Chapter 659: Chapter 425: The Airport is Built, The Mad Demon Retreats_2
"Although we can’t double the local labor wage right from the start, one and a half times is doable. But we do have a strict management system."
"No problem at all!" Antony Carter agreed briskly.
And thus the matter was happily settled.
Having a weight lifted off his heart, Sean Knight enjoyed the barbecue immensely that evening.
The next day, he drove his off-road vehicle from the campsite and joined Elijah Hastings on a trip to Ulan Bator, then transferred to Jakarta, and finally arrived at Big Island.
The workers from the construction company had called to report that the airport was completed!
Indeed, they were infrastructure-building maniacs!
There were even more people on Big Island than before.
Sean Knight, along with Elijah Hastings, arrived at the port. As soon as they disembarked from the yacht, they saw Craig Davis waiting to greet them.
"Mr. Davis, I feel a bit embarrassed having you come to greet me personally!" Sean Knight joked.
"What’s there to be embarrassed about? You are a significant client, it’s a matter of course for us to greet you. I’m the one who should be embarrassed; you trust me so unconditionally."
Both men laughed and joked as they got onto the electric vehicle.
The island’s fleet of electric vehicles had been updated.
Sean Knight remembered his last visit, Lana Brown had made a comment about the existing electric vehicles used in domestic parks; not only was their battery life poor, but they were of no use at all out here when the sea breeze blew.
Sean Knight decisively asked her to purchase a batch from domestic suppliers.
He didn’t expect them to be in use so quickly.
Now they were riding in a business electric vehicle produced by Factory B in China.
Also at the port, Sean Knight saw electric minibusses and electric SUVs.
He even saw guests driving their own cars around the island - Sean Knight guessed that Lana Brown might have added a car rental service.
After all, some people find it more comfortable to drive around by themselves.
"Our airport was built according to your requirements, equipped with three hangars, one main runway and one auxiliary one. The runways are long enough to accommodate the large passenger aircraft commonly used worldwide."
Sean Knight nodded, quite satisfied.
Mr. Davis found it astounding. What kind of setup was this? Some regional airports in the country didn’t even have runways this long, right? Many small airports could only accommodate regional passenger planes!
"I plan to purchase a Gulfstream 5 and another large passenger aircraft, like a 747."
Sean Knight remarked.
"I can’t offer any advice on that matter." Mr. Davis shook his head, "It’s not my expertise. But rest assured, we had professional personnel oversee and inspect the construction of the airport, which is entirely up to standard."
Sean Knight nodded in acknowledgement.
When they drove close to the airport, Sean Knight noticed that the whole compound was enclosed by three-meter-high iron wire mesh.
Only then did he realise that he had overlooked this point.
Big Island was designated as a tourist zone, but there were areas tourists shouldn’t be allowed to enter. Sean hadn’t communicated this to Lana Brown or Mr. Davis in their previous discussions, but now he noticed the strategic placement of the wire mesh fences, quite a thoughtful measure!
"Miss Brown suggested the installation of this wire mesh fence; we thought it was a good idea." Noticing Sean Knight looking at the wire mesh, Mr. Davis commented:
"After all, tourists come from all walks of life. It’s better not to let them access certain areas."
"Exactly, quite thoughtful indeed." Sean Knight nodded in agreement, "I didn’t even think of it before."
"Not just here, but also the mining area, villa district, and other places that should be enclosed have been fenced in. The port and the beach zones designated for tourists are public areas, which are equipped with inns, shopping streets. They basically satisfy all the needs of the tourists."
The airport has a gate. When the car arrives at the gate, the automatic recognition system identifies the make and license plate of the car, then automatically opens.
"The system is very advanced; if a car is not registered in the system, the gate will not open. In addition, the razor wire at the top of the fence can prevent ordinary people from climbing over, effectively ensuring that the airport is undisturbed."
