Chapter 1007: Chapter 548: Didn’t Expect Such a Harvest!
The items most frequently exchanged were food like flour and vegetable oil, as well as the ethnic garments brought in from Xinjiang.
Due to the large number of people in Xinjiang sharing the same beliefs, there were similar demands regarding clothing.
At first, garments weren’t on the list of supplies to be exchanged, until quite a few people expressed the wish to have some clothes brought in.
After all, the living conditions here were relatively tough; not to say there were no factories making ready-made clothes, but those were few and mainly supplied the cities.
Therefore, most of the clothing worn by the residents in the tribe was rather worn-out, with some being homemade.
It was somewhat similar to China from three or four decades ago.
So, Sean Knight asked Oscar Knight to purchase them on the Chinese side and specifically arranged a plane full of clothing.
There were outfits for men, women, and children of all ages.
Hence, this became everyone’s first choice after food.
It was customary in the tribe for a man to take up to four wives, but once a man had money, or rather, supplies to exchange, and there wasn’t a dire food shortage at home, naturally, he would want his daughter-in-law, or even himself to wear cleaner and more beautiful clothes.
"How many clothes can I get for this piece of jade rough stone?" a middle-aged man with a face weathered by time asked while holding a piece of jade.
Recently, the nearby residents had also come to know that raw stones of Lapis Lazuli, jade, including some gemstones could be exchanged for many things.
Therefore, many people started digging in the ancient, abandoned Jade Mines and river channels.
"Eight... maybe ten pieces," the team member in charge of the exchange hesitated before responding, after hearing the translator and seeing the piece of jade that was obviously green under the flashlight’s glow.
Sean Knight just happened to be passing by and saw the flashlight in the middle-aged man’s hand, which seemed to be one of those exchanged a few days earlier.
And that piece of Green Jade must have weighed at least five or six kilograms, clearly, his side had the better end of the deal.
However, he didn’t point this out, because the middle-aged man was very happy and agreed to the exchange.
For him, a stone that was useless at home was clearly not as valuable as ten pieces of clothing.
At least everyone in the family could now wear new clothes, a demonstration of the head of the household’s capability.
Situations like these were occurring at every exchange point, and Sean Knight had gotten used to it; everyone else seemed to be getting accustomed as well. After all, these items were flown in, and the freight was expensive, right?
What surprised Sean Knight was that the items the locals brought for exchange included not only their signature produce but also many items from this or other bases. Things like unwieldy military notebook computers, brand-new car accessories, and some tools, among others.
A myriad of things was on offer, nothing left unexchanged.
As long as Oscar’s Firm was there, Sean wasn’t worried that no one would want these items when taken back.
Stepping outside the Outer Wall of the Base, Sean saw there were still people coming to make exchanges.
Although there weren’t as many people exchanging as during the first two days, several unsurfaced roads were still dotted with pedestrians and donkey carts heading in this direction.
On the slopes surrounding the Base, photovoltaic solar panels had been installed in large numbers—due to the Base’s high electricity demands, it wasn’t feasible to always rely on Generators, because fuel was too expensive.
Therefore, during a lull in the supply runs, Sean had Charles Young contact a producer of photovoltaic power, securing a batch of panels, and even arranged for a technician to come over for installation and training.
Speaking of which, there was a funny incident. Because of the recent campaigns against scams, the other party was skeptical, fearing they were being scammed into going to Northern Myanmar and being kidnapped, so they were hesitant to send anyone.
In the end, Sean had no choice but to get a Government official to vouch for them before gaining the other side’s trust.
This was originally a not-so-large photovoltaic factory—mainly because competition on the domestic front is intense. The competition and pressures for development are too great within China.
Once they confirmed the purchase was genuinely for Afghanistan, their enthusiasm rose, and they quickly sent over two professional technicians who not only provided thorough training but also handled a series of subsequent issues for free.
Sean thought that the Chinese People’s hardworking spirit, their willingness to endure hardship, and aptitude for research were well-represented now. They weren’t afraid of hardship, just the lack of opportunity.
Given a chance, they were sure to shine brightly.
With the help of the team members, the nearly 2,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels were quickly installed and operational, lighting up the Base at night.
The climate in Afghanistan was somewhat similar to that of the temperate arid continental climate found in South Frontier of Xinjiang, with long hours of sunlight, thus providing excellent conditions for solar energy.
Here, installing photovoltaic power was actually the most practical solution for the tribal residents living far from the city.
At the solar power site, plenty of people had stopped to look. Sean could tell that some of the elders were among them.
After all, who wouldn’t want their tribe to have access to long-lasting electricity!
The Base only let people inside for exchanging supplies; all other non-essential personnel were not permitted. After all, this was like a quasi-military Base, and a certain order had to be maintained.
But outside the Base, many Street vendors had set up snacks stalls.
Seeing Sean come out, each one of them showed a smiling face. Some even voluntarily offered their items, hoping Sean would give them a try.
Sean, laughing, shook his head and declined.
These people, with their small businesses, offering him items, other than those from Elder Hassan’s Tribe who knew him, were likely worried he might send them away.
