Chapter 1013: Chapter 550: The Wall Corner Cannot be Dug
Oscar Hudson carried his backpack and held two packages in his hand, looking at the scene before him with a sense of temporal dislocation.
He couldn’t be sure whether this place had just emerged from a war-torn Afghanistan or was a mountain village in some remote area of China?
It was because of the newly built asphalt road, still marked with tire tracks; because of the electric tricycles that zipped by from time to time; because of the photovoltaic solar panels facing the sunshine by the roadside, and also because of the engineering machinery parked by the road, big letters spelling "Xugong" on its side.
However, whether it was the people riding on electric tricycles or those walking along the road with their heads covered in headscarves, all their faces were unfamiliar, their words and pointing fingers clearly indicating that this was a foreign land.
He followed the asphalt road to a village, and then, speaking not too fluent Pashto, he asked an old woman repairing a carpet at the village entrance:
"Granny, I am a merchant from China, and I want to trade with you for some items, is it possible? Or should I say, whom should I find?"
"You’re from China?" The old woman glanced at Oscar Hudson, smiled slightly, and said:
"Alright, open your packages and let me see what you have. If the items are good, I will trade some with you, and I will call others over to trade as well."
Oscar Hudson, who had stumbled into this situation unintentionally, was surprised at how polite the woman was, and immediately put down his backpack, opened the packages he was holding, and started showing the carefully selected daily necessities he brought:
"I have brought many items for men, women, and children. You can look at anything you want..."
Oscar Hudson’s displayed goods quickly attracted quite a few people. However, he noticed that most of those who came were only elderly people and children, with no adults, regardless of gender.
Could it be that all the adults in the village had disappeared because of the war?
While Oscar Hudson was guessing, suddenly, a man with a gun, his face covered and sporting a big beard, walked over, and asked him sternly:
"Where are you from? What are you doing here? Speak up!"
Oscar Hudson was startled, but fortunately, this was within the range of mishaps he had anticipated—the peaceful scene earlier almost seemed like an illusion.
"I come from Xinjiang in China, just here to do a bit of business, to trade some items. I’m a merchant, a trustworthy merchant!"
Oscar Hudson recited the explanation he had prepared in advance.
The man’s expression eased a bit, which brought a measure of relief to Oscar Hudson.
Indeed, most of the tribes here still held goodwill towards the Chinese people—after all, they had witnessed the goodwill of the Chinese people when their 100 tons of pine nuts had been snapped up by Chinese netizens, so it was unlikely they would remain indifferent.
"You cannot do business here." Although the man put away his gun, he still addressed Oscar Hudson:
"No one is allowed to trade here; you need to get permission from the base..."
Oscar Hudson barely understood the word "base," and his face went pale at the thought!
He had assumed that the armed man was referring to the notorious "base"!
But before he had a chance to explain anything, he and his items were loaded onto an electric tricycle, and another man with a gun drove away in a certain direction.
The other side didn’t even assign anyone to watch over him inside the car!
Oscar Hudson was both puzzled and tempted.
If he knocked out the driver and ran away, could he quickly escape the danger?
However, Oscar Hudson ultimately did not dare to act on the idea.
Firstly, he had never done anything like that before, and secondly, he feared a mishap, especially since the other man had a gun, which would likely mean the end for him.
Without the courage to act on his impulse, uncertainty about his future once again crept in.
What would that "base" do to him?
When the tricycle approached what was clearly an American garrison base, Oscar Hudson was dumbfounded.
Since when had "base" appeared so openly before everyone?
Using an American base?
Seeing the Chinese "soldiers" in old-fashioned camouflage uniforms guarding the entrance, Oscar Hudson immediately realized that he might have misunderstood the situation.
However, he was relieved to see "his own people" here.
After handing over to the security personnel and casually accepting a box of snacks that the personnel offered, the big-bearded man happily drove the tricycle back.
"Your name is Oscar Hudson? You came from Xinjiang?"
Sean Knight looked at the fellow countryman in front of him, a few years older than himself, smiling as he asked:
"To run your own business alone in a place like this, you’re quite bold!"
"Just trying to make a living," Oscar Hudson had learned that this person before him was the "boss" of the base and the largest Chinese merchant in the area.
When it came to trading, the tribal elders only recognized Mr. Knight.
He got some information from the security personnel earlier because he was "one of them." The base, including that road and the photovoltaic panels, were all set up by Mr. Knight, hence the tribal elders trusted him a great deal and only did business with him.
"That’s good. How about this, I’ll talk to the elders from each tribe, and I’ll allow you to do business here, but the quality of your items at least can’t be too poor," Sean Knight said with a smile, "I wouldn’t want the reputation we Chinese people have built with such difficulty to be ruined by one or two pieces of shoddy clothing."
"Mr. Knight, rest assured, the items I’ve brought may not be brand-name, but their quality is definitely not a problem," Oscar Hudson was rather confident about this; after all, he hadn’t planned on making a one-off deal, "The clothes are all pure cotton, and I too am afraid of getting shot over quality issues—that would be a big loss."
