”
“An earthquake drill?”
Colin’s expression turned puzzled, wondering if he had misheard—an earthquake drill?
He had never heard of any need for earthquake preparedness in his province all his life…
In the past, when bored, Colin even checked, the only significant earthquake in his province traced back over three hundred years ago.
However, while there were no earthquakes, there had been a few floods…
To be honest, he’d find it more believable if they said they were conducting a drill because bioweapons were being lobbed over, rather than this earthquake nonsense.
“What need do we have for a drill here? Is the neighboring island planning to attack?” Colin tried to probe with a question.
“I don’t know, don’t think we’re bothering you for nothing, this is a requirement from the higher-ups, everyone must participate. Whether they’re at school, at work, or out in the countryside, it doesn’t matter where; everyone has to join in. And it’s not just our area, it’s the whole province that’s involved…”
“The drill starts today at three in the afternoon. Once you hear the alarm, everyone is supposed to run to the nearest park…”
As she spoke, Aunt Wang suddenly stopped and looked at Colin’s legs: “This…”
“It’s okay, I’ll do my best to be there.” Colin, sitting in his wheelchair, waved his hand, indicating he understood.
“I’ll talk to your neighbor so they can give you a hand…”
Give me a hand? If there really were an earthquake, they’d be lucky not to curse my wheelchair for blocking the way and send it flying… Colin waved his hand dismissively: “Ok, ok, don’t worry, I’ll definitely participate.”
As he spoke, he felt the whole decision was absurd.
It was as preposterous as asking someone living in a desert city to participate in a flood evacuation drill.
“Alright, now just sign this notice confirming your participation in the drill…”
“I need to sign it?”
“Yes, sign here to indicate that you voluntarily take part in the earthquake preparedness drill…”
“Heh…”
Colin took the pen, glanced at the notice briefly, found where to sign, and with the red ballpoint pen that Aunt Wang handed him, he wrote down his name.
Yet, as he finished signing, Colin’s body stiffened.
“All set then, go get some rest. I’ll let you know when it’s about time to start the drill,” said Aunt Wang, with her armband, as she took the earthquake preparedness drill notice from Colin and beckoned the rest to move on to the next house.
Colin gave them a long look, then closed the door, sat in his wheelchair, closed his eyes, and took a deep breath, discerning the scents in the air.
“The people seem fine, but that notice is definitely not normal!”
Colin half-squinted his eyes. The moment he signed his name, he instantly felt like he had established a connection with something unknown and vast.
An unclear and indistinct connection.
Was that thing really an earthquake preparedness notice?
No…
It was only at this moment that Colin belatedly realized that this “earthquake preparedness drill” might not necessarily be about earthquakes at all.
It could very well be some unspeakable crisis that required the guise of an “earthquake” to take action.
“So far, I haven’t felt anything amiss; it doesn’t seem like the work of cultists. Aunt Wang said the whole province is involved. If that’s true, cultists definitely can’t pull off such a large-scale operation, so it must be the government departments…”
Colin concentrated for a moment and quickly started to speculate on some possible directions.
But…
Why suddenly undertake such an activity?
As he pondered, something struck him, and he unlocked his phone.
Such an event couldn’t possibly go unmentioned on the news.
