Chapter 86: Chapter 86: Resentment from the Joseph Family!
Harry Joseph’s fixation was to find the hidden treasure left by his grandfather.
However, after two generations of effort, they’ve achieved next to nothing.
His grandfather’s exit was too abrupt to reveal to his family where the treasures were hidden.
Fortunately, Mr. Joseph had already converted some of the treasure into tangible assets by that time. Thus, ensuring everyone in Joseph’s home could sustain their livelihoods.
Gradually, most people ceased to yearn for the treasures. Only Harry, having heard about them from his grandfather as a kid, still yearned for them.
After experiencing multiple instances of hopes turning into disappointments and returning empty-handed, he started thinking of alternative approaches.
He decided to advertise and invite treasure hunters to join!
Such practices are not uncommon. There are many similar lost treasure tales in the Beautiful Country. Many officers who returned from the Eurasian battlefield brought back treasures.
However, where these treasures ended up eventually, nobody knows.
Having convinced other family members, Harry started implementing his plan.
Simultaneously, he was also consistently improving his treasure map.
When this plan brought in several tens of thousands of dollars for the family in the first year, other family members praised Harry for his cleverness.
However, in Harry’s mind, he was still fixated on the real treasure!
He believed that the treasure his grandfather left must be worth significantly more!
So, when Clement, a distant relative of the Joseph family who was entrusted with guarding the manor, called Harry, joyously declaring they found the treasures, Harry was ecstatic!
Although Clement vividly described his efforts in securing more benefits for the Joseph Family, Harry didn’t agree with his actions.
However, when he heard that the individual who found the treasure was Chinese, Harry decided it didn’t matter.
Having verified that there truly were treasures in the manor, his next step is to verify the accuracy of his treasure map!
His treasure map was compiled based on his grandfather’s conversation records and information found in various notes.
Among which was the sluice gate spot!
However, there were dozens of spots he had collected on his map. After checking a few of them and finding no treasures, he had given up.
But now, he felt hopeful again!
Harry intended to unbury the treasures himself!
However, when he shared his plan with other family members, they did not support it.
One of his uncles advised him,
"If you truly unbury the treasure, treasure hunters will no longer visit our manor. Such would result in the loss of a stable source of income!"
"As compared to an uncertain quantity of treasure, we prefer a dependable income source. It might not be a lot, but at least it’s guaranteed every year!"
Other family members echoed this sentiment, leaving Harry feeling helpless.
The developments over the next few days, however, solidified Harry’s determination.
After young treasure hunters confirmed Sean Knight’s statement at the entrance of the manor, news quickly spread in the treasure hunter circle.
The next day, fewer treasure hunters visited the Joseph’s Estate.
Mainly because many felt it was futile to visit since the treasure was already unburied.
Afterall, there were other places in New York to search for treasures.
Secondly, this incident tarnished the Joseph Family’s reputation.
No one wants their hard-earned treasure to be plundered - especially outside the agreed terms.
Clement’s short-sightedness caused a huge loss to the Joseph Family!
In the next few days, fewer and fewer treasure hunters visited the estate, sometimes only one, and sometimes none at all!
After getting into a fight with Sean Knight, George Thomas regretted his actions a little bit. He continuously tried to contact Sean to make amends, but Sean refused to answer his calls.
News from the circle also reached George’s ears. He immediately blamed the incident on the Joseph Family’s breach of trust.
Although George Thomas was not great at treasure hunting, he was a veteran in the circle. He harshly condemned the Joseph family, and the news spread instantly.
After that, no treasure hunters visited Joseph’s estate!
When members of the Joseph family understood the truth, they scolded Clement harshly and fired him. But the incident had already happened and was beyond repair.
Harry Joseph felt that he had done justice to the Chinese man. After all, the person had been fired.
But he underestimated the importance of credit to a treasure hunter. Those in the circle were boycotting the Joseph family not because they wanted to vindicate Sean Knight, but because they believed such actions were inappropriate.
They did not want such a situation to happen to them in the future.
Therefore, the remedial measures taken by the Joseph family had little effect.
With no one coming, the manor had no income. Since no one was willing to live here originally, Harry Joseph decided to start his excavation plan!
In his heart, all the treasures belong to his family! What Clement did--giving half of the gold to the Chinese man-- was already adequate payment!
So this time, he invited Clement to help with the excavation as compensation.
Harry promised Clement that 10% of the treasure that was excavated would be his.
Obviously, Clement was overjoyed!
He excitedly said:
"Harry, I believe we will surely find the treasure!"
Harry began to dig in the manor with Clement, one spot at a time.
There was nothing in the first three spots. Harry was fine, but Clement was a bit disheartened.
When they arrived at the fourth spot, Harry was about to start digging, but Clement stopped him:
"Harry, this spot has already been dug."
Clement, being here every day, knew better about the dug spots than Harry.
Harry took a closer look, indeed there were signs of digging.
He felt slightly dejected and in anger, he thrust his iron shovel into the ground.
Then his face changed!
There was something hard underneath!
It didn’t seem like a stone!
Harry quickly dug again and shoveled out a decayed wooden box!
The box had been damaged and the contents were gone.
However, Harry knew that there must have been treasures in it!
But they were taken away by someone!
"Fuck! It was dug up by someone!" Harry was furious!
Clement was also stunned. When did this happen? He didn’t see it! If someone had dug something out, he should have been able to observe—at least the manor was not that large.
After Harry cursed for a while, his emotions stabilized, and he asked:
"Clement, can you tell when this was digested?"
Investigation, this matter must be investigated!
"About one or two days!" Clement turned over the soil in the pit with the iron shovel, "It should not exceed three days."
"Check! You must find out who has been to the manor in the past three days!" Harry said through gritted teeth, "We must get back the treasures that belong to the Joseph family!"
Clement was also very angry, he had a share in it!
"I’ll get the contract, it has the information!"
Clement quickly brought a stack of contracts to Harry:
"These are the people who signed contracts here within two days, let’s check them one by one!"
