Chapter 98: Chapter 98: The Old House Really Has Good Stuff!
I visited the house Jason’s renting at noon.
When Sean Knight arrived, Jason and his two younger brothers had just got back. Seeing Sean Knight, he was very pleased.
Before Sean could sit down, Jason began to report on the current situation regarding the freight yard:
"Bosuns, half of the yard’s space is now rented out for storing containers.
The remaining half, I have found seven yards willing to sell us a batch of expired, unclaimed containers at a fair price."
"So, does this mean the yard has started to make a profit?"
"Yes." Jason pulled out a notebook, inside which he had scruffily noted down the quantity of containers that had come in in the last two days and the rent they had secured.
Sean glanced at it, but didn’t pay much attention.
The yard was still in its inception stage, everything was rather informal and primitive. It relied heavily on the personal charm of Jason, Bondi, and the boys to manage.
Sean had no plans to intervene. After all, he had no intention to spend his energy there. It would be best if Mr. John found someone else. If not, they could make their primary business recycling abandoned containers and secondary, renting space.
However, Jason never considered this yard as Sean’s side project. He enthusiastically chatted about the work he had done over the past few days and his idea for the business.
It was only when Freya Perez brought lunch that he, still full of things to say, stopped talking.
The lunch consisted of rice as the main dish, spicy chicken, potato beef stew, and streamed sea fish.
There was plenty of it, served in big dishes.
Sean was surprised. Freya Perez had made some steamed fish and it smelt pretty good.
This meal gave Sean a real taste of wolfing down food.
Jason and his brothers ate their food from the large dish at a pace that could only be described as ravenous!
The rice was covered with a thick layer of potato beef stew paste. They finished it all in less than 10 minutes.
It seemed to Sean that they had exerted a lot of effort at the yard, so they were probably very tired.
After lunch, once Freya Perez brought over a cup of tea, Sean lay back in his chair, feeling so content that he didn’t want to go off to inspect the house anymore.
Only after contemplating this for a while did Sean get up, say hello to Freya, and leave.
Jackson and his two younger brothers ran off to the yard after eating, with no consideration for any afternoon break.
Compared to most of their people back in Africa, this was a far cry from familiar.
Sean Knight drove his car, following the navigation to the old house.
Most properties here are single-story houses, with occasional two or three-story buildings. However, it was clear that these were all old houses.
In China’s real estate terminology, the location isn’t great. It’s not a commercial area so it has no commercial development value. Although it’s an old house, it doesn’t count as a cultural relic.
The courtyard looked rather shabby. Parked on either side of the entrance were several cars, presumably belonging to those with similar ideas to mine.
Inside the courtyard, there were some old pieces of furniture. It was unclear whether these were meant to be sold or discarded.
Sean Knight parked the car and walked into the yard.
There were already a few people in the yard. Some were checking the quality of the furniture, while others were discussing with the man who seemed to be the owner, a middle-aged white man.
Seeing Sean Knight come over, the middle-aged white man in his immaculately pressed suit said loudly:
"Are you here to see the items? Feel free to look around. If you see anything you like, we can discuss the price."
Sean Knight took a quick glance around before asking:
"Can we also see the inside of the house?"
"Of course. You can see everything. You can even buy the whole courtyard if you want!"
Sean Knight and the others all laughed.
This was a humorous host.
Looking around, most of the furniture was pretty ordinary. There were a couple of old cabinets that looked well-crafted, but someone was already examining them and asking about the price.
Sean did not interfere and casually walked inside.
Seeing so many people there competing, Sean wasn’t holding out much hope for finding something valuable on this visit.
There are plenty of people with a good eye these days.
The rooms inside the single-story house had been cleaned out. All the little household items had been taken away.
The wooden floor had been worn smooth, its original color completely faded.
Instinctively, Sean activated the Sky Eye.
There were no mezzanines, no secret rooms, nor any safes hidden in the walls.
Everything seemed normal. He even saw a termite nest under the study’s floor by the outer wall, full of busy ants.
A record player placed in the study looked interesting. Sean thought if he didn’t find anything else, he would take that with him.
The host came in and saw Sean inspecting the record player. He said,
"200 dollars. If you’re interested, you can take it."
Sean Knight nodded and said,
"Let me have another look around."
"Alright."
Someone outside yelled out, and the host left again.
Sean Knight turned to the bedroom. Besides an old wooden bed, there was nothing else.
Feeling somewhat disappointed, Sean moved to the kitchen.
The kitchenware had been cleared out. The wooden floorboards had broken in several places due to long term usage, barely held together with a patchwork of other wooden slats.
In the same area underneath the floor, were yet more termites busily munching away – huh?
Sean Knight was somewhat surprised. Underneath the kitchen wooden floor, there was a metal can the size of a soda can!
It was right in front of the gas stove, where people would typically stand.
And right next to this area, was where the wooden floor had broken!
Sean Knight started to get a bit excited!
But just as he was feeling this, the host came in again. Seeing Sean Knight standing by the gas stove, he began to explain:
"This stove has a history of 30 years! It’s very reliable, lights up with just a twist! If you are interested in it..."
"No, no, no!" Sean Knight shook his head, moving away from that spot. "I’m just having a look. I think that record player is better."
The host didn’t seem disappointed by Sean’s lack of interest in the stove, and, still smiling, he responded:
"Hmm, a young man with good taste! If it were me, I’d also choose the record player!"
23. Someone outside called out again, and the host left once more.
Sean was torn – should he dig up that can?
Using Sky Eye to check outside, he saw that the host was busy discussing prices with another person. He quickly slipped back into the kitchen, took out a knife, and began to pry up the wooden floor!
The decaying floorboards were surprisingly difficult to lift!
While prying, he used Sky Eye to monitor the situation outside.
Out of nervousness, he broke out into a light sweat!
Finally, he managed to lift off the board lying directly over the metal can, revealing the hard earth beneath.
Thankfully it wasn’t cement!
He then used the knife to dig into the earth. But before long, the metal can was exposed!
Sean turned his head and saw that the host was returning from discussing prices with another customer and was once again walking back into the house!
His heart was beating so fast it felt like it was about to leap out of his chest!
He quickly grabbed the can and tried to pull it out!
But the can was firmly pressed into the hard earth around it. Sean Knight didn’t know what to do, so he tried to pry it out with his knife again!
Looking on as the host reached the door and walked into the house, his heart was in his throat!
In Sean’s current situation, even if he got the can out, he would not have enough time to replace the floorboard!
What should he do?
