Chapter 657: Chapter 424: Leave the Professional Things to the Professionals_2
The two people drinking heard this name, put down their wine glasses, and looked at Sean Knight.
The woman also looked at Sean Knight curiously, and then picked up the phone and dialed a number.
Sean Knight was quite surprised, being able to get in touch with Antony Carter on his first phone call. It goes to show that Antony Carter had considerable clout in this place!
The woman spoke a few words on the phone, and then hung up, telling Sean Knight to wait.
The shop’s room was small and had a peculiar smell, so Sean Knight signaled to the woman that he would wait outside.
He passed a cigarette to Elijah Hastings, but Sean Knight himself didn’t smoke.
Elijah Hastings waved his hand and said,
"I quit."
"What do you mean? Are you planning to have a child?"
Sean Knight remembered Elijah Hastings used to smoke.
"No, it’s just that ever since I absorbed those energy, I felt a revulsion to cigarettes. I don’t want to smoke anymore."
"Amazing indeed, can this thing also kick the smoking habit?" Sean Knight was somewhat amused.
At that moment, a man in his thirties approached them.
"Where do you guys come from?" The man asked, "Are you here for tourism? Looking for someone?"
The man spoke in English, which they understood.
The man looked fairly ordinary, but Sean Knight, who had hung around Port New York for the greater part of the year, could clearly discern the slick aura coming off him.
This guy must be a local scoundrel—or perhaps he profits off the foreigners. His ability to speak proper English was essential for his survival.
"Do you have something to say?"
"I can help you." The man said confidently, "You can see it yourself, local people hardly speak English, you can’t communicate with them. Only I can help you."
"What can you help me with?" Sean Knight counter-questioned.
"What do you need? Food? Water? Specialties? Or..."
The man gave Sean Knight a meaningful look, "Women?"
"No no no, I don’t need any of that."
Sean Knight didn’t want to deal with this man, but the man thought of it as a rare lucrative business opportunity and was unwilling to let it go.
Elijah Hastings shoved this man away, glaring at him, gesturing him to keep his distance.
The man could tell that Elijah Hastings wouldn’t be an easy pushover, but his curiosity and determination to close this deal only intensified.
Anybody who could afford a bodyguard surely must be a rich man!
Just as the man was about to pounce on them again, another man drove up on a motorcycle.
Upon closer look, Sean Knight felt a bit disappointed, it wasn’t Antony Carter.
This man parked his motorcycle in front of the shop, looked at Sean Knight and the others, and suddenly asked in Chinese:
"Are you looking for Antony Carter?"
"Yes." Sean Knight replied, "I’ve met Antony Carter before, when he was hunting. Now, I’ve got some important matters to discuss with him."
Although the person that came was not Antony Carter, at least they could communicate normally. Thus, Sean Knight didn’t feel too disappointed.
"Can you tell what it is about?"
"No, it must be discussed face to face." Sean Knight waved him off.
The other man didn’t insist, he pulled out a mobile phone and dialed a number.
After saying a few words, he handed the phone to Sean Knight.
Sean Knight took over the phone, hearing the person on the end inquiring:
"Who are you?"
"When you were hunting the Yellow Sheep, you gave me one. Do you remember?"
"I remember, what about it? Is the mutton not tasty?"
Sean Knight could tell from the voice that it was indeed Antony Carter on the other end.
"I have a matter to discuss with you."
"What’s the matter? Tell me."
"I can’t discuss it over the phone, can you come to the town? Or we could make an appointment."
"I’m dealing with the Yellow Sheep right now, don’t have the time to come over—"
"In that case, could you tell me where you are? I will come to you."
"You’re coming here? You dare to? Well, let the owner of this phone take you here!"
Antony Carter also didn’t expect Sean Knight to be so audacious.
Sean Knight handed the phone back to the young man on the motorcycle, who took the call and spoke a few words.
At this moment, the slick man chimed in:
"If you had told me earlier you were looking for Antony Carter, I could have helped you!"
Then he leaned over and whispered:
"Take me along, I can help you negotiate... It would be much more convenient than going by yourselves!"
