Chapter 952: Chapter 529: A Man Will Be a Teenager Until His Death!_3
After all, to be honest, if someone hid something near their home, they would undoubtedly leave some clue no matter what.
So Clarence Hughes did not totally dismiss the idea that this might be a trap.
But with years of friendship with Hassan, who knew Clarence was penniless - honestly, just the rings on Hassan’s fingers were worth more than all of Clarence’s possessions.
Therefore, it was unlikely Hassan was after anything from him.
When Clarence visited the mountainous area where Hassan’s tribe lived, he understood why they couldn’t find it.
For hundreds of kilometers around, the land was composed of the kind of soil that scarce grass grew on, with low mountains, just trenches and earth caves, somewhat similar to the Loess Plateau.
There were only about a dozen villages within hundreds of kilometers, with distances ranging from a few to tens of kilometers between them.
It truly lived up to the phrase "vast and sparsely populated."
The area around the Lighthouse Nation’s base had been heavily excavated, but this base was quite distant from both cities and villages, mainly relying on transport aircraft for deliveries of supplies.
There were many car tracks around, but according to Hassan, they had searched everywhere without finding where those supplies had been transported - by the time they reached the base, there were only a pitiful few pieces of large equipment and a small amount of supplies left.
Clarence looked around nearby. Although he had stayed in New South Tower County for a few years, he certainly wasn’t an expert and not even as knowledgeable as the locals, so he wasn’t likely to find anything.
So he had no choice but to return with a batch of pine nuts.
However, pine nuts weren’t really produced in Hassan’s tribe’s area, and since they were hand-shelled, the yield was rather low, so it wasn’t likely to become a lucrative business.
Then he thought of consulting an expert.
Actually, Clarence had also sought out locals in New South to try their luck, to no avail.
After wasting quite a bit of money on travel, Clarence decided to consult a real expert, and that’s when Sean Knight came into his field of vision.
Unfortunately, he didn’t know him and was unable to get in touch.
This time, during his visit home, he mentioned this issue while meeting with Howard Richardson and, unexpectedly, discovered that Howard knew Sean, who was also in Ocean City at the time, which led to this meeting.
After finishing his story, Clarence had also finished his milk tea. He didn’t brew another for himself but pushed his bowl aside, took out his mobile phone, adjusted it, and handed it to Sean.
"Mr. Knight, you can look at this, the documents Hassan sent me."
Sean looked at the worn mobile phone, took it, shielded the light with his left hand, and scrolled with his right.
There were quite a few photos and some videos, all featuring American Hercules Transport Aircraft landing and unloading equipment.
The equipment was mostly in boxes, and from a distance, the supplies piled up like a mountain.
Based on the details around the edges, Sean could tell that indeed the airport was situated in a mountainous area, and from different angles, one could deduce by comparison that there really weren’t any villages nearby, let alone a city.
Opening Sky Eye, Sean could tell that the photos and videos hadn’t been edited; they were original.
Handing the mobile phone back to Clarence, Sean looked at him and saw a hopeful expression in his eyes.
Sean thought for a moment and said,
"I can invest some money in your school to help resolve the difficulties you’re currently facing - I could also directly establish a fund for your county, where every college student who participates in the ’Three Supports and One Assistance’ program could receive additional subsidies..."
Clarence’s eyes lit up, then dimmed again,
"So you mean, Mr. Knight, that you won’t get involved with this matter?"
He raised the mobile phone slightly.
Sean thought for a moment and said,
"Actually, I am somewhat interested, but to be honest, not very much. Those supplies might be quite valuable to you, but to me, they really aren’t worth much.
I don’t think it’s necessary to make a trip to a remote mountain to search for some military supplies... Actually, by doing this, you could save quite a lot of time, couldn’t you?"
"Thank you for your generosity, Mr. Knight..." Clarence took a deep breath, regaining his composure as he spoke.
"Actually, I should be thanking you. I’m from Xinjiang, and still, you, an outsider, have done more for Xinjiang than I have," Sean said, feeling somewhat emotional too.
He could see that Clarence wouldn’t give up, and couldn’t help but ask,
"Is finding that base’s supplies really that important to you?"
"Exactly!" Howard actually didn’t approve of them going there, as that place was notorious for being dangerous, "Now that Sean is willing to fund you, you don’t have to go at all. Rest assured, Sean has plenty of money and doesn’t care about these things; once he decides to help, it will definitely be more than you can imagine!"
"I..." Clarence thought for a moment and said, "You might call me pretentious, or say I have a low price, or that I lack gratitude.
But, I promised my students that I would personally earn the money to keep their teachers - I just can’t let it go."
He looked at Sean, his expression calm, but beneath it was a sense of discontent:
"Mr. Knight, I truly appreciate your sentiment, but I just can’t let it go. I still want to find that base, those supplies..."
For a split-second, Sean understood Clarence’s persistence.
It had nothing to do with wealth, yet it was all about a man’s pride, goals, ambitions, and promises.
Men may die for ideals, and sometimes, a man’s idealism can be stubborn indeed.
"Well then, I might not be planning to go, but I do have a few friends who I could recommend to join you," Sean said after thinking it over,
"They are former Special Forces Soldiers who have worked in the Xinjiang mountains, and they have more experience than I do; you could go there together with them."
In fact, Sean had only thought of Douglas Cooper.
Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington already had their own plans, but Douglas currently did not.
He didn’t want to return home, and the person he was dating couldn’t be with him all the time.
Sean felt that Clarence was trustworthy enough, and if Douglas went with him, there likely wouldn’t be any problems.
"Good!" Clarence was obviously aware of Sean’s "friends," and although slightly disappointed, for someone who had just had a first conversation with him to be willing to cooperate was already a sincere gesture.
"Principal Miller, you can also rest assured, I really do intend to follow through with that fund!"
