Chapter 693: Chapter 440: Surprises and Scares_2
Sean Knight slowly descended into the deep pit, where there were quite a few footprints of wild animals, which made it easier for them to go down.
Just as they were about to reach the bottom of the pit, Sean edged sideways and then went into a relatively concealed cave on the side.
"This place used to be a nest for crocodiles, or something similar," Sean said as he bent down and touched the ground, "but later on, the river channel probably dried up and the crocodiles either moved away or escaped, leaving this place empty."
Elijah Hastings and Douglas Cooper immediately followed suit.
"There’s... nothing to see here!"
Douglas looked around, the hole slanted downwards, about two meters deep and one and a half meters high. It smelled foul, but there was nothing else.
"Don’t worry, just wait and see!" Sean smiled, then walked to the bottom of the pit. Suddenly, he stomped hard on the ground.
With that stomp, a hollow place appeared under Sean’s feet, and he and the soil beneath him fell down together!
Elijah and Douglas were taken aback!
They immediately ran to the edge of the pit to look down.
"I’m fine, you guys can come down too!"
At the bottom of the pit, about three or four meters below their feet, Sean was standing on the bank of the underground river, waving at them:
"Come down, let’s go find Lincoln Harrington!"
Elijah and Douglas jumped down without hesitation.
After the three went down, Sean looked around and said:
"Lincoln probably hasn’t come this far, let’s go back!"
"Alright!"
They went back along the underground river, and at this point, the noise on this side had attracted some attention.
Some people immediately ran towards this place, they accurately reached the edge of the deep pit, but found that there was no movement in the water.
After illuminating the area with their flashlights for a while and finding nothing, those people finally left.
The river channel of the underground river was more than two meters high, and the top was quite humid, with water droplets falling from time to time.
There were some footholds on both sides that were slightly wider than the underground river, so they had a place to stand.
However, not all places were like this, especially where the water was rapid; the river water almost occupied the entire surface, so the three of them had to wade through the water.
"Huh?"
Sean suddenly bent down and picked up a golden coin from the water.
"There are gold coins in here too? What’s the origin of this underground river?"
Douglas and Elijah were in high spirits now.
As long as the environment in the underground river wasn’t too harsh, they believed that Lincoln could survive inside.
After all, from what they could see now, there were no particularly fierce animals in the underground river, and the water was drinkable.
So they relaxed and became curious about Sean finding a gold coin.
"I guess, the source of this underground river, or somewhere along it, is related to that treasure?" Sean said his thoughts, "After all, it’s relatively close to the treasure now..."
If it had been a gold nugget, it would have been easier to understand, indicating that there was a gold mine upstream of the underground river.
But now it was a gold coin, which was obviously a product of casting. This could only explain one reason: there was a source of gold coins upstream.
"Let’s not think too much about it now and find Lincoln first," Sean continued. "Once we find him, we won’t go up right away. We’ll follow the river upstream, and maybe we’ll get to the treasure first."
Elijah and Douglas smiled, as this would naturally be the best situation.
The three of them quickly moved forward.
"What? There are fish in here?" Sean bent down again; this time, he picked up a palm-sized fish.
The fish was semi-transparent, with white eyes and no pupils. It was unclear whether it was a deformity or whether it had evolved due to being in the underground river and deprived of sunlight.
Since there were fish, it meant there was a food source, so Lincoln wouldn’t be hungry if he was below.
With air, water, and fish – survival was basically not an issue for Lincoln anymore.
The hearts of the three, half suspended, finally fell into place.
"Another gold coin!" Within a few steps, Sean picked up another gold coin from the edge of the river channel.
The river water was a bit turbid, and Douglas and Elijah couldn’t see anything underwater. They attributed Sean’s findings to his better eyesight than theirs.
It made sense since Sean had absorbed much more energy than them.
After a long while, Sean didn’t find anything else.
The river channel gradually widened, and the water depth also increased slowly. Sean found that along the way, several small tributaries had joined this underground river.
He guessed that there might be other springs in the desert oases.
This place was not really barren; life had just been covered by the sands.
The three of them had strength far beyond normal people. As they moved forward, even eating was done on the go.
After about two hours, they saw a place where the water was rushing rapidly ahead.
There had been a place like this before – where the rumbling noise came from.
However, the water there was at most over a meter deep, and they could just wade through. But here, it was almost like a cliff, with the water rushing straight down.
There was likely a water pit underneath that had already been formed by the rushing water, so there was no loud noise.
But looking at this water pit, Sean figured it must be at least three meters deep!
Both sides were extremely narrow, with only about ten centimeters to step on. If they didn’t step carefully, they would fall into the deep pit.
It wasn’t dangerous, per se. It was just that if they fell in, they would be quite embarrassed.
"You guys follow me!" Sean went ahead, "Don’t step in the wrong place, or you’ll fall in and everything will get wet!"
Sean slowly stepped on the rocks at the edge of the river channel, then leaped forward with all his might.
He jumped more than three meters away and landed directly in the water of the downstream river channel – the edge here was 20-30 centimeters deep which was acceptable.