"Very good, very good!" Sean Knight said as he entered the airport area. He saw that it was indeed well constructed. The grass on the green belt had grown, and the long runway was quite comforting. The hangar and apron were not large, but they were enough for him.
"Very good, perfect, actually. I mean, I am very satisfied." After taking a look around, Sean Knight didn’t feel the need to examine anything else.
"I am a layman, as long as you hired professionals for the work inspection, then I am relieved."
Sean Knight’s actions surprised Craig Davis, but it was something he expected. Without an airplane, there’s not much to see at the airport anyway.
"Mr. Knight, up until now, on the whole island, we’ve completed everything from the initial mountain excavations, land leveling, villa construction, infrastructure development, airport and port establishment, to the current construction of tourist facilities, hotels, and commercial streets. The primary construction tasks have been completed.
Our main personnel will soon be gradually withdrawing, leaving a portion of the staff to wrap up."
Sean Knight was momentarily stunned, realizing that it’s almost been a year since he bought the island.
How much could be done in a year in other countries?
A bridge in New York required maintenance due to long-term wear and tear. The state made a budget for a two-year timeline.
Two years later, the state announced that it would need another two years.
Another two years later, the state simply stopped announcing a completion date for the renovations, and to this date, the bridge is still under repair.
However, in China, a bridge in the suburbs of the capital that was half the size of the one in New York needed its main material to be replaced due to traffic issues, a process not far off from full reconstruction.
From the start of the reconstruction to when it became operational, it only took forty-three hours!
This was something Sean Knight had learned from Mr. John in a casual conversation.
Only then did Sean realize that Mr. John not only polished glasses and served drinks but also took great interest in international affairs.
Sean felt proud when he heard the story, thinking that the title of "Infrastructure Demon" wasn’t given lightly.
It wasn’t until it was applied to his own project, however, that he truly understood the speed of the "Infrastructure Demon"!
A massive island was "cut" in the middle, with an airport, hotel, commercial street, villa, port, and other infrastructure built on top. Roads were constructed all over and around the island.
All of it was completed in less than a year!
How could one not admire such a speed?
Sitting in the car, Sean Knight listened to Craig Davis describing these completed facilities.
The island now had accessible roads everywhere, with signs set up at every intersection near the port, beach, villa, and hotel.
Even places off-limits to tourists were clearly marked.
From time to time, he would see buses carrying tourists and electric vehicles rented by tourists shuttling on the roads.
The double lanes didn’t seem overcrowded, and Sean even spotted cows and sheep around some lawns.
"Those were introduced from domestic sources for grazing, as Miss Brown suggested."
Sean Knight nodded. The island initially didn’t have any large animals, so introducing some cows and sheep wasn’t a bad idea.
When the car arrived at the previous location of the Engineering Command Division, he noticed that many of the mobile board rooms had been dismantled. The few that remained had an air of loneliness.
"We built a new villa district with six villas and single-story houses. There’s a professional interior design company working on them now." Craig Davis moved Sean to the residential area, joking,
"This is where you, the Island Master, will live."
It was also fenced with iron wire mesh. Sean saw tourist cars parked near the front gate, with people getting out to peek inside with curiosity.
After their car arrived, the front gate automatically opened. As people rushed back into their cars trying to follow in, the gate closed.
Despite shouts from behind, no one paid any attention.
After all, the front gate clearly stated "Private Property, No Sightseeing," which they couldn’t have missed.
"The mesh fence around the mining area is even higher than here, with more stringent security measures," Craig Davis finally said. "News of the gold mine has been leaked, and many people want to sneak in, so we’ve strengthened the management significantly."
Sean nodded, this was to be expected.
"Well, my job here is pretty much complete. Whenever I visit in the future, I’ll just be here for the vacation."
"You’ll have to visit often," Sean said with a smile, "Coming here as a tourist to see the island you’ve directed to construct personally would definitely be a proud moment!"
"Of course! But I’m afraid you might not welcome me then!"
"How could that be possible? You’re welcome anytime!"
