Wang Shiman stomp her foot anxiously: "How can we not be worried? We need to think of something, anything to do. We cannot just stand by and watch Dashan suffer inside!"

The officer’s face changed immediately, and he barked sharply, "Sorry, Director Zhou has ordered that no one is allowed to see Chen Dashan."

"On what grounds can we not see him? He’s only in a detention center and hasn’t been sentenced yet. Even if he were sentenced, we’d still have the right to visit. What you’re doing here doesn’t conform to the law," said Wang Shiman.

"Heh, law? You’re talking to me about the law? If Chen Dashan hadn’t broken the law, would he have been brought in here? The order’s been given from above—no visits means no visits. Director Geng, you know I’m just a beat cop. Don’t make this hard for me. This comes straight from Director Zhou’s mouth. If you want to see him, you’ll have to get his permission. Director Geng furrowed his brow; as a public servant, he obviously couldn’t do anything that broke the rules.

"Fine, I understand. Can you tell me where Director Zhou is?"

"In his office, the second one on the left."

After thanking the officer, Director Geng took Wang Shiman and Zhou Hui outside.

"You saw what happened. I suspect that someone higher up is applying pressure, or perhaps someone is intentionally making trouble for Brother Dashan by denying us a meeting. This is indeed troublesome and doesn’t follow regulations," said Director Geng with a furrowed brow.

Zhou Tingshan frowned and looked at Director Geng coldly.

Dismissively, Zhou Tingshan waved his hand, "I didn’t mean it like that. I am just suggesting we should be allowed a visit."

"I’ve said no and that’s final. Chen Dashan is a severe case of black society involvement. If you meet him and, of course, I’m not speaking about you personally, but if these people with you were to pass on some information covertly, could you take responsibility for that?" Zhou Tingshan spoke with a righteous tone.

Director Geng was determined, "How about this, Director Zhou. They wait outside and I go in, that should be acceptable, right?"

"No!" Zhou Tingshan shouted.

Director Geng grew irate, feeling completely snubbed.

"Director Zhou, I believe Chen Dashan was taken away by you from Furong County, right? According to procedure, shouldn’t Chen Dashan have been brought to the county station for interrogation first? Directly taking him to the city isn’t quite appropriate, is it? Chen Dashan has done Mayor Zhang a good turn, you should think this through!" Director Geng spoke sternly.
