Chapter 967: Chapter 534: Bastard Wants to Kill the Donkey after Grinding?_3
"Okay, put the box here and load the gold bars into our backpacks," Sean Knight said. "Let’s go take a look elsewhere; there might be other findings."
Several people quickly disassembled the box and packed the gold into their backpacks. Ten minutes later, the box was back in place, and they had left the cave.
"Come with me and check out this way." Sean Knight scanned another hidden fluorescence mark and said, "We’ve spent our day in here. Isn’t this much better than digging that mountain cave?"
"That’s true," Douglas Cooper joked as he scouted ahead. "To have the Americans working for us, even if we find nothing, that’s enough to brag about!"
"Exactly, not many can boast of such treatment!" Elijah Hastings followed up with a joke.
The road to follow was a gradual ascent, and Sean Knight was beginning to suspect that following these hidden trail markers might lead them out through another cave entrance.
But as they advanced, the moisture in the air grew heavier, a dampness that seemed to slowly envelop them.
After passing seven or eight forks in the road, the path ahead began to descend. Into the one-person-tall mountain cave they walked, thirty meters or so, before the view widened before them.
In front of them was a massive subterranean space, about the size of two basketball courts. In the middle of this natural underground hall was a subterranean lake covering roughly 100 square meters.
A surge of cold, damp air hit their faces.
"Wow, this water is quite chilly!" Douglas Cooper went to the water’s edge and squatted to feel the water, exclaiming:
"It feels nearly zero degrees!"
Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington also came forward to feel the water and nodded in agreement.
Sean Knight surveyed the surroundings of the underground hall and noticed two more cave entrances.
One of the entrances was marked with an arrow indicating a way out; the other was crossed out.
His gaze then shifted toward the lake surface.
In the strong light of the high-lumen flashlight, the lake water displayed a deep green color, the bottom invisible to the eye.
"The water’s too deep and too cold; there shouldn’t be anything in there," Douglas Cooper surmised after circling the pool with his flashlight.
Sean Knight was about to speak when suddenly the ground shook violently, followed by the sound of an explosion and hurried gunshots coming from the cave entrance.
"There’s a battle outside!" Elijah Hastings quickly assessed. "It might be the tribal residents fighting with others!"
"Boss, you stay here; We’ll go and have a look!" Douglas Cooper suggested, flashlight in one hand, rifle in the other.
"All of you go up, it’s quite safe here!" Sean Knight said. "If it’s outsiders clashing with the Tribe, see clearly who they are. If it’s unrelated to us, then help the tribal residents, at least ensure Principal Miller’s safety!"
"Okay, you be careful here then!"
Elijah Hastings said, and then he, along with Douglas Cooper and Lincoln Harrington, made their way up.
As they ascended, there was no need for guidance; following the sounds alone would lead them to the right path.
Sean Knight watched them head toward the entrance with the arrow and knew they were going the right way, so he didn’t bother to remind them.
He then laughed, looking at the empty hall.
Approaching the pond edge, Sean Knight squatted to touch the water, feeling the temperature—it was indeed particularly cool.
But for someone of his constitution, this was nothing remarkable.
After pondering for a moment, Sean Knight took a long pole with a hook from his spatial realm and probed into the water, stirring it, then slowly began to lift it up.
Hanging on the hook was a rope about three centimeters in diameter, stretched taut, indicating one end was tied to something underwater, the other end weighted by something quite heavy.
Sean Knight slowly pulled up the rope. With the buoyancy of the water, the object tied to the other end of the rope was quickly raised.
It was a fully sealed iron box approximately sixty centimeters in length and width.
Sean didn’t open the box; instead, he detached it and stowed it in his spatial realm before tossing the rope back into the water.
Following the same method, Sean pulled up twenty-eight similar iron boxes from all over the lake surface.
With the enhancement of Sky Eye, he knew that everything inside was either treasure or worth money!
As he dropped the last rope onto the lake surface and watched the ripples slowly return to calm, Sean nodded in satisfaction, shook the water droplets from his hands, and turned to walk back up.
The time rewinds to the moment just before the explosion, where Elder Hassan had arranged for more than two hundred tribal residents to move everything from the mountain cave outside. He left about a dozen people to reseal the cave entrance.
The remaining people started to divide the labor and planned to transport all the supplies back in one go.
For safety, Elder Hassan also organized twenty tribal residents armed with guns to observe and keep watch around the team.
Clarence Hughes, who had accounted for the quantity of the supplies, held a gun and walked in the middle of the team.
He had specifically asked Elder Hassan for this gun.
In his country, besides military training at university, there was almost no chance to handle guns.
Now, with a pile of such things in front of him available for use, it was impossible not to be tempted.
The tribal residents cared a lot about the ownership of the guns, but Elder Hassan didn’t think Clarence’s request for a gun was unreasonable. After all, part of the supplies belonged to Clarence, as clearly stated in the agreement.
After assigning a tribal resident to give Clarence a brief training on how to use the gun, Elder Hassan gave him a brand-new automatic rifle to "play" with.
Yes, play.
Elder Hassan believed that it was perfectly normal for a man to play with guns.
He had a lot more to deal with and had no time to mind these things.
Fortunately, it seemed that Elder Kaman was relatively honest during this period and had made no requests to make phone calls.
The team transporting supplies moved forward slowly, and their path was nearing the mountain cave that Sean and his team had surveyed.
During a brief rest for the team, a shrill whistling sound suddenly came from afar, followed by a mortar shell visibly arcing through the air and crashing down!
The moment the shell hit the ground, no one near the point of impact could dodge in time, and instantly seven or eight people were flung to the ground, their flesh torn and scattered!
Several others nearby were struck by shrapnel, bleeding profusely!
Clarence was only about thirty meters from the impact point; he watched in horror as someone nearby was blown to bits by the shell, flesh and blood flying everywhere!
Clarence was frozen on the spot!
"Find some cover quickly! Those with guns, go towards the northeast; that’s where the shell came from!"
Elder Hassan, on the edge of the team, reacted the fastest and immediately issued an order!
The residents, who had been in a panic, reflexively followed the instructions; some searched for places to hide, and others armed with guns chased in the direction from which the mortar had been fired!
Clarence, as if waking from a nightmare, numbly held his gun and rushed forward with the team.
"Principal Miller, stay here, don’t go over there!" said the resident instructed by Elder Hassan to protect Clarence, speaking quickly, "Combat is our business. It’s safer for you here!"
After saying that, the resident rushed forward with his gun.
However, the young man didn’t get far before he was caught in a hail of bullets from the opposite mountain and fell, his body trembling.
Watching the young man who had just been speaking to him now lying there, his body mangled, Clarence began to tremble!
At that moment, he desperately wanted to return home, even though the school was in a tough condition, at least it was safe!
At that moment, he also vividly felt the meaning of "Better to be a dog in a peaceful time than a person in a chaotic world."