Elijah Hastings shoved him away. The man was really annoyed and yelled at Elijah:
"What’s the matter with you? I’m here to do business with your boss, what’s it to you?"
Elijah didn’t say much but lifted his shirt to reveal his pistol.
The man was immediately scared off and ran away!
"I’ll go ahead, you follow me!"
The young man preparing to leave on his motorcycle when the lady boss of the shop ran out, handed the young man a bag and said a few words to him.
The young man seemed somewhat impatient, promised something, and the lady boss playfully hit him before watching him chase off.
Sean Knight got in the car and Elijah started the car following the motorcycle.
The motorcycle left the small town, heading south. After about five or six kilometers, it turned off the main road and drove towards the mountains on the Gobi desert .
The off-road vehicle closely followed the motorcycle, raising clouds of dust along the way.
"Boss, there shouldn’t be any problems, should there?"
"Don’t worry, there shouldn’t be." Sean Knight smiled, "Besides, we both have guns, so we should at least be able to get out safely."
After half an hour of driving, just before reaching the foot of the mountain, the motorcycle stopped near a patch of shrubbery.
The off-road vehicle stopped about thirty or forty meters from the motorcycle.
Sean Knight had already seen a somewhat flat area next to the shrubbery where Antony Carter and his men were peeling sheepskin and handling mutton.
When he saw Sean Knight approach, Antony Carter put aside his skinning knife, pulled over a sheepskin to wipe the fat from his hands, and then walked over to him.
"What do you want to talk about?"
"There’s going to be a new gold mine here. I want you to be the security guard captain."
Sean knew that it was not a time to beat about the bush, so he got directly to the point. "The wages will definitely be higher than what you currently earn from hunting for sure, and you can bring a few people in."
"A gold mine?" Antony Carter seemed surprised, "There’s a gold mine here?"
"Yes." Sean pointed at the mountain, "It’s right inside the mountain."
"Are you here to open the mine?" Antony’s face changed slightly as he asked.
"No, I’m just here to show someone. Someone else will run the mine." Sean shook his head.
Antony thought for a moment and asked:
"You have the power to make these decisions?"
The smell of the mutton attracted a swarm of flies and wasps. Sean waved to chase away a wasp trying to land on him and said:
"Yes. I can definitely make the decision about hiring a security guard captain."
"Why did you choose me?" Antony seemed more cautious about this news, "We’ve only met once."
"Well, because you have connections here." Sean laid his cards on the table, "The purpose of opening a gold mine is to make money, and we intend to hire some locals as workers. We also hope that local people can manage security.
The mine wants to make a profit, not cause trouble. You being the security guard captain would at least balance this relationship. Actually, it’s good for you too - if you hadn’t given me a sheep today, I wouldn’t have thought to offer you this."
As for the manpower, Sean had other options amongst the people he had met on his last visit,
However, to choose a leader for the security team, someone from the local population was definitely not enough.
"I need to think about it..." Antony hesitated.
Truth be told, he had a broad network and an obvious sense of loyalty, which was evident from delivering a sheep to Sean first thing in the morning.
Of course, a sheep here isn’t worth much. No matter how precious it is, it’s useless if it can’t be transported out.
While they were talking, the men who were with Antony nearby were watching everything attentively.
Observing their clothing and complexion, Sean thought for a moment before saying:
"Think about it - not just for you, but you can also bring a group of people in with you. Once these people are settled, it should at least be better than constantly wandering around hunting, right? Once the gold mine starts operating, it won’t be depleted for several years. This would essentially be a long-term job..."
The premise is that you don’t make trouble.
Sean didn’t voice this condition.
"So, how much are the wages?" Antony Carter asked a key question.
"I don’t know..." Sean shook his head.
"You don’t know?" Antony Carter was somewhat upset, thinking that Sean was trying to fool him.
"I don’t know what your current wage level is, so I can’t be sure. But I can assure you, it will definitely be better than casual laboring work."
Sean spread his hands, "After all, I’m just making the introductions. I can’t say an actual number myself. I don’t want to deceive you."
Antony understood.
Sean putting it this way made him feel that at least he was a straightforward person.
It’s worth considering!
